PB hotel design editorial

Commissioned by the Boucicaut family — founders of Le Bon Marché, the world's first department store — and completed in 1910 to designs by architects Louis-Charles Boileau and Henri Tauzin, the building at the corner of Boulevard Raspail and Rue de Sèvres has always been a statement about what the Left Bank expects of itself. After a four-year restoration completed in 2018, it reopened as the Mandarin Oriental Lutetia, carrying 184 rooms and suites across seven floors of flamboyant Art Nouveau stonework — the sculpted limestone facade, with its bowed balconies and domed corner pavilion, left exactly as Haussmann's Paris intended such buildings to age. The interiors, directed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, resolve a genuine tension between the building's ornamental past and a contemporary Parisian restraint. Guest rooms employ vertical-ribbed oak panelling as headboard walls, herringbone parquet underfoot, and onyx ceiling medallions that glow amber at dusk — warm without sentimentality. The bar preserves its original vaulted ceiling with faded painted cartouches intact, a dark sculpted bronze counter positioned beneath the plasterwork as a deliberate counterpoint rather than a restoration exercise. Most arresting is the brasserie, where a vast stained-glass ceiling commissioned from artist Yan Pei-Ming floods the room in saturated colour, its figurative exuberance set against ivory carved walls — the building's century-old bones in direct conversation with the present.

"Everyone from the staff is a professional providing service following high standards of hospitality. Our dinner in le Saint Germain 10/10. Daily breakfast in the brasserie was amazing , the service so quick. Concierge contacted us for preferred time of cleaning the room from housekeeping and that make every guest feel appreciated and comfortable. Highlighting the atmosphere and the service , while the taste of cocktails was super , in bar Josephine . Well done to Lou from front office who welcomed us with warmth . Overall an excellent experience!!"

"My partner and I spent 4 nights for our anniversary. We arrived early to the hotel and were shocked when the room was ready for check in. Charlotte at the desk was so lovely! She gave us a tour of the hotel and then brought us to our room. My partner arranged for breakfast to be waiting for us in our room and the hotel staff added rose petals, flowers and a beautiful anniversary cake. The spa and fitness center are stunning! But, what sets this hotel apart is the level of personal service. From getting us impossible dinner reservations to ensuring our room was always tidy (they even folded our clothes!) - this was truly a 5 star experience!"

".Lutetia is firmly in that category of a special hotel. It has something most luxury hotels can’t manufacture: genuine character. The renovation struck exactly the right balance — all the soul of a Parisian institution, but with modern amenities and high-tech touches that make it feel alive rather than preserved. The staff are what elevate it above the competition. Warm, attentive, and gracious without ever feeling scripted — the service here operates at a level that’s increasingly rare. Brasserie Lutetia is a destination in its own right, and the fact that locals fill the room alongside hotel guests tells you everything. This is not a tourist hotel but it’s a place that belongs to the neighborhood, and the neighborhood knows it. The gym is also genuinely impressive, one of the best I’ve encountered at any hotel in Paris."
