PB hotel design editorial

At 30-32 Rue du Sentier, behind a carved limestone facade whose lion-head keystones and Rococo cartouche belong firmly to eighteenth-century Paris, the building that now houses The Hoxton Paris spent much of its modern life as offices — a fate common to the grandest hôtels particuliers in what was once the city's newspaper district. When Soho House's sister brand took it over and opened here in 2017, the design team worked with Humbert & Poyet to thread 172 rooms through a structure whose architectural bones demanded to be kept legible rather than erased. The rooms settle that tension with some confidence: herringbone parquet floors, panelled wainscoting painted grey, and corniced ceilings in tall proportions give each space its Haussmann-era structure, while dusty-blue feature walls, leather-strapped headboards, grid-check cotton bedding, and Lampe Gras-style articulated reading sconces introduce a register that is more Marais apartment than palace hotel. The public spaces follow a similar logic — the restaurant Rivié anchors itself around a central island of dark leather banquettes beneath a steel-framed rooflight, globe pendants suspended above an open kitchen, one dining room animated by a floor-to-ceiling living plant wall that pulls filtered green light into the interior courtyard. The effect overall is closer to a well-edited Parisian flat than to any conventional hotel lobby, which remains the Hoxton formula, deployed here with unusual elegance.

"Hox Paris was a gorgeous property in a lovely walkable neighborhood. It was not our first time in Paris, but the stay made it special. Cozy room is well-appointed. Hotel is safe and secure. Shower/bathroom is spacious and water pressure and temperature perfect. Bed very comfortable & not mushy. The staff are courteous and helpful. They know some of the best restaurants, rooftops, shopping and sites to recommend. The coffee bar staff in the mornings make gorgeous caffeine drinks of all types, and they are so KIND. Special shout out to Leslie and Sene at the counter for helping me; I became ill at the last part of the trip and they were so sympathetic. PS if you're from the US and covet air-conditioning bring your own travel fan. These old buildings aren't typically outfitted with central air, although this location is, I believe. Be prepared."

"The bed was very comfortable with great bedding and pillows. Unfortunately the twin room is booked for my children was not made up on arrival despite having email confirmation. In addition, the rooms can not be made into a twin, they simply add in Z bed, this I think should have been made clear when I asked prior to my booking. The restaurant staff were good and attentive, however, we were not blown away by the quay the food at the price point. In addition, the music was intrusive, especially given the number and demographic of the diners. The barman was inconsistent. He was friendly the first night and then in a foul mood on the two addition occasions we sat at the bar - where there are bar stool (albeit quite unsteady ones!), which suggested we could sit at the bar, however he made us feel less than welcome! One final thing…..as there is no staff uniform, it was quite hard to know who was staff and who was not when st in the common areas. We wanted to order refreshments whilst sat in one of the common areas, however the staff who were working kept ignoring us, and because there was not indication of them being staff (just cool look folk), we didn’t think to ask them."

"The room we stayed in was more basic than I would expect from even a budget hotel. There was nowhere to put a case when unpacking (had to put on the bed which isn’t very hygienic and convenient). We had no milk, had to ask three times over two days, and eventually got some. However when we checked out we had been charged room service for the milk (which they took off after we questioned it). The bathroom gets soaking wet when having a shower. They provide a shower / math mat which is drenched by the end of the shower so is pointless and makes getting ready uncomfortable. The room smelt like paint throughout. The bedding was not what I would expect and the pillows were pretty flat. Breakfast is an odd affair, being made to sit at small coffee tables on low chairs if not having the buffet. Eventually we managed to convince them to move us to an actual dining table and chairs, but were told ‘only for today, not for tomorrow’. Not what I expect as a paying guest. Overall, for the price, it fell at the very basics of what I’d expect from any hotel. Generally staff in the bar were nice. Surroundings were nice. Drinks were well made. Just disappointing overall. Will go back to soho house next time."

"I love this charming hotel. The bed was most comfortable. On one of my mornings, I enjoyed great croissants and a cappuccino. Can't wait to return with my significant other!"
