PB hotel design editorial

A 1911 apartment block on Rue de Buci, in the thick of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, sits within one of the most painted, argued-over, and mythologized neighborhoods in Paris. That Villa-des-Prés chose to open here in 2023 as a 34-room boutique hotel — in a post-Haussmann building whose carved limestone facade, layered balconies, and wrought-iron railings read as a distillation of Left Bank domestic architecture — set the central problem for interior designer Bruno Borrione: how to work inside a building this particular without either erasing it or being swallowed by it. His answer was to keep the bones intact, including the original spiral staircase now lined with stained-glass windows, and reimagine the interior as a private house assembled by someone with genuine aesthetic conviction. The rooms run deep into burgundy and cognac — lacquered chests in oxblood, leather headboards, brass-fitted wall sconces with fabric shades — with a large-format abstract canvas above each bed drawn from a curated collection of over fifty commissioned works selected by gallerist Amélie du Chalard. Embroidered line-drawing cushions reference Matisse's cut-out period without announcing the debt. The bar pulls the same warm palette downward into polished wood paneling, ochre velvet curtains, and travertine floors, while the basement spa presents an entirely different mood: white fluted tile, luminous coffered ceilings above an indoor lap pool, and a cool mineral quiet that feels deliberately removed from the richness above.

"While the hotel is aesthetically pleasing, it’s lacking in a lot of areas. The Junior Suite we booked was very small. The smallest of any hotel room I’ve ever had in Paris. The layout didn’t make a ton of sense because the toilet was tucked away on the opposite side of the room away from the wash area making hand washing difficult. There’s only enough space to comfortably have one suitcase accessible. We had a rollaway bed for our daughter in the room. The bed was raised high off the ground, so I was able to store the suitcase underneath for easy accessibility. However, day 2 upon return to the room (3pm) my suitcase was moved without my consent, the bed was swapped to a bed that was nearly on the floor. I called down to ask what had happened and why things in my room were touched without asking.(the suitcase was moved to near the main exit of the room offering 4-5inches to move past it to get in or out. Not a reusable or fire safe option) No one had a response. I was told they would come fix it. We left again. Came back nothing was swapped. (11pm) I called again and they sent up someone to look. He had no response and blamed house keeping. I walked down and asked for the manager. I let a man, who was not the manager and was very annoyed at my request to fix what I had asked already twice. He came up to my room with an attitude. He called the other guy in and they were speaking about the cot. Then he said there’s nothing we can do. We don’t know what happened, we don’t understand what you’re asking and that he was not even an employee of the hotel?!? He was just there for a night because no one could work. The other employee finally offered up the information that the bed we had belonged to another hotel, and he was told to move it earlier in the day. ( this was after multiple attempts in asking why the stuff was moved and he nor anyone knew). The only solution they could offer me was to wait until morning, and the manager would reach out to me to make it right. No surprise— was never addressed. I would have left the hotel if we were not traveling with a group. Long story short— stay somewhere else. Lack of accountability and privacy invasion is enough to warrant finding a better hotel at a similar price point. I can say the best employee there was the door man. He was always knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful."

"The hotel is in a great location and our room was small but comfortable. The front desk staff, Francesco in particular, were unfriendly and unhelpful."

"Spent a week with my daughter at this lovely hotel and had the most wonderful experience. The people were amazing from front desk, doormen, concierge, food service, etc.. We loved them all and they made us feel like family coming home each evening. The rooms were beautiful, spacious and had everything you could need. Can't wait to plan our next trip back."

"Villa des Pres is a wonderful, boutique 5 star hotel in the beating heart of Saint Germain on Rue de Buci. We stayed 6 nights in room 601, a deluxe double king room. The room had everything you would want and was super quiet. The staff were all excellent. We will be back agin."
