Paul Ricard built his private island from 1950 onward as a personal vision of the Mediterranean — a pastis entrepreneur's fantasy of stone arcades, Moorish arches, and terracotta roofing stepped up from the waterfront of Bandol. That idiosyncratic inheritance is what Hardel Le Bihan Architectes spent five years working through, and what gives Zannier Île de Bendor its particular character: not a clean-slate resort but a place that carries its mid-century origins openly, in the rough-cut limestone facades, the Venetian-inflected loggia running along the waterfront, and the iron balustrades curving above an infinity pool that faces open sea. The 93-key property is organized across three distinct zones — Delos, Soukana, and Madrague — spread over seven hectares of private island, each with its own architectural mood but held together by the warm sand palette of the original structures. Zannier Design Studio's interiors move between two registers that reflect the island's split personality. In the restaurant, ochre-plastered walls and deep terracotta open through arched thresholds hung with woven rattan pendants in conical and globe forms, raw oak tables and cord-woven chairs kept deliberately unpolished. The guest rooms shift toward something quieter: in some, pale blue-grey plaster and linen curtains frame arched windows onto the bay, with Art Deco-adjacent headboards in dark walnut and ribbed lounge chairs in cream bouclé; in others, warm blush plaster and cane headboards sit above wide-plank floors, antique wooden benches placed at the foot of the bed like objects found rather than specified.
