PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, in the quiet hamlet of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce above Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, a cluster of traditional Savoyard farm buildings has been transformed into L'Armancette Hotel Chalets & Spa — a five-star property that works harder than most to keep faith with its agricultural origins. The exterior presents the full vernacular vocabulary: weathered timber framing, slate-pitched roofs, carved balcony railings, and window boxes erupting with geraniums in summer, the massing low enough against the surrounding pine forests to feel like something grown rather than built. Inside, the design moves between two registers depending on which room you enter. The more recently renovated spaces layer reclaimed alpine timber with contemporary upholstered furniture — rounded bouclé armchairs, fur throws, textured leather headboards with integrated lighting — finding a balance between mountain warmth and understated luxury that avoids the overstuffed chalet cliché. Other rooms keep a darker, more traditional character, with exposed beam ceilings, black marble fireplaces, and leather club chairs pulled close to the hearth. The restaurant has shed any rusticity entirely, its open kitchen framed by warm oak millwork and dressed with linen-upholstered dining chairs in a register closer to a contemporary Parisian bistro than a ski lodge. The spa pool pavilion, its heavy timber king-post trusses hung with lantern pendants, opens entirely onto the snow through a wall of glass — the most architecturally assured moment in the building.

"Despite pleasant service this was a disappointing stay. The hotel is beautifully designed but suffers the classic problem of the style preferring form over function and so offered less comfort than you might expect as this price. For example there is only a small lounge with high hard chairs and no bar. The bistro restaurant is in a building over the road and while the food was excellent it has to be eaten on hard wooden chairs at a small wooden table. The bedroom is small and packed in with very little room for storage, and a ridiculous Japanese toilet with a remote control that requires a degree in computer science to operate. The bathroom has a silly shallow bowl with no plug so you can’t dip your hands or face into the water and there is no shelf space , or space around the bowl for your toiletries. And why does the hotel put useless items like shoe horns and cotton buds in the room when some milk for tea and coffee would have been more helpful, The below ground garage works well and the spa is fine ( except there are too few chairs to relax in for the number of people using it, again due to lack of space). Overall everything too squeezed in and without any aura of luxury, Also, be aware the village is tiny and with nothing to do outside the hotel, We had booked in for three nights but left after one ."

"My husband and I chose this hotel based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews. After our stay here, I can see why! The hotel is beautiful and very comfortable. The location is perfect for skiing — only a short walk to the gondola that allows down-loading as well for the return trip. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. They handled airport and train transfers as well as arranged a taxi for our dinner in megeve. The spa area has several hot tubs, a heated pool, sauna and steam room. My husband had 2 massages during our stay and I had a massage and a facial. Both were amazing! I pre booked spa treatments before arriving and they were able to accommodate us and get a second masseuse when I realized the original timing would conflict with our dinner plans. We dined at both restaurants and the cafe and enjoyed all 3. We were late to breakfast one morning and the staff kindly accommodated us and brought us coffee and food in the lounge. Overall we had a very relaxing and fun stay and are already trying to figure out when we can return :)."
