PB hotel design editorial

Within the salt-white limestone walls that Vauban's military engineers raised around Saint-Martin-de-Ré in the seventeenth century, a cluster of traditional Charentais maisons has been drawn together as Le Clos Saint Martin Hotel & Spa — one of the Île de Ré's most considered small retreats. The property's whitewashed facades, grey-shuttered French windows, and terracotta-tiled roofs sit in careful dialogue with the island's vernacular architecture, while a landscaped courtyard with a limestone-edged pool and yucca plantings pushes the mood somewhere closer to a private Provençal demeure than a conventional hotel. Inside, the interiors hold to a tightly controlled palette of chalk white, warm linen, and pale oak — wide-plank floors running beneath slipcovered sofas, upholstered panel headboards in greyed wood, and mirrored side chests that catch the Atlantic light filtering through voile-draped casement windows. The spa pavilion takes a more contemporary register: dark-stained timber beams cross a ceiling of full-height steel-framed glazing, the garden pressed close on every side, day beds in bleached oak arranged beneath a cluster pendant of blown-glass globes. The terrace restaurant extends the same restrained sensibility outward onto hardwood decking, woven rattan armchairs gathered around grey-top tables beneath a retractable canopy. Across its thirty or so rooms, the property holds its tone with the kind of quiet consistency that takes more discipline than decoration.
