PB hotel design editorial

A 1950s Modernist building pressed against the red porphyry coastline between Saint-Raphaël and Agay, where the Estérel massif drops into the Mediterranean, gave the Beaumier group an extraordinary starting point when they transformed it into Les Roches Rouges in 2019. The whitewashed rectilinear volumes — flat roofs, deep terraces, horizontal brise-soleil rhythms — carry the feeling of postwar Côte d'Azur rationalism, the kind of architecture that understood the Mediterranean light as a building material in itself. Paris-based studio Caon & Caon handled the interior renovation, working with a palette that draws warmth from the landscape rather than imposing on it: natural linen curtains, sisal rugs, solid-wood trestle tables, and the vintage Butterfly chairs in tan leather that appear on almost every terrace. The 38 rooms divide between cliff-facing and sea-facing orientations, the best suites opening directly over the water through white-railed balconies with the Île d'Or visible on the horizon. Inside, bathrooms tiled in warm ochre-amber ceramic play against the otherwise all-white shell, while pendant lights — a layered rattan dome in one room, a Verner Panton Moon lamp in another — introduce distinct personalities without fragmenting the overall register. The restaurant continues this approach through a coffered ceiling lined in natural woven matting, terracotta flagstone floors, and banquette seating in burlap with fine red piping. Every material choice defers to the geology outside: the red rock that names the place sets the entire tonal conversation.

"We absolutely loved our stay at Hotel Les Roches Rouges in Saint-Raphaël. The location is stunning, with beautiful views of the sea and the surrounding mountains — everything you could wish for on a relaxing holiday. The hotel has two swimming pools: a regular pool and a gorgeous saltwater pool overlooking the Mediterranean. There is also direct access to the sea via a walkway, steps and a private jetty. One of our favourite touches is that you can borrow a SUP or kayak free of charge and head out to explore the coastline. The breakfast and food are delicious, and everyone working at the hotel is incredibly kind and welcoming. The rooms are beautiful, very clean and comfortable. There is also a well-equipped gym with several machines, dumbbells and benches, and the hotel organises activities such as morning yoga and Pilates. The only thing we feel could be improved is breakfast. It is served from 8:00 to 10:00 am (early for holidays), and at exactly 10:00 everything is cleared away very quickly. Even if you are already having breakfast and would like to grab one last piece of bread, the buffet is immediately removed. For a hotel with such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, this feels unnecessarily strict and not quite as guest-friendly as the rest of the experience. A little more flexibility here would make a big difference. Apart from that, we absolutely love this place. We stayed for a few days last year and enjoyed it so much that we came back again this year — which probably says it all. A wonderful hotel in an exceptional location, and a place we would happily return to again."
