PB hotel design editorial

Strung across the lagoon of French Polynesia's most mythologised island, the overwater bungalow format that Conrad Bora Bora Nui perfected across its 114 villas represents the archetype against which almost every Pacific resort is now measured. Spread across a private peninsula on the calmer western shore, the property deploys thatched pandanus rooflines and dark-stained timber structures across both the lagoon and the beachfront, the aerial view revealing a branching geometry of boardwalks that connects the individual pavilions without ever suggesting a corridor. Inside, two distinct interior languages operate in parallel. The premium overwater villas lean into a contemporary Pacific register — deeply grained hardwood panelling wrapping walls and pitched ceilings, dark-framed platform beds with live-edge side tables, sliding glass walls erasing the boundary between the room and private deck. The lagoon-facing standard bungalows take a softer approach: canopied four-poster beds dressed in white linen, exposed roof trusses in a warm honey timber, driftwood lamps beside whitewashed side tables that carry more of a resort-casual sensibility. The main restaurant, visible in the images, expresses the full ambition of the public architecture — a soaring double-height space framed by deep mahogany post-and-beam structure, the trusses left entirely exposed, floor-to-ceiling glazed panels folding back to dissolve the dining room into the lagoon at sunset. Against the turquoise of Bora Bora's reef-sheltered water, the geometry holds its own.

"I have nothing but amazing things to say about Conrad Bora Bora Nui. My husband and I celebrated our 21st anniversary and could not recommend this resort enough for such a milestone. We stayed at the King Overwater Pool Villa for five nights and it was very hard to leave the room because of its wonderful amenities, amazing view of both Mt Otemanu and the Pacific Ocean. For us, a Bora Bora experience would not be complete without the overwater villa. It was very private and elegantly designed. Ours had updated digital controls, making the months of construction upgrade worthwhile. The personalized welcome note with champagne and chocolates made us feel special. Conrad is strategically located on a separate island from the Bora Bora mainland, so our private infinity pool was situated in a turquoise atoll lagoon and actually facing the Pacific ocean, unlike other properties. We swam with colorful fish, playfully nibbling at corals, just by the villa stilts. During our stay, a group of sting rays and black-tipped friendly sharks wandered into the property to our delight. You definitely don’t see this from where we are from! We woke up early every day to catch the breathtaking sunrise and walk hand-in-hand by the shore, as it had direct access to the ocean. We enjoyed both the sunrise and sunset at viewpoints within the property, which were accessible using complimentary bicycles. During the day, we took a dip in our private infinity pool, relaxed and just laid down on the chaise lounge. On some days, we also went snorkeling, swimming in the huge resort infinity pool and took naps on the beach chairs with the sound of waves hugging us to dreamland. In the summer, we highly recommend going to Vaitape in the morning while it’s not too hot yet. Since we stayed in July, we availed of the complimentary boat ride to Vaitape and rented out a Vespa there to tour the whole island of Bora Bora along the beautiful emerald coast. We definitely made core memories there, as we soaked in the Polynesian culture for a few hours. One of the unique events in French Polynesia during our stay was the Heiva. We booked the tickets through the resort but skipped the dinner since we wanted authentic Vaitape food to complete the experience. Kristoff accompanied us and showed us around. We were brought back home to our villa with a special private Conrad catamaran. We felt like VIPs! Our trip was especially made memorable by all the employees and their impeccable hospitality. We were greeted and toured around the property by Kristoff. If there was anything we needed, we looked for Kristoff and he delivered. The food was divine and very tropical fresh! On our first night, we dined at Banyan Chinese Restaurant. We then had dinner every night at the Tamure Beach Grill, which served French cuisine since their restaurant was under renovation. Nelly, our usual server, was the best! She recommended entrees for us and told us more about Bora Bora culture such that we booked the Polynesian Dinner Night through her. We highly recommend this dinner event, only on Tuesdays and Fridays, as they showcase a mini Heiva performance. It’s like watching multiples of Shakira doing the hip moves against a cultural backdrop with live music, narration, singing and unlimited genuine Polynesian food. One of the servers, Sylvane, urged us to dance with the group and we enjoyed it so much. She even taught us how to sway our hips like how a Polynesian does it! Hina Spa at Conrad Bora Bora was probably one of the best spa locations we’ve been to! It was perched on top of a hill with a sweeping view of the overwater villas, Mt Otemanu, the sunrise, the ocean and the beautiful flora around the property. The spa would not be complete without the staff, especially Wayan and Deli. Wayan toured us around and showed us the private couple massage areas. He also went above and beyond before and after our massage to give us the best relaxation experience there was. Their private sauna and relaxation room were clean with robes and disposable slippers available in the locker room. My husband and I just sat there, enjoying the views, before our massage. Upon check-out, Sophie assisted us in their private library. She was very organized and explained the checkout process very well. She accompanied us to the private boat dock to assist with our luggages. It was hard to see her wave her hands out as we bid farewell to paradise. We sailed away through the sunset so that made it such a dramatic beautiful exit to cap our trip. Conrad Bora Bora Nui was truly an unforgettable experience. The resort’s unique view of Mt Otemanu, landscape of luscious tree hills, and strategic location in the atoll and Pacific Ocean provided its warm hospitality and private luxury. We left feeling relaxed, closer to nature, grateful and already dreaming of our return. We highly recommend Conrad Bora Bora and we know that we will definitely be back!"

"Bora Bora is an amazingly gorgeous place to visit. Booking with Costco Travel did not disappoint. Costco knows travel! Conrad Nui made our over the water bungalow experience a memorable one. While Conrad Nui is located on one of the longest stretches of private white sand beaches, the resort is surrounded by the most beautiful shades of crystal clear blue water imaginable. Some of the on-site activities available are kayaking, biking, snorkeling, and paddle boarding. There’s a fully equipped spa that is perched on a hilltop embraced by unreal scenery. One can capture an amazing sunrise from the nearby platform. Of course, the friendly, attentive staff will enhance your experience by personalizing preferences, focusing attention to detail, and assisting with anything you need to make your stay worthwhile. The concierge was a great resource for exploring other island activities, locating the island doctor, and making sure we were well taken care of during our entire stay. It is worth mentioning the resort restaurants had incredible mouthwatering food options with magnificent service. Needless to say, we were very impressed with all aspects of Conrad Nui and taken aback by Bora Bora’s beauty. We will definitely revisit Conrad Bora Bora Nui. Ia Orana!"

"The staff throughout the property are incredibly warm, attentive, and accommodating. A special shout-out to our concierge, Hanson, who went above and beyond to create real “wow” moments for our kids and the whole family — the kind of thoughtful touches that turn a good vacation into a truly memorable one. The breakfast restaurant team deserves special mention as well. They remembered our names and preferences from day one, and every single morning our table was ready and waiting, with wonderful, attentive service throughout our stay. Our kids had the time of their lives at this resort. We had so much fun as a family that we booked our return trip for next year before we even checked out! Thank you to the entire Conrad Bora Bora team for such incredible hospitality and for helping us create wonderful memories as a family. We can’t recommend this property enough, and we can’t wait to be back."

"We stayed at Conrad Bora Bora Nui in May 2026 to celebrate our honeymoon and my 50th birthday. Bora Bora had been a dream destination of ours for years, and Conrad felt like the natural choice — we have stayed at many Conrad properties around the world and have always had very positive experiences with the brand. On arrival at the airport, we were welcomed by the Westin team, who kindly greeted us with flower leis. Although our flight details had been provided in advance, no Conrad representative was present. As we arrived early, we had to wait for our room to become available. That was completely fine and something we know from other Conrad and Waldorf Astoria properties. We were surprised, however, to be charged for breakfast on the day of arrival, since our breakfast entitlement officially only started the following day. While technically correct, this was something we had never encountered at any other Conrad or Waldorf Astoria. The breakfast itself, it should be said, was excellent. The first impression of our villa from the outside was very positive — a wonderful beachfront setting we were genuinely looking forward to. On closer inspection, though, the villa was clearly showing its age. Several pieces of furniture and door frames were damaged, and some fixtures could have been cleaner. The biggest issue was the terrace door, which could not be locked: instead of a working lock there was only a temporary fix using a screw that was already rusting. For a resort of this category, that was not acceptable. On top of this, construction work was taking place directly in front of our terrace, with constant noise that made it impossible to relax outside. After our first complaint, we were offered another villa, this time with a pool — a gesture we appreciated. Unfortunately, similar problems remained: the terrace door again could not be properly locked, the toilet seat was loose, the shower door handle was not secure, and, due to the proximity to what appeared to be a drainage area, there was occasionally an unpleasant smell. After several conversations, a manager came to inspect and confirmed that the terrace door locks were indeed defective. The construction, which we had been told would last only a day, continued throughout our entire week. The eventual solution was very good: we were moved to a newly renovated overwater bungalow for the rest of our stay. We would have been perfectly happy in either villa had it been maintained to the standard this type of resort promises. As it turned out, the bungalow was an additional highlight — beautifully renovated, with the spectacular views and breathtaking sunsets that make Bora Bora so special. There, we were finally able to enjoy the resort the way we had hoped to for such a special occasion. At this point the review could have ended. Unfortunately, the issues were not limited to the accommodation. This is where our real disappointment lies. While a few team members were genuinely excellent, the majority of our day-to-day service interactions simply did not reach the standard expected from a 5-star resort at this level. This was not the odd unlucky moment — it was a recurring pattern throughout the week. At breakfast, egg dishes were repeatedly delivered differently from how they were ordered. In the French restaurant, drinks that were ordered never arrived but still appeared on the bill, and freshly squeezed orange juice was only available at an additional charge. Individually minor, but together they left the consistent impression of operations that were not running as they should. One early highlight was the bar. Heymana was an outstanding bartender who made our evenings truly special. After a change behind the bar, the same cocktails — despite identical orders — were prepared differently and no longer reached that level. This was no reflection on the service team, quite the opposite: the bar team remained exceptional throughout and, for us, delivered the best service in the entire resort. The recognition of our honeymoon was another point. There is of course no entitlement to special treatment. Still, a year earlier at Conrad Bangkok we had merely mentioned that we planned to have a wedding dress made there; it was misunderstood, and the team surprised us with balloons and a cake. So it was a little surprising that our actual honeymoon here initially received very little acknowledgement. After we mentioned it, we received a small dessert in the Chinese restaurant and a bowl of fruit at breakfast, gestures we genuinely appreciated. The Chinese restaurant itself was one of the absolute highlights of our stay — truly outstanding. Excellent variety, wonderful flavors, and a complete dining experience: exactly what we would expect from a resort of this category. None of these points would have been decisive on its own. It was the combination of many small things that made the overall experience fall short of what we had hoped for. We strongly believe that the quality of a hotel is shaped by its management, and during our stay we had the impression that many of these issues were known but not addressed with the necessary consistency. Despite our request, no member of senior management took the time to meet with us. The overall impression was of a resort lacking consistent quality management during this period. That this is not a fundamental issue with the Conrad brand is clear from our experience at Conrad Koh Samui, which we booked for the third time immediately after returning home. There, true hospitality means not only an exceptional location but also attention to detail, reliable operations, and a management team that sets and lives these standards. At Conrad Bora Bora Nui we met many dedicated and warm team members, and we do not see the issues as caused by individual employees, but by missing processes and a lack of consistent leadership. What will remain with us are the memories of a beautiful overwater bungalow, the incredible scenery of Bora Bora, the outstanding Chinese restaurant, and an exceptional bartender named Heymana and his team. What will not remain, unfortunately, is the feeling of having experienced the unforgettable honeymoon we had hoped for from such a special place — and from a brand like Conrad. Would we return? Honestly, no — and not primarily because of the maintenance issues, which can be fixed. It is the service that would keep us away: a few individuals were truly excellent, but too much of it was inconsistent for a resort of this category and price. In a location this extraordinary, that is exactly what strong, consistent hospitality should get right."

"We had the opportunity to take a family trip for 6 nights to the Conrad Bora Bora and it didn’t disappoint. The property is beautiful with a mixture of over water and land based bungalows. The tropical hills above the resort where the Hina spa sat was a perfect place to watch the sunrise. What stood out about this resort compared to some of the others in the Lagoon was the contrasting landscape of mountain and sea as well as areas where there was deep water (up to 15’) off of the patio, which my kids loved for jumping into. The deep clear blue water was magical. The people made the difference, each so kind and helpful throughout the trip. Too many to name, but Upa, Rua, Rama, Joana, and our concierge host, Adrijan were among many that stood out. As with any of the lagoon resorts, you can never get used to the food and beverage expenses so be prepared for that. Outside of that, this is a wonderful resort and highly recommended."
