PB hotel design editorial

Perched on Motu Tautau, a private islet adrift in Taha'a's jade-and-turquoise lagoon with Bora Bora's volcanic silhouette visible on the horizon, Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts was built in 2002 around a principle that most overwater resorts only gesture toward: that Polynesian craft traditions deserve to be taken seriously as architecture. The 59 suites and villas are structured around steeply pitched thatched roofs, woven pandanus panels, and deeply carved timber screens bearing traditional tiki motifs — materials assembled with a specificity that goes well beyond decorative intent. From the air, the overwater bungalows extend from the motu's fringes on timber piles in long, curving jetties, their dark thatch massing reading as an extension of the palm canopy rather than an imposition on it. Inside, the interiors move between two moods. The overwater bungalows feature low-pitched woven ceilings, warm hardwood floors, rattan seating, and arched openings framing unbroken lagoon views, the whole effect soft and enveloping. The beachside villas are more voluminous, with soaring thatched ceilings, carved wooden room dividers in bold Marquesan patterns, and wide-plank timber floors opening directly onto private decks. The main restaurant pavilion draws from the same material palette — heavy mahogany columns, a conical thatched roof, stone-flagged floors — with a sculptural outrigger canoe at its center serving as a formal axis for the dining room. The first Relais & Châteaux property in the Islands of Tahiti, and a 2025 Michelin Key recipient, it has earned both recognitions through commitment to place rather than formula.
