PB hotel design editorial

A slender glass tower twisting above the Mtkvari River, its faceted curtain wall catching the light differently at every hour, announces itself as one of the more architecturally assertive buildings in the Georgian capital. The Biltmore Hotel Tbilisi, which opened in 2016 across 25 floors and around 200 rooms, was designed to position Tbilisi alongside Baku and Yerevan as a destination for international business and leisure travel — the tower's angular silhouette deliberately legible from the ancient skyline of Narikala and the Metekhi Church visible in the middle distance. The interior design navigates a split personality with reasonable confidence. Lower floors are given over to a grand dining room with a coffered and painted rotunda ceiling, cream marble columns with gilded acanthus capitals, and inlaid stone flooring arranged in concentric geometric bands — a neoclassical register closer to a Caucasian interpretation of Beaux-Arts than anything contemporary. Upper floors shift register entirely: guest rooms employ tufted headboards, geometric-patterned carpets in grey and blush, and crystal drum chandeliers set within amber-lit coved ceilings, while the sky-level restaurant trades the ornamental vocabulary altogether for slanting floor-to-ceiling glazing, dark marble flooring inlaid with brass hexagons, and panoramic views that sweep from the Kura bend to the Tbilisi hills — the city spread below in a way that justifies every floor gained on the way up.

The Biltmore Hotel Tbilisi Reviews

"We were really looking forward to staying at this landmark hotel which soars over Tbilisi. The entrance is decorative with a cafe tucked away in the corner of the lobby area. This also had a very small selection of wine and spirits. We had a junior suite, which had plenty of space but was extremely badly organised. The desk area had been put under the tv but there were no electrical sockets nearby. These were on a completely different wall far away near a coffee machine. The settee was not near them either so you couldn’t even sit on that with a laptop. Like wise using a hairdryer was a challenge and the lead only just reached to near a mirror. The walls were bare of any artwork which made the suite very unwelcoming. Bed was OK but pillows were awful. Flat and uncomfortable. Although tea and coffee were provided there was no milk. In the bathroom amenities were not always refreshed and there was no body lotion provided which is unusual for this category of hotel. We had a meal in the restaurant on the 32nd floor with views over the city. It was quite difficult to get staff’s attention and it wasn’t busy. Food was very mediocre. We wanted to go to the bar on the floor below but we were told it was closed and this seems to have been the case for sometime. The breakfast restaurant was also closed in the evening, so the only bar in operation was a covered outside area where smoking was permitted or in the lobby where there was little choice. The gym was a reasonable size. Staff at breakfast were good."

"Stayed at The Biltmore Hotel Tbilisi expecting a true five-star experience, but it fell short. Room had basic issues: most sockets and USB ports didn’t work, the “Do Not Disturb” panel was non-functional, and housekeeping still entered the room. We were even disturbed Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., just hours after late check-in, with staff attempting to enter the room. No usable fridge unless you pay a deposit to UNLOCK the minibar which is not a FRIDGE!!!! For ~$250 per night, these are serious shortcomings. Disappointing overall."

"The hotel is very beautiful, comfortable, and luxurious, but the management is terrible. Upon check-in, we were told we couldn't enter our room before 3 pm. We gave them a few pieces of clothing to be washed the night before, and they said they would be ready in the morning. When I called in the morning, they said I had to go down to reception to pay first, then they would deliver the clothes. Later, they apologized, saying they had forgotten to wash them. My wife couldn't wear her favorite outfit because of this, which is ridiculous. They later said they would make up for their mistake and provide a free service, but they did nothing."
