PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses in European hospitality carry the weight of Pariser Platz 3, where the Hotel Adlon Kempinski has stood — in one form or another — since Lorenz Adlon opened the original building in 1907, directly beside the Brandenburg Gate at the insistence of Kaiser Wilhelm II. That structure was destroyed by fire in 1945; what stands today is a meticulous reconstruction completed in 1997, designed by the architectural practice Patzschke, Klotz & Partner to honor the Wilhelmine classicism of the original. The sandstone facade, with its mansard copper roof now weathered to verdigris, presents the full weight of the Beaux-Arts tradition along Unter den Linden, German and European flags flying from the roofline as if the intervening half-century of division never happened. Inside, across 307 rooms and suites spread over six floors, the interiors hold to a warm palette of champagne, tobacco, and dark-stained mahogany — damask-upholstered armchairs, striped fabric headboards, four-poster beds with tufted canopies sitting against paneled joinery. The bar, visible in the images, channels a 1930s private members' club atmosphere through teal velvet club chairs with brass nailhead trim, dark parquet floors, and forest-green lacquered walls hung with vintage black-and-white portraiture. Below, the spa pool is lined in cream travertine with Greek-key mosaic detailing, Ionic columns framing the lounger deck beyond — a Wilhelmine thermal fantasy delivered with complete conviction.

"Location by Brandenburger Tor and close to Deutschen Bundestag. You can easily access public transportation. We stayed in a junior suite on the 6th floor with a a view towards the Bundestag and overlooking flower beds and the hotel facade. We had a person sleeping on the sofa bed, unusually comfortable. The service was good but didn’t exceed our expectations. In the Lobby bar the staff was nice but not tentative but once you got their attention they where helpful. Our perception was the same regarding breakfast service. The breakfast buffet has a wide selection of food and if you enjoy champagne and caviar this might be the place for you. We did use the gym which has good equipment but if you are a true gym person you might not find it adequate. The pool area is nice but don’t expect a large pool. It’s big enough to do shorter laps. The less positive experience was with hotell security who asked for proof that we stayed at the hotel by asking us to show him our hotel key whilst others just passed by without any questions asked. Except for this incident our stay has been good and we chose to stay at the hotel for a special occasion as it is considered the oldest and one of the best hotels in Berlin."

"Horrible experience at checking in. We had specifically requested for an early check in at the time of our reservation. Subsequently a day before our check in we made a request for early check in. We landed up at the hotel at 1:30 pm and were told that the room will be ready in half an hour’s time. After waiting for 1.5 hours we went to the receptionist to ask if our room was ready. Shamelessly the receptionist told us to BACKOFF from the reception desk and continue with our endless wait. Finally after great persuasion we were given our room at 3:15 pm."

"This hotel exceeded every expectation and made our stay in Berlin truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by how immaculate and beautifully maintained everything was. The rooms and common areas were spotless, and the level of cleanliness was exceptional. The location simply couldn't be better. Situated directly across from the Brandenburg Gate, it was the perfect base for exploring the city. We were able to walk throughout the historic center of East Berlin, and with both bus and metro stations just steps away, getting anywhere in the city was effortless. The breakfast was one of the most extraordinary hotel breakfasts we've ever experienced. The buffet offered an incredible selection of fresh, high-quality dishes, complemented by an excellent à la carte menu. Enjoying breakfast each morning while looking out at the iconic Brandenburg Gate was an unforgettable experience. The hotel's spa was another highlight—beautifully designed, impeccably clean, peaceful, and the perfect place to relax after a day of sightseeing. This hotel combines an unbeatable location, outstanding service, exceptional dining, and luxurious amenities. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Berlin and would gladly stay here again."

"Second visit to this classic Berlin hotel. Furst timers should note that this is a massive hotel. In a sweltering week in June I was shown to a small, dark room at the farthest back section of the hotel, a city block away from the Brandenburg Gate front entrance. I asked for a change immediately. Just be aware that there is a wide variety of rooms in each category. Otherwise, there is always a big queue at the front desk which is always understaffed. I expect that when the Four Seasons opens next year discerning travelers will have a more attractive option."
