PB hotel design editorial

West Berlin's Charlottenburg district has long carried a different energy from the city's trendier eastern quarters — older money, wider boulevards, a faint afterglow of Cold War-era sophistication — and it's precisely this tension that AIME Studios leaned into when designing The Hoxton, Charlottenburg, which opened in 2023 inside a 1970s building just off the Kurfürstendamm. The concept, dubbed 'Rough Nouveau', sets Brutalist bones against Jugendstil ornament: exposed concrete columns absorb the period's raw mass while mosaic-tiled floors and bespoke Murano glass pendants pull the atmosphere somewhere closer to a Viennese grand café than a postwar office block. The bar and restaurant spaces carry this contradiction most vividly. Patterned encaustic tiles, deep walnut millwork, velvet bar stools in teal, and arching white-tiled fireplaces suggest a room that has been furnished over generations rather than fitted out in a single commission — a gramophone on the central banquette island reinforces the effect. Upstairs, across 234 rooms, the palette softens: scallop-edged headboards upholstered in blush velvet, brass swing-arm lamps, and ikat-print cushions give each room the warmth of a very well-curated private apartment. The result across the whole property is a hotel that treats West Berlin not as a nostalgic footnote but as a living design language still worth speaking.

"I stayed at the hotel for three nights and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. A special shout-out to Mayra, who gave me the warmest welcome at check-in and was incredibly helpful with recommendations for the best things to do and restaurants to try around the city. She was fantastic! Also, a big thank you to Darío and Ketaki. The hotel itself is beautiful, with a lovely interior and a great location for exploring Berlin. I truly enjoyed my stay and will definitely be back next time I’m in Berlin!"

"My wife and I have wonderful memories of this hotel. We would definitely stay here again if we visit Berlin in the future, thanks to its strategic location, modern facilities, and comfortable rooms. The Hoxton Charlottenburg has been a delightful discovery. While the hotel itself surprised us, we want to highlight the extraordinary quality of the staff who assisted us. At the time, we thanked them for their warmth, exquisite kindness, and the attention they showed us—for instance, when helping us resolve a minor luggage issue. However, we would especially like to recognize and thank once again Mayra, Victoria, Florencia, Darío, and Francesco, with whom we had the most contact. Without a doubt, they are the true flag-bearers of The Hoxton Charlottenburg. We would also like to thank the rest of the staff, whose names we do not have, for their professionalism and kindness."

"A true hidden gem in the heart of Berlin From the moment I arrived I felt that the experience was fully curated. The front desk staff were welcoming and full of information. Walking into my room the most appropriate music played from a unique vintage looking player. The phone was curiously vintage looking too. The fridge was stocked with water and milk. I’ve never stayed in a room with milk available like that, Breakfast can be ordered for delivery in advance or enjoyed in the lobby. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable! The location was perfect with access to a tree-lined boulevard that made for pleasant morning and evening walks. An excellent stay that was a highlight of my trip."
