PB hotel design editorial

Hard against the Kurfürstendamm, with the bombed-out Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church visible from its terrace, the Waldorf Astoria Berlin was built into one of the most symbolically charged intersections in the German capital. The 32-storey tower, designed by architect Christoph Mäckler and completed in 2013, rises in limestone-clad tiers above the Zoofenster complex — its stepped silhouette a deliberate echo of interwar American skyscraper form, the very architectural language from which the Waldorf Astoria brand itself emerged. Mäckler's facade, clad in travertine-toned stone with deep-set fenestration and a canopied entrance trimmed in polished bronze, carries the formal composure of a 1930s New York tower transplanted to West Berlin's postwar street grid. Inside, the interiors by HBA — Hirsch Bedner Associates — translate the brand's Art Deco inheritance into a contemporary idiom without fully committing to either register. Guest rooms on the upper floors deploy large-format gold relief wall panels in swirling bas-relief behind upholstered headboards, the effect warm and theatrical, with dark-ground carpets in scrollwork patterns anchoring the palette. The bar, which the images show fitted with a green marble counter, tufted indigo velvet banquettes, brass-disc barstools, and a geometric coffered ceiling in oxidised bronze and gold tile, is where the property's ambitions land most convincingly — closer in atmosphere to a transatlantic liner's smoking room than to any contemporary hotel bar. At 232 rooms and suites across its upper floors, the hotel commands unobstructed views over the Tiergarten and the city's flat western horizon.

"I stayed at the hotel twice, during the Christmas season and in April. The team has been great during both stays. The check-in was smooth, and I got a room with a great view both times. The staff walked to my room and told me more about the amenities. The breakfast had lots of options, and I was regularly asked if I needed anything. I used the sauna in December, which was nice during the cold weather. The spa and gym were undergoing renovations in April, which they informed me ahead of time. They had a partnership with a neighboring hotel, where I could use their spa. I personally like their beds a lot. It is a great feeling waking up and enjoying the view of the city."

"We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria for a weekend in Berlin. While the hotel itself is somewhat dated in places, it was generally fine, and breakfast as well as the staff were pleasant. The spa, however, was a major disappointment and far below the standard one would expect from a five‑star hotel. Several facilities were out of order, including the whirlpool, the steam room, the ice machine, and the counter‑current system in the pool. Cleanliness was also a serious issue: The sauna floor looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time, the loungers were dirty, and used towels were left everywhere. Both showers were grimy, partly broken, and lacked refilled shower gel and shampoo. Fresh towels were not available anywhere in the spa. On top of that, the staff appeared largely uninterested and offered no service or assistance. Overall, this was the worst spa experience we’ve ever had in a high‑end hotel. Unfortunately, this visit left such a negative impression that we won’t be choosing this property again on future trips to Berlin."
