PB hotel design editorial

Julius Ludwig Schüller's early eighteenth-century Baroque palace, commissioned by Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate and left unfinished for nearly two centuries before its completion, gives the Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg one of the most dramatic approaches in European hospitality — a sweeping cobbled forecourt framed by symmetrical wings that terminate in slate-capped cupolas, the whole ensemble surveying the Cologne plain from its elevated ridge above Bergisch Gladbach. The view from the rear parterre, visible in the images, reaches across the Rhine lowlands toward the city's cathedral silhouette on clear days, a panorama that no amount of interior scenography could rival. Inside, the hotel's 83 rooms and suites divide between two registers. The grander category leans into gilded Baroque revival — damask wallcoverings in champagne and ivory, carved headboards with serpentine crests, herringbone parquet, and gilded fauteuils with claw-and-ball feet — while the contemporary rooms take a cooler line: sculptural upholstered headboards in taupe leather, geometric patterned carpet, Directoire-influenced side chairs, and cobalt blue drum lampshades that pull the palette toward restraint. The fine-dining restaurant, Vendôme — long associated with chef Joachim Wissler and multiple Michelin stars — inhabits a room panelled in travertine and warm-toned wood veneer, a brass-based oval table anchoring the entrance, the modernist calm a deliberate counterpoint to the palace's exuberant exterior.

Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg Reviews

"We had a very nice stay at the hotel for 4 days 3 nights The staff is very friendly and helpful and the hotel in general is grand, and it is an experience staying there. Breakfast has lots of options and was not crowded which gave you the peace you needed in the mornings. 4 stars are given as we had an issue with the room which we informed while leaving and so the hotel had no chance to repair it before."

"I would love to give 5 stars, but was small things that should be improved. I had an excellent experience at Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg. The hotel is superb and truly looks like a castle. The cleanliness was impeccable, and from the moment we entered, we were welcomed by a very pleasant scent. The reception staff were extremely friendly, but I wasn't welcome as GhA Platinum member as i was in the hotels i stayed before, also was not told that I need reservation for tea and snacks...to be guest and don't be allowed to enjoy tea and snacks is pitty. We rested perfectly, with no noise at all. The bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable, and I fell asleep almost immediately. The only downside was the light on the air conditioning unit, which stayed on and lit up the room during the night. For those who prefer complete darkness, it may be disturbing. I was also disappointed that we were not informed in advance that tea and snacks require a reservation 24 hours ahead. I woke up especially early, but I was unable to take part. I also really appreciated the fact that the hotel offers premium toiletries and care products from Penhaligon's, a renowned British brand, which shows attention to quality and comfort. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I would definitely return. I recommend this hotel to anyone looking for an elegant, peaceful stay with high-quality service, but stuff should pay more attention at information."
