PB hotel design editorial

Wrapped around a cobblestoned courtyard in Düsseldorf's Altstadt, a sequence of pale sandstone facades with steep slate rooflines frames the kind of contained urban space that the Old Town's dense medieval grain rarely affords. Living Hotel De Medici, set within a converted historic building a few steps from the Rhine, takes its name seriously: the Medici dynasty's patronage of Renaissance painting runs as a literal thread through the interior, from reproduction Flemish and Italian masters hung against whitewashed barrel-vaulted ceilings in the guest rooms to the bar's most theatrical gesture — a backlit counter whose fascia is wrapped in a continuous collage of Renaissance masterworks, Botticelli's Venus dissolving into Rubens figure studies under warm light. The restaurant sustains its own period argument more quietly: a coffered walnut ceiling with bracketed cornices sits above red leather banquettes and linen-draped tables, vintage French advertising lithographs providing a deliberate counterpoint to the architectural grandeur. Suites pair parquet floors with Empire-style writing desks in ebonized wood with gilt mounts, Persian carpets grounding rooms that keep their proportions generous and their palette firmly in cream and warm neutral. The crimson carpet that runs through the bar and vaulted corridors pulls the scheme together — a single chromatic decision that gives the whole interior an operatic undertow without tipping into pastiche.

"I left this hotel confused, as it was so hit or miss when it came to how I felt about my stay. Reception was fantastic and it was clear who you were talking with thanks to name badges that even had flags showing the languages they spoke. Each time I dealt with Reception it was a good experience. Breakfast was seriously tasty however the service was different each day. For example, some days I would get coffee to the table others I would have to get it myself. The Hotel has some incredible artwork and I honestly think it was better than many museums I have visited so should be booked out regularly! I think it could be with just a few minor improvements."

"I stayed at this hotel for a one-night short stay in Düsseldorf. I must say that the location is excellent, right in the Old Town and very close to the Christmas Markets. I booked a Deluxe Double Room (No. 111). The room itself was quite small and a bit worn out, but it still maintained a certain style consistent with the character of the building. Unfortunately, the hotel had a major flaw that significantly affected our stay. The pillows were extremely thin and soft, making it impossible to sleep. I called reception to request firmer pillows, which I believe is a reasonable expectation for a hotel in this category. I was told they would check what was available. About ten minutes later, a staff member arrived with half-size pillows, which were again very soft. As a result, the entire night was a nightmare and we were unable to sleep properly. The hotel certainly has character. I appreciated the art throughout the property and the charm of the building, but it is disappointing that something as basic as proper pillows could not be provided. In addition, the in-room amenities were very limited and consisted only of a single bottle of shampoo and shower gel. I hope the hotel takes these points into consideration and improves in the future. Special thanks to Ms. İlayda at the reception, who handled our check-in process. She was very friendly and welcoming."

"Staying at Medici right now, for the second time. This time it’s extremely disappointing. First and foremost, in November with low night temperatures we have a cold shower. The tap water can be adjusted normally while in the shower its maximum 25 degrees Celsius. We asked at the reception to no effect. Today the same cold shower and no reaction or even apology. The set of the tiniest cosmetic bottles consists of a gel, a shampoo, a lotion. In the whole hotel there’s no single hair conditioner bottle. The room is spacious but sleeping area is uncomfortably cold as well. The living area a bit warmer. Air conditioners are not doing their job. The kitchenette is absolutely empty, not even a single plate or pan or fork, just 2 wine glasses. The purpose of a cooking panel and a dishwasher is not clear. Many empty shelves. A walk-in wardrobe is a plus. But nothing can make up for the cold shower and no concern from the staff. We would consider staying here a big mistake."
