PB hotel design editorial

Hamburg's HafenCity district has spent two decades rebuilding its industrial waterfront identity, and few conversions capture that project as honestly as the 25hours Hotel Altes Hafenamt, which was fitted into a late nineteenth-century red-brick harbour authority building — the Altes Hafenamt itself — whose arched windows and Hanseatic masonry have been left almost entirely untouched. The conversion, carried out with interiors by Werner Aisslinger's Berlin studio, opened in 2017 with 170 rooms across five floors, the building's civic bones providing an immediate counterweight to whatever hospitality softness might otherwise have crept in. Aisslinger's approach throughout is one of productive friction — heritage structure played against deliberately provisional-feeling furnishings. Rooms are painted in dusty rose with exposed copper pipework tracing the walls, headboards fashioned from salvaged panelled doors still showing their numbering, side tables assembled from boat anchor chain, and teal-blue carpet laid beneath bamboo folding chairs that carry a faint echo of mid-century campaign furniture. The lobby lounge leans further into the building's past, with original brickwork left bare under exposed steel beams and ductwork, layered over with kilim rugs and chesterfield sofas in a combination that feels closer to a harbourmaster's private library than a hotel bar. The restaurant continues the material conversation: an onyx-topped counter runs the length of the room, bentwood café chairs pulled up alongside tartan banquette seating, pendant lights fabricated from what appear to be salvaged metal petals hanging above the pass.

"Booked 3 nights from 8-10 May in this old building hotel , on the second day 9 May which is a Saturday there is no room cleaning and tidying up of bed , don’t no why ? Not sure if room maids are not working on Saturday in this hotel ! Also at night (9 May) when back to the hotel room there is no hot water in the tap and the shower. That means we can’t shower before going to bed. The concierge replied that the hot water needs to be repaired but no idea when that can be done as the staff is on leave ! I feel really disappointed and miserable to stay in a hotel that costs £200 a night but not providing any cleaning and hot water. We will certainty not book this hotel ever again. Hope that they will fix the hot water tomorrow but it’s a Sunday. Really not sure. This is madness."

"Located in the "Hafencity", the hotel has been opened in a converted old functional building of the former harbour administration. Although there is no subway line nearby, the hotel is easily reachable via Buslines and a short walk. Staff is friendly, check-in was easy. The decoration of the room is a bit "out of the ordinary" but lovely, the bathroom is small but the shower is large, so all good. Remarkably, although it´s an old building, you can hear a lot of what´s going on the floor above or next door. Combined with a price that is a touch too steep (€ 220), this is what costs the fifth star in my evaluation."

"The location of the hotel is great, if you want a quiet night in central Hamburg (actually, it was a little too quiet to my taste). The area was very safe and modern and it was easy to travel between the central station and hotel both via public transportation and walking. I did not quite like the design of the room. It was very dark, which made it difficult to see if it was clean or not. The pillows (the actual pillows, not the linen) were definetely not clean and could do with a renewal. The room size was however very big and the bathroom was huge - bigger than some hotel rooms, I have stayed in elsewhere. The breakfast buffet had many different choices."

"I really wanted to like this hotel, but they are making it hard to. I first visited the place during the late pandemic-back then hot water and heating stopped working in the middle of the night. The bike for rent did not have air in its tires and a receptionist unwilling to help with that. Not a great start. But as the place as such is cool, the location was convenient (even though the HafenCity still feels like a huge tourist trap and less like real Hamburg), I tried my luck again in 2025. The hotel has things going for it: a cool vibe, a messenger bag you can take out for your sightseeing, quality bikes you can rent for free, a free mini bar. However my main 2 issues were: the beds are really bad! Although booked as a queen, the bed has two separate single mattresses which make you roll into the crack in between. The pillows and linen have a distinctive cheap IKEA feel and are not great for anyone who needs some head rest support. The bathrooms remind me of the hospital ward in Bioshock and some of the furniture was broken. My biggest complaint however was that one night I came „home“ at around 2.30 am and wanted to clarify my departure time the next day. No receptionist or any staff could be found. I thought ok whatever and went to bed. Only to wake up an hour later as somebody had put on music with a bass and a beat in the receptionist area. It was not super loud but as my room was directly above the reception the bass was pulsing through the walls. Again I went down to the reception to talk to someone, no one was there. No sign, no bell. For a hotel that charges 200 quid and up this is not acceptable. I told the nice receptionist next morning, but after over a week there has been no follow up. For this kind of money one can do better even in Hamburg. My advice: bring earplugs! if the prices are like 100-150 Euros it’s ok anything more expensive is not in line with the quality they offer."
