PB hotel design editorial

Jan Störmer's decision to wrap a Hamburg city-centre block in a pale stone and glass facade that steps back dramatically toward a rooftop terrace gave the SIDE Design Hotel its defining civic gesture when it opened in 2001 — a building that converses with the Neustadt streetscape without deferring to it. The Italian architect Matteo Thun handled the interiors across the hotel's 178 rooms and suites, working across nine floors with a vocabulary of white lacquer, floor-to-ceiling glazing, and open-plan bathroom configurations where glass partitions dissolve the boundary between washing and sleeping. The images confirm that approach still holds: rooms where wide-plank oak floors run uninterrupted beneath vessel basins positioned in open relation to the bed, and elsewhere softer updates — grey upholstered headboards, sage velvet tub chairs, patterned wool rugs — that warm Thun's original clinical rigidity without abandoning it. The rooftop terrace, visible from the exterior shot against Hamburg's television tower on the horizon, is laid in hardwood decking and planted with bamboo and ornamental grasses in zinc troughs, teak lounge furniture arranged to catch the western light over the city's roofline. The ground-floor bar and restaurant, reworked in subsequent years, trades Thun's starker early palette for something richer: verde marble bar tops, dusty-teal velvet seating, brass-framed shelving massed with glassware above a living plant wall — a more sensory register that sits in productive tension with the white geometry overhead.

About

As Hamburgs first and only 5-star design hotel, SIDE is directly located in the heart of the city. Newly renovated in 2018 and built by architect Jan Störmer, designed by Matteo Thun and illuminated by Robert Wilson, space and light have been put perfectly in relation to one another. These are the factors, which essentially shape the heart of the hotel and make the SIDE a sensual location for the urban generation of today. The 168 rooms in different categories are minimalist in style, yet welcoming, comfortable and with a personal touch. Ten "flying" suites on the 10th and 11th floor are all decked out in white. A further highlight of the hotel is the Sky Lounge and the roof top terrace on the 8th floor which offer an impressive view over Hamburg. The [m]eatery bar + restaurant serves dry aged steaks, different self-made burgers and special tartars. Colourblocking is a key theme in the SIDE SPA. This wellness oasis is refreshingly colourful and luxuriously furnished.

SIDE Design Hotel Hamburg Reviews

3,204 reviews

"We had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel and would definitely recommend it, especially if you're visiting the Congress Center or exploring the city center. The location is excellent and makes everything easily accessible. The hotel itself is beautiful, with a modern and stylish design that gives it a real boutique feel. Our room was spacious, well-maintained, and very comfortable. One detail we especially appreciated was the incredibly soft and luxurious towels. What truly made our stay stand out was the staff. Everyone at the reception, during breakfast, and from the housekeeping team was exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and professional. Their genuine hospitality made us feel at home throughout our visit. The breakfast was outstanding, offering a wide variety of high-quality options. At €35 per person it is certainly expensive, but the selection and quality were excellent. We also appreciated the large in-room safe and the valet parking service. Having the hotel park the car in the public garage for the same daily rate (€40) was a convenient and thoughtful service. There are a few areas where the hotel could improve. The air conditioning struggled to cool the room adequately, especially during warmer weather. We also found the mattresses quite firm, and the pillows were unfortunately very uncomfortable. We noticed several other guests mentioning the same issue at the reception, so this seems to be a common concern. Finally, the room could benefit from having more electrical outlets for charging devices. Overall, this is a fantastic design hotel with an excellent location, outstanding service, and a wonderful breakfast. With a few improvements to the room comfort, it would easily deserve a perfect rating."
