PB hotel design editorial

A late nineteenth-century red sandstone and yellow-brick facade on Stadthausbrücke in Hamburg's Neustadt district — all arched windows, ornamental ironwork friezes, and a grand porte-cochère carved straight through the building's base — provided the unlikely shell for Tortue Hamburg when it opened in 2019. The building, a former administrative block in the Historicist manner that characterises much of Hamburg's civic streetscape, was converted by Hamburg-based practice Dreimeta, who treated the tension between period fabric and contemporary hospitality as the project's governing idea rather than a problem to be smoothed over. Inside, that tension plays out across two distinct registers. The 126 guestrooms are dressed in a measured palette of dusty periwinkle-blue botanical wallpaper — a Scandinavian-inflected damask pattern repeated across both room categories visible in the images — paired with charcoal velvet bedcovers, black-framed round mirrors, and dark timber desks that keep the atmosphere closer to a well-appointed private apartment than a hotel room. The food and beverage spaces push harder into drama: the ground-floor bar sets black-painted steel frames and tufted leather counter stools against raw brick arches and a chequerboard tile floor, while the restaurant below descends into something altogether more atmospheric, with copper-clad columns, clustered blown-glass pendant lights strung on visible wire, and curved banquettes upholstered in a slubby grey-stripe fabric that absorbs the amber light entirely.

About

The TORTUE HAMBURG is the world en minature – refuge, home, coffee house, living room, hiding place, theatre, catwalk and opera at the same time. It’s a unique place of hospitality, diversity and French ‘Savoir-vivre’ in the middle of Hamburg. The privately managed design hotel in Hamburg’s historic city centre can be found between Jungfernstieg, Große Bleichen, Stadthausbrucke and Neuer Wall in the historic Stadthofe building. Here, guests can find everything under one roof so that they don’t need to leave the hotel. If guests want to leave, however, shopping opportunities, local and long-distance transport links, as well as numerous sights like the Elbphilharmonie or the Speicherstadt are within walking distance. Behind the building’s elegant brick facade from 1888 one can find 128 loft-like rooms in seven different categories with free WiFi and included mini bar, as well as a network of cosy courtyards and rooms with high ceilings which was designed by architectural offices David Chipperfield Architects and Stephen Williams Associates. The interior design from internationally renowned designers like Joyce Wang, Kate Hume and Stephen Williams combines different design eras, styles and moods. The French art of ‘Savoir-vivre’ – of decelerated living – can be found in many details: in the soft textiles, the extralong Divan beds from the luxury manufacturer Hypnos, the mosaic floors, the special light concepts in every room or the velvet seats throughout the hotel. Alongside its hotel business the Member of Design Hotels impresses with its gastronomic diversity. Three restaurants and five bars invite for relaxation and indulgence and offer an excellent quality and quantity. The three restaurant concepts ‘JIN GUI’, ‘brasserie’ and ‘chez l'ami’ celebrate Asian and French-German cuisine at the highest level. The five individually designed bars 'bar noir' with dance floor, the private 'bar privé', the smokers bar and luxury lounge 'bar bleu', the day bar on Neuer Wall 'petite TORTUE' and the new roof terrace 'jardin TORTUE' round off the gastronomic offer of the hotel. TORTUE is an homage to life and the senses – a hotel in a unique location which combines relaxed lifestyle, design aesthetics, excellent service and highest quality.

"Just a quick shout-out to the management of this hotel to thank them and all the staff for the very good experience I have each time I visit this hotel. Every detail in this hotel seems to have been thought through carefully, and the execution is immaculate. Great beds, great showers (one of the. best showers I have experienced, with tons of really hot and really high pressure water), great coffee maker, and superb service at every turn, always with a smile. They are really doing this right."
