PB hotel design editorial

Lake Tegernsee has attracted Bavarian aristocracy and Munich weekenders for centuries, and the Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt sits at the water's edge in Rottach-Egern with the kind of directness that only a genuinely lakeside address can claim — not a view of the water from a distance, but an immediate, almost vertiginous proximity to it. The property, which extends across a complex of traditional Bavarian structures with steeply pitched roofs and rendered facades in warm ochre and cream, was repositioned under the Althoff Collection as a five-star destination with 183 rooms and suites. Christian Jäger's interiors work within a register that is essentially Alpine grand hotel — dark-stained timber, embroidered fabrics, antler detailing used with enough restraint to feel contemporary rather than folkloric. The public spaces carry the atmosphere of a well-appointed country house whose owner travels widely: deep upholstered seating in warm burgundy and forest tones, stone-flagged floors giving way to herringbone parquet in the dining rooms, and a spa complex that extends toward the lake with generous glazing to capture the shifting Bavarian light. The lakeside terrace, furnished with white-painted chairs and parasols, frames the Bavarian Alps beyond the water in a composition that rewards extended sitting. Throughout, the balance between regional tradition and a quieter contemporary sensibility keeps the Überfahrt from tipping into museum-piece territory — the Alpine vocabulary is present but worn lightly.

Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt Reviews

1,456 reviews

"The hotel is ideally situated if you are looking to explore the local hills and mountains with trails ranging from unchallenging to only suitable for mountain goats. Or you can spend your time in the spa, swimming pool, or gym if you'd rather not venture outside. Its a genuine 5 star hotel in terms of its facilities and professionalism but it is also very relaxed. If you turn up in a Bentley (not unusual) or, like me, from the bus stop, you are treated the same. It is also 'solo traveller' friendly. The restaurants serve excellent fine dining and, again, there are no problems with being solo. The rooms are large and airy with lovely views of the mountains or the lake. The staff all speak excellent English but are willing to let you attempt to speak German (which I appreciate)."
