PB hotel design editorial

Music as a design language rather than a decorative afterthought is the governing idea behind JAMS Music Hotel Munich, set within a mid-century commercial building in Haidhausen whose angular brise-soleil facade — visible in the night images, each louvered fin edge-lit in warm gold — gives the streetside terrace a theatrical quality that few Munich neighborhood hotels can match. The Jams bar-restaurant below spills onto a pavement terrace of red parasols and striped folding chairs, deliberately casual against that emphatic brutalist grid above. Inside, the design commits fully to its premise. The bar counter is faced in darkened brass with vinyl records embedded along its front edge, green velvet stools pulled up in a long double row beneath a ceiling strung with Edison filament clusters and honeycomb pendant groups. Guestrooms carry the same conviction: upholstered headboards in burnt orange rise floor to ceiling in tall paneled sections, dark polished concrete underfoot, and in the attic-category rooms, large-scale ink murals — a barcode-tagged moth rendered in graphic black line — sweep across sloped ceilings with the confidence of a record sleeve. One lounge alcove pulls away from the rock-leaning palette entirely, wrapping tufted teal velvet banquettes in a floor-to-ceiling botanical wallcovering of overscaled peonies and dahlias — a deliberate shift in register that keeps the whole interior from settling into predictability.

"We stayed there for four days trip WITHOUT HEATING. The hotel has a systematic problem with heating as some other guests told us. The elevator is also problematic. Worst hotel I ve been in Munich"

"Bad experience. Style - ish over substance. No he lobby looked cute decorated for Xmas. The only thing this hotel has going for it is the record players and the bar HOWEVER the record player is cheap and the bar is never open. We checked into our room and it felt like a prison, it had poop stains on the bed and the heating was broken. The guy on the front desk came and had a look and changed our room which was boiling. As I’m pregnant none of the two are ideal however the guy did his best. When I went down to politely complain there was another guest complaining about the terrible WiFi and requested another heater. She was told to email the manager. I was also told this and given a JAMS business card…… what was also funny is, we went to a Keller down the road and a German couple where using the SAME business card writing an email. Not a good start is it?! The room was modern but you can tell it’s an older hotel with a lick of paint etc, house keeping is poor, there were a few black hairs in our bed not nice. The tv has no streaming service, again poor and channels or in German to international visitors. As we had to sleep with the window open it was v loud not to mention -5 outside. As not all rooms have coffee makers we went down to the bar but shock it opens at 5. Again poor for a hotel. What is the benefit staying here? Again check the bar is open when you arrive No shampoo or conditioner just shower gel. Also a poor look the housekeeping having to use a supermarket trolley to stock up all their goods. This hotel has not impresssed me and I’m struggling to find why you would stay here. Even more so for more than one night. Don’t trust the Instagram pictures the hotel management is poor! Do better!"

"Lovely hotel. Close to the city centre, nice and clean and the staff are very friendly. However we are disappointed and let down that despite advertising the fact that they have a bar and restaurant we are unable to use it as they have chosen to let it out for private functions both last night, tonight and tomorrow night (ie every night of our stay). When we arrived we were told that the bar was closed due to a private function that evening and advised of other establishments locally that would be nice(no problem). Unfortunately we were not advised that the following two nights would also be a problem. It only became apparent as we headed into the bar tonight(night 2) and were told by the DJ that there was a private function on in the bar. When I asked at reception I was only then told that this was the case and that it would also be the same for the following night. This was one of the main reasons we chose this hotel as we always enjoy a drink or two at the end of the day in our chosen hotel, or the possibility of supporting the hotel with a meal in the venue on at least one night. We do understand the time of year and parties etc however we should have been advised of this situation in advance."

"I and my wife had a three-night stay at JAMS in the beginning of November, and we had an absolutely lovely time. This charming hotel honestly has it all for a unique and budget stay in Munich. Let's talk about the location first. Not only is it a few minutes' walk from an S-Bahn connection to the airport, city centre and central station, but there's a tram stop literally around the corner from the front door. Apart from the connectivity, the area around the hotel is also well worth exploring, with a vibrant cultural scene. The hotel itself is delightful. The music theming is consistent throughout the space, without ever becoming over the top and kitschy, with well-chosen, pleasant colours and custom art. The room, likewise, was lovely. While not overly large, it was more sizable than expected, and used the space well. The bed was large and comfortable, and with a padded stool, large desk, and even cushioned window seat, overlooking the city. We also appreciated the vinyl player in the room. With a library of music in the lobby (with music ranging from classic rock, pop, and jazz through to classical and more besides), we could casually bring vinyls up to the room to listen to at the end of a long day wandering the city. The breakfast, also, was very good. It's got a small selection of mostly local spreads, along with good bread and a nice selection of drinks, and the staff was very helpful, offering to make scrambled eggs or omelets if asked. The staff in general was delightful. Helpful, personable and welcoming, and always ready to help out whenever we needed anything. All in all, and with a very good price point, JAMS is definitely a place we'll return to when our travels take us back to Munich."
