PB hotel design editorial

Sitting at the edge of the Lenbachgärten, one of Munich's most quietly distinguished addresses, a cream limestone facade curves gently at its corner, its Neoclassical proportions and wrought-iron balconettes suggesting a building with considerably more history than it actually has. The Charles Hotel, which opened in 2007 as part of Rocco Forte Hotels, was purpose-built to this quietly assured scale — seven floors, 160 rooms — with interiors by Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte's sister and the group's design director, who has made a career of finding the contemporary frequency within traditional European grandeur. Polizzi's rooms layer warmth over restraint: upholstered headboards in charcoal flannel, kilim-patterned bed runners in rust and ochre, striped wool curtains in amber and chocolate, and woven wool carpet underfoot. The curved corner suites, visible in the images, take full advantage of their geometry — floor-to-ceiling French doors wrapped around a bowed wall, green silk drapes pooling softly against cream plasterwork, balconies overlooking the tree canopy below. The hotel's bar carries a different atmosphere entirely, its circular coffered ceiling and walnut bookshelves lined with large-format black-and-white portraits giving it the feeling of a private members' library. Below ground, the spa pool anchors itself with a dramatic backlit coral mosaic mural, a vivid counterpoint to the considered restraint of the floors above.

"We just completed a 5 day visit to Munich in this 5 star first class hotel. We booked a family room and a deluxe garden view room for our family of 6. You need to look nowhere else when looking for a great hotel in Munich. If traveling with children The Charles goes above and beyond for the little ones. The rooms have been beautifully renovated and are probably the best and largest in the city. Their standard room is 431 sq.ft. The hotel is located on a very quiet high end street but is also a short walk to all attractions. The entire staff exemplifies the highest service standards. You will be glad you selected this hotel for your stay."

"The staff are wonderful , a huge asset to the hotel . Every area of the hotel is immaculate, very classy , sophisticated in style . The food and beverage is lovely , presentation to match. Breakfast is plentiful with a hot choice as well , made to order. The breakfast room looks very inviting with top quality offerings. The rooms are large with very comfortable beds and pillows and a lovely powerful shower . The spa is beautiful and spotlessly clean. We were sad to leave but will definitely be back soon ."

"Nice location, great rooms, good restaurant — but some important issues: Room assignment I requested a quiet room when making the booking. At check-in, I was initially assigned a room overlooking a busy street with traffic. When I asked whether my request had been received, I was told: “Yes, but we don’t have any courtyard-view rooms — let me see what we can do.” Two minutes later, I was offered another room in the same category overlooking a very quiet street with no traffic. I was fully satisfied — but it makes me wonder why this option was not offered from the beginning. Unfortunately, there is another issue that may affect only more sensitive guests: the hotel has a swimming pool in the basement, and the pumps and ventilation systems operate 24/7. This creates vibrations that cannot be heard but can be felt through the mattress. I was unable to sleep after about 3 a.m. every night because of this. Breakfast The breakfast selection is excellent. However, eggs, tea, and coffee must be ordered separately. On the first day, the waiter forgot my order; after waiting 25 minutes, I had to remind them, and what I finally received was not what I had ordered. I thought this was just an isolated incident — but the next day was worse. I waited 35 minutes (!) for my order. A lady seated next to me ordered coffee and left after waiting 25 minutes without receiving it. The service here clearly needs improvement. Shower and maintenance The shower drainage was not working properly — water accumulated and overflowed outside the cabin. I tried calling housekeeping, but the phone was programmed incorrectly: instead of housekeeping, it connected me to the restaurant. I then sent a WhatsApp message to guest relations and received apologies and confirmation that the issue would be fixed. Later, when the room was cleaned, I mentioned the problem again and was reassured it had been resolved. However, when I took a shower in the evening, the same problem happened again, and the phone still had incorrect numbers. I had to complain for a third time, after which a gentleman finally came and fixed the issue quickly. Spa The spa team was lovely — very polite, professional, and genuinely helpful. It was a pleasure dealing with them. However, I do wonder what type of massage training the therapist had. I would strongly recommend taking an advanced course and everything will be 100% perfect!"
