PB hotel design editorial

Sitting at the edge of the Lenbachgärten, one of Munich's most quietly distinguished addresses, a cream limestone facade curves gently at its corner, its Neoclassical proportions and wrought-iron balconettes suggesting a building with considerably more history than it actually has. The Charles Hotel, which opened in 2007 as part of Rocco Forte Hotels, was purpose-built to this quietly assured scale — seven floors, 160 rooms — with interiors by Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte's sister and the group's design director, who has made a career of finding the contemporary frequency within traditional European grandeur. Polizzi's rooms layer warmth over restraint: upholstered headboards in charcoal flannel, kilim-patterned bed runners in rust and ochre, striped wool curtains in amber and chocolate, and woven wool carpet underfoot. The curved corner suites, visible in the images, take full advantage of their geometry — floor-to-ceiling French doors wrapped around a bowed wall, green silk drapes pooling softly against cream plasterwork, balconies overlooking the tree canopy below. The hotel's bar carries a different atmosphere entirely, its circular coffered ceiling and walnut bookshelves lined with large-format black-and-white portraits giving it the feeling of a private members' library. Below ground, the spa pool anchors itself with a dramatic backlit coral mosaic mural, a vivid counterpoint to the considered restraint of the floors above.

"This is a stunning hotel within just a few minutes walk of the Old Town. I stayed in a Park View suite on the 6th floor and was able to see the alps in the distance whilst enjoying breakfast in bed. We had dinner in Florio where we ate the most delicious Italian food and the famous chef; Fulvio Pierangelini, came to ensure everything was perfect - it was! We had our meetings in Salon 1, which had huge windows and access to a garden terrace, which made the sessions far more enjoyable and engaging. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for an exquisite stay in Munich, it is perfect."

"We travel a lot as a family. We know the difference between a hotel that looks good on paper and one that actually delivers. The Charles delivers. Every single part of it. We recently spent two nights at the Charles, and not one moment felt ordinary. Leaving was hard and we wished we'd had more time. It was my first stay, and it was an intergenerational trip. My father, my son, and myself. It had to be special. My father insisted we stay here. He'd already been several times, and now I understand why. From the moment we stepped out of the car, Lena and her team were there to greet us and make us feel like we'd arrived home. There is no better way to start a hotel stay. The entire concierge team set the tone from the moment we arrived. Warm, professional, and genuinely attentive without being overbearing. Not in a showy way. Just quietly brilliant at their jobs and utterly genuine in their hospitality. Always one step ahead of any request. That kind of service is rarer than it should be. The rooms are magnificent. Fourth floor, incredible view over the gardens towards the old city. Spacious, beautifully appointed, and the kind of space where you actually want to spend time. We were limited on time and had a lot to see, otherwise I would have happily just stayed in the room. That honestly says everything. Breakfast is outstanding. A phenomenal variety of fresh, local food and wait staff who are attentive and genuinely lovely. Not performatively lovely. Actually lovely. We lingered far longer than planned and ate far more than we should have. Post-dinner drinks at the bar turned into one of the highlights of the trip. Bayern Munich was on, we settled in, and what started as a quiet drink turned into one of those unexpectedly brilliant nights that will form a core memory for our family. Great atmosphere. Great drinks. The bar staff knew exactly when to engage and when to leave us to it. The spa deserves its own mention. Beyond exceptional and one of the genuine standout features of the hotel. If you're staying here and skipping it, you are simply missing out. As for the neighbourhood, I just want to live there. Truly perfect. Close enough to the old city to feel connected to Munich, far enough to avoid being swallowed by it. That balance is hard to get right. The Charles gets it exactly right. Is it the best hotel in Munich? Undoubtedly. Is it one of the best hotels in the world? Again, undoubtedly. I have stayed at some of the finest hotels in the world in some remarkable locations. The Charles is easily in my top five."

"Our stay was top notch all around. They went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. It was our anniversary and they sent a bottle of wine and put rose petals around the room. Every request we had was professionally addressed. They even made us a large to go bag for breakfast as we left before the daily breakfast. We upgraded to a park view Junior suite and it was absolutely worth it! The view was amazing. The Irish bartender truly made our evenings memorable. The drinks were the best we ever had. He was incredibly personable and made us want to come back each night (which we did!). This stay was completely worth the expense. If you want a good place to feel truly cared for in Munich look no further."
