PB hotel design editorial

A late nineteenth-century Wilhelminian villa on the edge of Saarbrücken's Nauwieser Viertel — the city's most characterful quarter, known for its independent bookshops, weekend markets, and left-leaning café culture — provides the structural shell for the Esplanade Saarbrücken, its white-rendered facade and sandstone window surrounds preserved with care while the interior was stripped back and rebuilt in a confidently contemporary register. The building's stepped gable profile and arched fenestration, visible in the dusk exterior shot, carry the massing of a prosperous Gründerzeit townhouse, yet the ground-floor glazing has been opened up with floor-to-ceiling steel frames that announce something altogether different within. Inside, the design turns on a productive tension between the villa's tall original windows — through which mature plane trees press their canopy — and a palette drawn from darker, more urban materials: a matte black curved reception desk lit from beneath, perforated dark ceiling panels scattered with pinpoint light, and cascading metal mesh curtains that partition the lobby from the restaurant beyond. Herringbone oak flooring runs throughout, providing warmth against the graphite tones. Guest rooms carry the same restrained logic — linen-upholstered headboards with integrated LED strips, wire side chairs with velvet accent seating in blush or red, and oak joinery units framing Nespresso machines and wine glasses with the quiet care of a well-edited apartment. The overall effect is closer to a considered private residence than a programmatic hotel conversion.

ESPLANADE Saarbrücken Reviews

"This hotel is an unexpected gem. The entry level "cosy room" category we booked was a delight; high ceilings, beautiful light, flawless design (they designed and made their own shower tiles) and immaculate house keeping. The service at reception and breakfast was the perfect mix of accommodating, friendly, and professional. Big thanks to Julia for looking after us so well."

"This was a truly wonderful experience. We booked the room and 6 course meal package which really was good value. The hotel is beautifully refurbished and our room was very comfortable with all amenities - particularly like the shower! We went with our little dog who was also well looked after with a dog bed and two bowls waiting in the room! The meal was absolutely delicious, the presentation very original and the flavors worthy of the 2 Michelin stars. We took the wine pairing which the sommelier perfectly matched with our dishes. The breakfast was also very good served at the table. I think this hotel stands out with its friendly and discreet service, thank you to all and we very much hope to come again when on another road trip."
