PB hotel design editorial

From a site on Academias Street, a short walk from Syntagma Square and within direct sightline of the Acropolis, the Academias Hotel Autograph Collection makes its ambitions clear before you step inside. The facade — limestone cladding in a cool grey register, squared window apertures with deep black reveals, and a ground-floor entry treatment of brushed bronze verticals lit from above — borrows its grammar from mid-century Athenian modernism while pressing it toward something more precisely urban and contemporary. The building rises across ten floors, its massing disciplined rather than monumental, the street presence sharpened at dusk when warm light bleeds through the bronze screens flanking the entrance canopy. Inside, the interiors navigate between the city's classical inheritance and a distinctly current idiom. Guestrooms carry dark steel frame detailing against pale walls — a parti lifted from Parisian apartment design — with herringbone timber floors, forest-green velvet headboards edged in brass, and, from the upper floors, an uninterrupted frame of the Parthenon sitting above the Athenian roofline. The cocktail bar anchors the mood of the public spaces: fluted brass bar fronting a dark marble counter, circular pendant lighting, deep green panelling incised with a geometric Art Deco trellis, and a Plato quote set into the wall that signals exactly the kind of cultured self-awareness the Autograph Collection rewards. Below ground, the spa pool is treated with theatrical restraint — black ceilings, aquamarine underlighting, a glass partition separating the water from the fitness area beyond.

Academias Hotel, Autograph Collection Reviews

"Our recent stay at the Academias Hotel in Athens was exceptional and reminded me that truly outstanding hospitality still exists. Shortly after arriving, I realized I had left my cell phone in a taxi. What happened next genuinely amazed me. The bellhops and front desk staff immediately sprang into action with the urgency and coordination of an ER response team — making calls, working their systems, and leveraging the taxi association network to track down my phone. There was a palpable sense of teamwork and determination. I later learned they apparently have a streak of never losing a guest’s phone, and it was clear they took enormous pride in both helping guests and maintaining that standard of service. While we waited, the bartender — without being asked — thoughtfully brought water to us and other waiting guests, a small gesture that said a lot about the culture of hospitality at this property. One of the bellhops also took the time to explain a beautiful original artwork that had been painted onsite just the day before, offering what felt like an expert description and adding a personal, memorable touch to the experience. Thankfully, my phone was recovered, but what stayed with me most was the extraordinary level of care, professionalism, and pride shown by the entire team. In an era when personalized service can feel rare, the staff at Academias exceeded every expectation. I cannot recommend this property highly enough."

"Loved this hotel. Super nice people. The hotel AC was awesome - it kept the room super cool. First time in Europe I was actually cold in a room. Which is a good thing! Only small issue was in the middle of the night it resets to 20. And to heat up the room I had to open the window. The room was great. The breakfast was delicious. The staff were so attentive and friendly. We also had dinner twice on the rooftop. Great views of the Acropolis. And good sushi!"

"Sadly, once again, we are left wondering if we stayed in a different hotel to any of the 5 star reviews for here. Check in was smooth. Offered a welcome non alcoholic drink. Be careful and read the small print of whatever you sign at reception. It is long winded but, trust me, it is worth it in case you have any issues. Our room was higher up the building and facing the road. To call it a 'city view' is bordering on a lie quite honestly. I do not believe facing a block of flats over the road a city view. A view - yes. Of flats - yes. In a City - yes, but come on! The noise was horrific, and I mean that. We have stayed in so many hotels around the World and yes, that includes major cities and not had this issue. We thought the window had been left open. It was impossible to get any sleep. The road outside is phenomenally noisy. We were offered another room somewhere in the hotel but a lower grade room than we had but we would still have had to pay the same price. Really? Dreadful! We didn't find the hotel good value for money either. Over priced for a room that, aside from being large, wasn't what you'd call luxurious at all. Nice shower. No doubt there will be a response to this review from the management. I would prefer it if there wasn't as we have been through this in a very detailed way both face to face and via email. Some guests plainly loved it. We did not. That's life!"

"Lovely hotel with very welcoming and helpful front desk. Breakfast was pleasant with a small buffet and good selection on the à la carte menu. I dined at the rooftop restaurant which had lovely views. The hotel was very helpful prior to my stay when I was enquiring about sightseeing and using the hoteI arranged a half day private city tour for me. This was the only disappointment as there was a cycle race event and some roads were closed so the ‘ tour’ took only 3 hours and the driver only took me to the Acropolis and the Lycabettus Hill so hardly worth the EUR200. It would have been nice to be informed of the event as I could have done the tour on a different day. Other than that, a very pleasant stay."

"This hotel had amazing service and a great location for seeing the sights in Athens. Don’t skip the rooftop bar for awesome views. The breakfast was a standout, with plenty of healthy options like fresh fruit, protein pudding, chia seed pudding, oatmeal, eggs. Order the Greek eggs off the menu as well - delicious. Would certainly recommend and stay here again. The only thing I didn’t love was the possible see through wall in the bathroom. The control for this is outside the bathroom, so if you don’t trust your travel partner, they could have a full view of you in the shower. Very strange option in my opinion."
