PB hotel design editorial

Syntagma Square sits at the geographic and symbolic heart of Athens, and the building that houses the Athens Capital Center Hotel — MGallery stands directly within that gravitational field, with the Grande Bretagne as its immediate neighbor and the Acropolis framing the rooftop horizon at dusk. The eight-storey facade presents a composed neoclassical register: cream limestone cladding articulated by dark bronze window surrounds, the massing disciplined and urban without straining for grandeur. Inside, the interiors work a contemporary European language — walnut headboards paired with navy upholstery, brass pendant clusters suspended above beds on long drop rods, and open-plan bathrooms finished in pale veined marble with navy cabinetry providing the sole note of colour against an otherwise restrained palette. The restaurant is where the design finds its most confident moment: a ceiling dense with oversized brass ring pendants, black-framed glazed partitions mirroring the room back on itself, and trailing greenery softening what might otherwise read as a purely metropolitan interior. The rooftop pool terrace, with its teak decking and navy loungers framed by perforated metal screens in a bold graphic pattern, delivers the view that the location promises — the Parthenon visible above the Grande Bretagne's roofline, the city spreading west toward Piraeus. As part of Accor's MGallery collection, the property targets a design-conscious traveller who wants the central Athens address without the museum-piece atmosphere of the square's older institutions.

"I stayed at this hotel twice, and both times I had a really great experience. The rooms were amazing, with a lot of attention to detail. I especially liked the small lights under the bed and in the bathroom that turn on automatically when you get up at night. It is such a simple feature, but it made the room feel even more comfortable and very well thought out. The breakfast was very tasty and had a great variety of options. On top of that, you can order different types of eggs, and all of them were really good. The restaurant on the top floor was also great for lunch or dinner. Overall, both stays were really enjoyable, and I would happily stay there again."

"This is fairly new property right in the center of Athens near the Parlaimnet building. Nice, modern rooms. Some neat architectural features including a 10 story spiral staircase and an atrium. Rooftop pool, bar, and upscale restaurant. Great breakfast. We had a room classified as a “balcony” room, but those rooms actually have large 9th-floor terraces with great views. Staff very friendly and helpful. Our only complaint is that the gorgeous shower space had a rain forest shower head. My wife found that impossible to use."

"The hotel’s location is undoubtedly its strongest asset. Situated just one minute from Syntagma Square, it places you right in the heart of Athens, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and public transport. The Acropolis is also within comfortable walking distance—about 20 minutes on foot—which makes it an ideal base for sightseeing. However, one of the biggest disadvantages is the lack of on-site parking. Guests arriving by car should be prepared for extremely high parking fees nearby. The rates are steep—from 20 EUR to 28 EUR for the first hour and 3 EUR for each additional hour. Over the course of our four-day stay, parking alone cost us nearly 300 EUR, which significantly impacted the overall value of the stay. Another somewhat disappointing aspect is the hotel’s approach to its advertised SPA services. While the hotel mentions having a SPA, the reality is less straightforward. Massage services are outsourced and can only be arranged in-room, yet the rooms are not spacious enough to comfortably accommodate a massage setup. Additionally, guests wishing to use a sauna must go to a different building altogether. This arrangement feels unusual and below expectations for a five-star hotel. The breakfast experience was generally positive in terms of food quality and variety. There was a good assortment of options, and everything we tried was delicious. However, the service left room for improvement. It tended to be slow, and we often had to repeat our orders or remind the staff, which detracted from an otherwise pleasant start to the day. For a price of 35 EUR per person for a breakfast I expect really not to forget my order. On a brighter note, the café located on the ground floor is a standout feature. It has a great atmosphere and is perfect for multiple occasions—whether you want to enjoy a morning coffee, get some work done, have a glass of wine, or even dine in the evening. It became one of our favorite spots during the stay. Overall, our experience was good, largely thanks to the unbeatable location and the enjoyable café. That said, considering the price we paid, certain aspects—particularly parking, SPA services, and breakfast service—could and should be improved to meet the expectations of a five-star hotel."
