PB hotel design editorial

What the Campana Brothers brought to Athens when YES! Hotels commissioned them to redesign the Olympic Palace building near Syntagma Square was something the city's hotel scene had rarely encountered: a sensibility rooted in Brazilian craft culture — shadow puppets, folk silhouettes, found-object assemblage — grafted onto a seven-floor 1960s concrete frame. The NEW Hotel opened in 2011 with 79 rooms across the refurbished structure, its facade lit at night with oversized stacked lettering that signals intention from across the square. Fernando and Humberto Campana treated the interiors as an ongoing argument between their São Paulo instincts and Greek material culture, most visibly in the guest rooms, where gold-leaf shadow puppet figures parade across coral-pink accent walls beside Thonet bentwood chairs painted lacquer red, and light oak floors ground headboards upholstered in pale grey velvet. The more arresting rooms position a faceted gold-mirrored vanity unit — sculptural enough to function as freestanding art — against floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Acropolis directly. On the rooftop, the Tudor Hall restaurant carries a different register entirely: dark walnut floors, deeply cushioned olive-velvet armchairs arranged around white-clothed tables, and pendant lamps in crumpled brass and leather that suggest something between a private Athenian library and a stage set. The fibre-optic star ceiling shifts the atmosphere toward the theatrical after dark, the Athens skyline pressing in through the full-length glazing on every side.

About

Located on Filellinon Street, next to Constitution Square (Syntagma Square), this contemporary design hotel, is perfectly positioned for the sights of Athens, including the ruins of Plaka, the Acropolis and its museum, the stylish boutique shopping district of Kolonaki, and the bustling business zone. Situated in the former Olympic Palace Hotel, New Hotel encompasses the heritage of its past by using recycled parts of the old hotel and reinterpreted local materials to create a complete work of art, where outstanding interiors, unusual custom-made furniture and handmade fixtures make guests feel that they live and breathe in a major art installation. Offering an entirely NEW approach this 79-room and suites establishment, is one of the city’s finest examples of modernist architecture and the first ever hotel project of award designer duo, Fernando and Humberto Campana.

"I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. We showed up with a crew of about 40 people, and to say that they handled us with joy and complete support is an understatement. By day two we no longer had to give coffee orders, anything we wanted extra was handled quickly and with grace. We never heard a no. Any issue we threw at them was solved - from more diet coke to "my wife lost her jewelry in the sink" - all was resolved. The hotel itself is funky fresh, the location is super central, the rooms are lovely and the food was excellent. Really highly recommend these guys - special shoutout to Maria, who I personally drove crazy (but you wouldn't have never known), ALL the front desk people, who helped with recommendations, reservations and any other little request - and last, but never least, Bill, our favorite bar tender, who never even batted an eye lid when we showed up with 20 people 20 mins before closing. Go there, go now, and enjoy Greece!"

"I had a fantastic stay at the New Hotel Athens. The staff truly made the experience—they were welcoming, attentive, and always ready to help with recommendations or anything we needed. The location is ideal, with excellent restaurants, shopping, and major sights all within easy walking distance, including the Acropolis. If you have the chance, don’t miss the rooftop bar. The views over Athens are incredible, especially at sunset. And be sure to ask for Bill—he’s a great guy and adds to the whole experience."

"Amazing hotel! Amazing staff! I was with a group of 40+ people staying for a business training, using the conference room all week. The guest rooms and conference room were perfect for our needs. What made it even better was the service from all of the staff who work at New Hotel. We had a massive group, with lots of needs, and they went above and beyond to accommodate everyone. Both lounges/restaurants served great food and drinks. The hotel is in a great location, close to many attractions and restaurants. Would 100% stay at New Hotel again!"

"Despite its prime location, the hotel is located between two one way streets . If you come with a car, please ensure to arrive to the street which is located at the entrance to the hotel, otherwise, you will be required to drive thru very narrow streets with cars parked on each side in a dense and location that makes it very difficult for a normal driver to drive safely. We have gotten VIP treatment from the reception team in all aspects. The hotel team did everything to satisfy our needs, especially by meeting our special breakfast menu & preparing a box with food when we had to check out early in the morning. Our only disappointment was the room size & especially a strange & unsafe design of a thick glass part dividing the bathroom from the bed. This thick glass narrows the passageway and part of it protrudes in such a way that it caused me to repeatedly hit my hand when I have tried to enter into the room. I was expecting from a 5* hotel to cover this protruding part with a soft cover that will reduce the force of the blow to my hand. Other than that, the bed was very comfortable as well as the shower and water flow. The room price was the highest in all our tour in Greece : E945 for 3 nigh stay including breakfast."
