PB hotel design editorial

What the Campana Brothers brought to Athens when YES! Hotels commissioned them to redesign the Olympic Palace building near Syntagma Square was something the city's hotel scene had rarely encountered: a sensibility rooted in Brazilian craft culture — shadow puppets, folk silhouettes, found-object assemblage — grafted onto a seven-floor 1960s concrete frame. The NEW Hotel opened in 2011 with 79 rooms across the refurbished structure, its facade lit at night with oversized stacked lettering that signals intention from across the square. Fernando and Humberto Campana treated the interiors as an ongoing argument between their São Paulo instincts and Greek material culture, most visibly in the guest rooms, where gold-leaf shadow puppet figures parade across coral-pink accent walls beside Thonet bentwood chairs painted lacquer red, and light oak floors ground headboards upholstered in pale grey velvet. The more arresting rooms position a faceted gold-mirrored vanity unit — sculptural enough to function as freestanding art — against floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Acropolis directly. On the rooftop, the Tudor Hall restaurant carries a different register entirely: dark walnut floors, deeply cushioned olive-velvet armchairs arranged around white-clothed tables, and pendant lamps in crumpled brass and leather that suggest something between a private Athenian library and a stage set. The fibre-optic star ceiling shifts the atmosphere toward the theatrical after dark, the Athens skyline pressing in through the full-length glazing on every side.

"We went to New Hotel for dinner as a family a few days ago. We settled in, my husband and I had some wine, and we got ready to order. Unfortunately, half the items on the menu were not available! I asked for the Feta cheese crème brûlée but our sever politely told us that it was not available on that day, so we went for the Burrata figuring it was a safe choice, but again, alas, it was not available. Salmon carpaccio? Terribly sorry. So finally we settled for 2 Greek salads as starters and then the boys had burgers, my husband had the lamb shank and I asked for the grilled salmon which, you guessed it, was not available!! At this point we all started to wonder how you could possibly claim to have a full restaurant on-site when half the food wasn’t available!! So while the service was excellent and our server did his best to offer us alternate options on the menu and recommended a superb wine, and while the food we did manage to eat was tasty and well-presented, it was extremely disappointing to have such a limited choice of items available and honestly it just reflected so poorly on the hotel!"

"The location is excellent, situated within walking distance of the Acropolis, Monastiraki, numerous great restaurants, and popular shopping areas for tourists. Although it is on the pricier side, the rates are consistent with similar properties in the area. The front-desk staff are friendly and helpful. However, as a Titanium member, I didn’t receive much of an upgrade to my room."

"I traveled to Greece with my wife and my elderly parents, who had long dreamed of visiting the country and reconnecting with friends who live there. Wanting to make this trip special for them, we turned it into a road journey through several beautiful regions, ending in Athens. I chose this hotel for its convenient location, booking through Marriott Bonvoy, hoping our final stop would be comfortable and memorable. To give my parents a pleasant experience after many days on the road, I booked two junior suites with a city view, instead of standard rooms. We were warmly welcomed by a very kind staff member at check‑in, which made us feel confident we had chosen the right place. Unfortunately, things changed once we reached the rooms. Although spacious, neither of them was actually a suite. One faced the main street, and the other faced a side street directly toward the dumpsters, where noise continued throughout the night. This was far from the “city view” we had paid extra for — especially disappointing considering the care I tried to put into choosing the right rooms for my parents. I went to the front desk to explain the situation, hoping for understanding or at least an attempt to help. Instead, I received a sarcastic response saying that “this is it.” No alternatives were offered — no room change, no downgrade with a price adjustment, nothing. At that moment, I felt not only misled, but also dismissed, which was particularly upsetting given that I was trying to ensure comfort for my elderly parents. The hotel has good facilities and an excellent location, and I truly wish I could highlight those aspects. But the attitude of the staff member and the feeling of having been deceived regarding the room type overshadowed everything else. It’s disappointing to end a meaningful family trip with this kind of experience."
