PB hotel design editorial

Low-slung pavilions stepping down toward the Cretan coastline west of Chania, their raw concrete soffits and timber-screen facades dissolving into the scrub and hillside behind — this is the architectural grammar that gives Domes Zeen Chania its particular character. The resort, which opened in 2021 as part of the Domes Resorts collection, arranges its villas and suites across a terraced landscape where drought-resistant planting and exposed local stonework push back against any suggestion of manicured resort uniformity. The pool terrace, framed by wooden pergola structures and lined with straw-thatched parasols, draws a clear line between the Aegean vernacular and a cooler, more international minimalism — palm canopies against flat concrete rooflines, the combination feeling more North African than conventionally Greek. Inside, the rooms carry a material seriousness that distinguishes them from the whitewash-and-blue-tile shorthand of much Aegean hospitality design. Polished stone floors the colour of dry earth, microcement ceilings, walnut joinery built into woven-grass wall panels, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Sea of Crete like a held breath — the effect is closer to a considered private house than a resort room. Tribal ceramic objects sit on open walnut shelving alongside sculptural vessels, adding a curatorial warmth to interiors that might otherwise tip toward austerity. The restaurant continues the palette — burgundy velvet chairs against timber-slatted screens and brick-toned floors — keeping the whole property in deliberate, unhurried conversation with its landscape.

Domes Zeen Chania, Chania Reviews

"The architecture is impressive and the views from the hotel, both from the lobby and the rooms, are stunning. Waking up in the morning with a direct view of the sea was a highlight. The pool is also very nice, but not heated in winter, so they cannot really be used during that time. During summer it can get very crowded with a lot of kids. There is no sauna and the spa area is quite small. The fitness area was very limited, with only 3-4 machines and outside. It could not really be considered a proper gym. Breakfast was excellent with a great view and very good products. Dinner, however, was more average. The quality of the food was good, but there were often long waiting times between courses and the selection was not very varied. Overall, still a pleasant stay with a few areas that could be improved."

"Right from our arrival, we found Domes Zeen to be a top hotel. We arrived late in the evening and still received a warm welcome. Our room was very good, with plenty of space and great facilities. We used the Beach House restaurant regularly (Zamana was closed at the time) and there were some issues with service and menu availability, especially for the first couple of days. This was attended to swiftly by Guest Relations, and it was clear that they wanted to put things right. It was also very early in the season: the hotel had only opened for the summer a few days earlier, so these things can happen. The hotel’s location is pretty good: it’s on the edge of town, which means that it’s reasonably quiet and relaxing, and you can walk to Chania Old Town in about 20 minutes. We hired a car for a few days and there isn’t really a proper car park at the hotel. We always found a space but it was usually a bit off-road! I would certainly recommend Domes Zeen Chania for a family holiday. The facilities are great and staff make a superb effort to keep their customers happy. Special thanks to Christos in Guest Relations for going the extra mile!"

"We are just back from a fantastic stay at Domes Zeen Chania. Unfortunately when we arrived the weather was not what we were hoping for but everything else was absolutely five star. Particularly wanted to mention Angela, Marina and Chris who went above and beyond to help and make our stay great. When I needed to make a trip to the doctors on a Saturday. They were amazing and managed to arrange me an appointment, help with taxis and then kept in touch throughout the stay to make sure we were ok. Five star customer service. The rooms and food were also wonderful, we really enjoyed the stay and would highly recommend. One tip we had was to get to breakfast before 9am as this is when it started to get busy. We walked along the front to Chania Old Town most nights to eat and restaurants we particularly enjoyed were Tamam and Salis (in the old town) and Kaiki (on the way to the old town). We had a great stay and would love to come back!"

"Firstly the staff at the hotel are some of the most genuine and friendly staff we’d met a hotel. Really felt like part of family and you could see so many regulars retuning back. The villas we perfectly designed and nice comfy beds. It’s not 5 stars for us as we travelled over Easter that’s probably out of season so didn’t get what I imagine is the full Domes experience. One of the two restaurants was closed. The outdoor gym isn’t useable when raining or cold. No bars open in the evening. The food was good although the half board menu is limited and even more so on every night 1 or the two dishes were not available. As said im sure peak season this hotel has a different vibe. Just sorry we didn’t get to experience it."

"We had a lovely stay here with family. The staff is wonderful and even offered us free half board when they realized we didn’t get adjoining rooms as requested. The rooms are enormous as are the plunge pools. The beach is unswimmable, which is disappointing for a Crete vacation. The buffet breakfast was spare and disappointing but when we alerted the staff to this, they sent us to the non buffet breakfast, which was actually wonderful. The hotel involves a lot of stairs and walking, more than any we have seen. It was fine for us, but perhaps difficult for very young kids or anyone who struggles with stairs. The lounge that is included is a wonderful addition- happy hour with sunset views and all you can drink wine and cheese was the perfect cap to a day."
