PB hotel design editorial

Low-slung pavilions stepping down toward the Cretan coastline west of Chania, their raw concrete soffits and timber-screen facades dissolving into the scrub and hillside behind — this is the architectural grammar that gives Domes Zeen Chania its particular character. The resort, which opened in 2021 as part of the Domes Resorts collection, arranges its villas and suites across a terraced landscape where drought-resistant planting and exposed local stonework push back against any suggestion of manicured resort uniformity. The pool terrace, framed by wooden pergola structures and lined with straw-thatched parasols, draws a clear line between the Aegean vernacular and a cooler, more international minimalism — palm canopies against flat concrete rooflines, the combination feeling more North African than conventionally Greek. Inside, the rooms carry a material seriousness that distinguishes them from the whitewash-and-blue-tile shorthand of much Aegean hospitality design. Polished stone floors the colour of dry earth, microcement ceilings, walnut joinery built into woven-grass wall panels, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Sea of Crete like a held breath — the effect is closer to a considered private house than a resort room. Tribal ceramic objects sit on open walnut shelving alongside sculptural vessels, adding a curatorial warmth to interiors that might otherwise tip toward austerity. The restaurant continues the palette — burgundy velvet chairs against timber-slatted screens and brick-toned floors — keeping the whole property in deliberate, unhurried conversation with its landscape.

Domes Zeen Chania, Chania Reviews

"We had a lovely stay here with family. The staff is wonderful and even offered us free half board when they realized we didn’t get adjoining rooms as requested. The rooms are enormous as are the plunge pools. The beach is unswimmable, which is disappointing for a Crete vacation. The buffet breakfast was spare and disappointing but when we alerted the staff to this, they sent us to the non buffet breakfast, which was actually wonderful. The hotel involves a lot of stairs and walking, more than any we have seen. It was fine for us, but perhaps difficult for very young kids or anyone who struggles with stairs. The lounge that is included is a wonderful addition- happy hour with sunset views and all you can drink wine and cheese was the perfect cap to a day."

"We stayed here as part of a delta vacation. It was an incredible resort. The rooms were lovely. We had a private pool and lounge area. The room had a coffee maker and very nice bathroom. They have an outdoor fitness which was great to combat the amazing Greek food at the resort. We had outstanding breakfasts at the resort which a huge and delicious assortment of foods and beverages. The staff is incredibly nice and service oriented. We were a big group, larger than most families, and they were very accommodating. Make reservations for dinner in advance. The pool is very nice. They have 2 ocean access points with chairs and you can order great food from the hotel and drinks which they deliver to you. We checked out the newer beach access which had a chair surcharge. I preferred the other beach access. The staff work long hours and very hard . I was very impressed."

"The hotel was amazing - beautiful and well appointed rooms, delicious food and excellent kids club. Located just by a beautiful beach and bay, it was a really easy and relaxed half-term holiday. There was no hassle organising anything (kids club/ food reservations) and the staff really went out of their way to ensure we were happy. We had some problems with our flights and the reception team and management went out of their way to help us, which was so appreciated. My children have a few allergies inc gluten. The head of hospitality and catering gave us his personal WhatsApp, to assist us during our stay in terms of dining - altering many dishes to expand our options. It just removed the anxiety of eating as we felt fully confident it was taken care of. The kids club is excellently run - the children really enjoyed it and they came out beaming with their arms full of crafts. Afterwards the kids would all jump in the pool with the friends they made from the club. The kids evening movie nights were a great idea so we could enjoy a couples supper too. Thank you!"

"Domes Zeen Chania belongs to the renowned Luxury Collection, a name that naturally raises expectations. While the property has undeniable charm and potential, the overall experience only partially meets the high standards typically associated with the brand. The setting is truly stunning — a lush, tropical oasis unlike anything else in the Chania area. At times, I found myself strolling the grounds simply to admire the incredible greenery and thoughtfully landscaped details. The resort was originally built for Casa Cook, a chain known for its adult-only concept, and one can still sense that romantic, boutique spirit in the design. It’s a pity that Domes Zeen has embraced a family-friendly approach instead, as the serene atmosphere would lend itself far better to a tranquil couples’ retreat. My room was spotless, beautifully designed, and impressively maintained thanks to excellent housekeeping. However, noise was a constant issue. Sounds from the pathways, nearby guests, and even conversations through the bathroom walls or from the room above were clearly audible, which diminished the sense of privacy and relaxation expected in a property of this level. Breakfast was another disappointment. The main buffet felt chaotic, overcrowded, and more like a canteen than a luxury resort experience. On several occasions, plates or food items ran out, requiring a wait. Fortunately, the staff kindly offered the option to have breakfast at the à la carte restaurant, which completely changed the tone of the mornings — calm, refined, and genuinely enjoyable. The pool area suffered from the same lack of serenity. With many young children around, the atmosphere was loud and far from relaxing; AirPods were essential to block out the constant noise. Towels were sometimes unavailable, and guests were expected to collect them themselves, as well as water — a level of service not in line with luxury standards. The beach area also felt insufficient for the resort’s capacity. During my three-day stay, all sunbeds were occupied each day, leaving little space to unwind. Extending the area or creating additional seating integrated into the lush landscaping could significantly improve this. At times, used towels, cups, and plates were left unattended until evening, which further detracted from the otherwise beautiful surroundings. It’s genuinely disappointing to write these criticisms because Domes Zeen has immense potential. The natural beauty, design, and setting are extraordinary, but with a few adjustments in service and management, the experience could truly reach the flawless level worthy of The Luxury Collection name"

"No doubt, this is a beautiful hotel. The design and landscaping are very well done. Our room was beautiful and had a large outdoor patio with a great view. We thought the location was perfect - a little private yet not too far from Chania (which was one of our favorite cities in Greece). As other reviews have mentioned - there were a lot of young kids - a lot! It kept us from hanging out near the pool/ facilities. For that reason alone, I wouldn’t stay there again but that’s no fault of the lovely hotel."
