PB hotel design editorial

Low-slung pavilions stepping down toward the Cretan coastline west of Chania, their raw concrete soffits and timber-screen facades dissolving into the scrub and hillside behind — this is the architectural grammar that gives Domes Zeen Chania its particular character. The resort, which opened in 2021 as part of the Domes Resorts collection, arranges its villas and suites across a terraced landscape where drought-resistant planting and exposed local stonework push back against any suggestion of manicured resort uniformity. The pool terrace, framed by wooden pergola structures and lined with straw-thatched parasols, draws a clear line between the Aegean vernacular and a cooler, more international minimalism — palm canopies against flat concrete rooflines, the combination feeling more North African than conventionally Greek. Inside, the rooms carry a material seriousness that distinguishes them from the whitewash-and-blue-tile shorthand of much Aegean hospitality design. Polished stone floors the colour of dry earth, microcement ceilings, walnut joinery built into woven-grass wall panels, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Sea of Crete like a held breath — the effect is closer to a considered private house than a resort room. Tribal ceramic objects sit on open walnut shelving alongside sculptural vessels, adding a curatorial warmth to interiors that might otherwise tip toward austerity. The restaurant continues the palette — burgundy velvet chairs against timber-slatted screens and brick-toned floors — keeping the whole property in deliberate, unhurried conversation with its landscape.

"Amazing experience at an amazing hotel! We spent 7 nights and loved every minute of our stay. The rooms were comfortable and well appointed. The staff was extremely attentive! They made every part of our stay memorable. They anticipated our needs and saw that we were well taken care of. We cannot wait to return next year. A true luxury experience in every way."

"We booked this hotel for our honeymoon stay in Chania and were informed less than 24 hours before check-in that the hotel canceled our reservation - something I didn’t even know was possible. What made the situation even worse was the way it was handled. When I explained this was part of our honeymoon and we only had one night in Chania, Maria responded with, “you only booked this one month ago,” which felt completely uncalled for, dismissive, and unprofessional. At no point during our communication did Maria show any empathy or accountability for the situation. Her responses were cold, defensive, and completely lacking in basic hospitality. This was shocking especially from a Marriott-affiliated property. We were offered an “upgraded” room at a clearly downgraded property, which completely missed the point. We then had to scramble to find new accommodations in a foreign country less than 24 hours before arrival and also extend our rental car because of the change. This situation disrupted part of our honeymoon, but the way we were spoken to made it far worse. What’s even more concerning is that, based on other reviews, we are clearly not the first guests this has happened to. I will be reaching out to Marriott corporate about this issue. If our call was on a recorded line, I encourage them to listen to it."

"What a lovely hotel, even better than the pictures I saw when booking, a lovely warm welcome with refreshments and explanation about the resort. All the rooms are individual and some come with their own pool, which my daughter had. Lovely and spacious and with lovely furniture. I have stayed at many hotels but this was one of the best for breakfast! Best start to the day All the staff were fantastic, from the reception, breakfast and lunch staff, all the beach staff and housekeeping - they couldn’t do enough for you. No problem too small and promptly dealt with. I couldn’t remember all the names but Theordore and Anastasia as well as Marianna at reception who checked us in - Amazing 👏🏽"

"We visited in Mid May when the weather was perfect for us, low to mid 20s. Overall this resort is fantastic, just a few minor considerations prevent us giving a 5 star review. It is suitable for all but there are plenty of families so something to consider if having lots of children around bothers you. Positives: The staff. All so warm, friendly and helpful from the lady who cleaned our room to the front desk, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The resort: Beautiful and immaculately maintained, the low rise setting in amongst gardens was amazing The room, great size, lovely The pool area: Large and beautiful pool if a little cold ! Comfy well spaced sun loungers, no reserving and always some available Food: We only had breakfast and a couple of lunches but the selection was good (one issue - see negatives). Surprisingly, most people seemed to eat in the resort restaurants (expensive) in the evening, we didn’t as the beautiful old town with so many beautiful restaurants and bars to choose from is close by Close to the old town: About a 30 minute easy walk away and a 12 Euro taxi ride back, there are also buses if you want ( a shuttle bus would really help the less mobile, especially in the summer heat when a walk may be less appealing) Negatives: Food: Breakfast hot selection is pre-cooked and varied in temperature from cold to luke warm, every day. Fresh-cooked and hot please ! Also, the snack menu stops at 6pm so only fine dining style food after that for room service, we weren’t feeling great one evening so something more simple would have been better Surrounding area: There is really nothing worthy of mention within a 10 minute walk in any direction. The resort sits between a construction site and barren land (ready for more construction?) and the area is quite run down with a lot of litter strewn around. There even seemed to be a few homeless people living in the bushes nearby who we passed every day when we walked into the old town, they were no problem though. Beach. The resort has a small beach area, part of a much larger beach, which is well kept and peaceful, the rest of the beach next to this isn’t very nice. The beach is shingle"

"The hotel has large rooms/suites set on a hill going down to the sea. Incredibly helpful staff, great food options and a long pool."
