PB hotel design editorial

Ierapetra sits on the southeastern tip of Crete, the southernmost city in Europe, where the Libyan Sea runs flat and copper at dusk and the light carries a quality closer to North Africa than to the Aegean. That geographic particularity — arid, ancient, unhurried — gave the designers of Numo Ierapetra Beach Resort the clearest possible brief: make something that belongs here rather than somewhere else. The low-slung whitewashed massing, punctuated by dark-framed glazing and bounded by dry-stone perimeter walls in local schist, anchors the resort to the Cretan landscape rather than imposing a generic Mediterranean grammar on it. The pool terrace, visible from above, arranges its timber-roofed bar pavilion, arched lounge structures, and rows of dark sunloungers around a large rectangular pool that terminates at the sea wall — olive trees lining the boundary between resort and shore. Inside, the interiors sustain the same discipline. Guest rooms are finished in raw plaster walls, limewashed in warm sand tones, with oak-slatted room dividers, woven-rattan pendant lights, and textural linen bedding that keeps the palette within a very narrow range of earth and stone. The restaurant works with a pitched timber ceiling, darkened exposed beams, rope-wound dining chairs, and pendant lights woven from seagrass or macramé — materials that echo the fishing-village craft traditions of the eastern Cretan coast. Nothing announces itself loudly, which is precisely the point.

"Stayed here for a week half board in May 2026. On our arrival at around 9.30 at night the welcome was standard meet and greet and we were shown to our room quite promptly after a welcome drink and being told you can find all the information needed about the site by scanning the QR code provided. Got connected to site WiFi and took it from there. Our room (3005) was a short walk from reception and was well appointed for wardrobe space, a mini bar with fridge as well as robes, slippers etc. Walk in shower and dual sinks - again pretty standard room facilities. No complimentary tea/coffee which we normally expect for this price range room/hotel. Room was serviced daily and very clean with bottled water supplied each day. One issue we only discovered on the second last afternoon while sitting outside was drain smell and discovered a man hole adjacent to the small patio area. Could be an issue as hotter weather prevails. No point asking for a move as only 2 nights to go. Found the breakfast restaurant Tamarisk in morning to be down by the pool and beach area. A nice e size of restaurant with plenty tables both inside and out. Choice in the restaurant is good with plenty of fresh and cooked food as well as coffee machines. Sometimes you are offered coffee at your table then the next day you need to get your own so not sure what the policy really was. Tables appeared to be cleaned as people left and never seemed rushed during our stay. The main pool area is quite nice and served by the pool Mare Mare bar. Sun beds are comfortable but the parasols are fixed and can't be moved. Wasn't really an issue as there was plenty of room between them but beds were quite stubborn to move. Towels were pretty much self serve from a small desk. Never saw a dedicated pool attendant or life guard the whole week. Service for drinks is old school - either go up to bar or wave at the staff. Think they might have been in process of upgrading to QR on the day we left which nowadays is pretty normal at 5 star. Despite when booking with our travel partner it was noted that the Menoa a la carte restaurant would be open from 20/4 we were told on day 2 that it would not be open during our stay and dinner would we served buffet style at Tamarisk. Dinner service from 7pm was okay but not outstanding. Food - options changed little over the week with some of the meat dishes suffering from the buffet style - pork dishes dry, chicken overcooked and also dry but lamb and oxtail dishes were very nice on ond evening. Veg and other options were fairly standard offerings. Drinks - water offered at table for €4/bottle and wine at varying prices. First night we asked for a sauvigon blanc at €33/bottle only to be told out of stock and offered alternative at €48. Start of a season and drinks on list out of stock wasnt a great sign. Went with the pricier bottle and told they could not keep the bottle if we didn't finish it for us but we were welcome to take it away to our room and another guest was also having the same conversation 🤷‍♂️ As week went we tried to order just glasses of house white or red at €9/glass and kept being pointed in direction of more expensive wines and the waitress never seemed all that interested in what we really wanted. Final straw was one evening when we had sat down and waited to be served drinks only to wait over 10 minutes before we finally called a supervisor over and things quickly changed. To be fair they offered the drinks complimentary on this occasion. Used the gym on 3 mornings and it is well equipped and kept. There is a PT on site who conducted classes but did not attend these. We found the Numo to be a little short on the level of service expected from a 5 star hotel. while some if the staff were really nice and friendly others appeared to be going through the motions."

"We had a wonderful stay at NUMO Ierapetra Beach Resort. Everything felt authentic, relaxed, and genuinely welcoming — 5-star quality without being overly formal or snobby. The check-in experience was excellent, including luggage service and very friendly staff throughout the hotel. We stayed in the King Evergreen Deluxe room, which had everything you would expect from a luxury hotel: comfortable, clean, and well-equipped with good-quality products. Housekeeping was done daily and always spotless. The only thing missing for a true luxury touch was a turndown service. The restaurant experience was another highlight. The entire team was warm and attentive, and a special mention goes to Lia from F&B, who had a great overview of everything and still took the time to chat with guests personally. The buffet offered a great variety of dishes and high-quality food choices every evening. The only small downside was the wine policy: when ordering a bottle of wine at dinner, unfinished bottles cannot be kept for the following evening and need to be taken back to your room instead. The beach area was also beautifully done, with cosy sunbeds and convenient drink service directly at the beach. Overall, a fantastic stay with genuine hospitality, excellent service, and a relaxed luxury atmosphere. We would happily return."

"If you are looking for a place where luxury meets genuine soul, NUMO Ierapetra Beach Resort is it. I can honestly say my stay was an 11/10 experience. From the moment I arrived until the second I left, I felt completely taken care of. The Heart of the Resort: The Staff The absolute highlight of this resort is the people. It’s rare to find a place where every single employee seems genuinely happy to be there. Warm Hospitality: Everyone greets you with a smile and a kind word. Whether you are walking through the gardens or heading to breakfast, the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming. The Lobby & Dining Teams: The staff in the lobby and the restaurants were exceptionally helpful. No request was too much, and their service was always prompt and professional. The Spa Team: A special shoutout to the spa staff. Their massages were heavenly and truly restorative. They went above and beyond to ensure I was comfortable and relaxed. World-Class Amenities NUMO offers everything you need for a perfect getaway without ever having to leave the grounds: The Pools: There are two beautiful pools to choose from. One features a fantastic pool bar, which became my favorite spot to unwind with a drink. Fitness & Fun: The gym is well-equipped for those who want to stay active, and the outdoor cinema is such a unique, magical touch for the evenings. Convenience: There is a lovely little boutique shop on-site for any essentials or gifts. Gastronomy The food was nothing short of amazing. Every meal was a highlight, featuring fresh ingredients and incredible flavors. It is clear that the kitchen takes immense pride in what they serve."
