PB hotel design editorial

Against the rust-red escarpment above Panormo on Crete's northern coast, a cascade of white cubic volumes steps down toward the sea in a formation that owes as much to the massing logic of a Minoan hillside settlement as it does to contemporary resort architecture. The Royal Senses Resort & Spa Crete, a Curio Collection by Hilton property, arranges its terraced wings so that each tier claims an unobstructed sightline over the Aegean, dry-stone retaining walls in local limestone anchoring the lower terraces and mature olive trees placed at intervals that soften the geometry without disguising it. The exterior palette — warm plaster, dark walnut timber brise-soleils, and the iron-grey of polished concrete — pulls the building into its volcanic landscape rather than setting it apart. Inside, the rooms shift register toward something quieter and more considered: linen-wrapped sliding panels in dark walnut frames partition the sleeping areas from the balcony in a gesture that carries a faint Japanese inflection, while built-in joinery in bleached oak and textured woven inserts keeps the material language grounded in the Mediterranean. The outdoor dining terrace deploys cast concrete water features flush with the floor plane, teak and woven-strap armchairs arranged around drum-base tables, a woven reed ceiling overhead diffusing the last of the evening light. At the main pool, sheer linen cabana curtains frame a long infinity-edge composition with palm silhouettes beyond — understated in ambition, precisely calibrated in execution.

"We stayed at Royal Senses in the autumn , almost just before they were closing down for the winter months. The resort is pretty, nice architecture and design throughout. The rooms are spacious, we had the one with the private pool which was pretty cool . Unfortunately the water was cold , so we could not swim there, but it was still a nice feeling to chill by it and drink something. The main pool is long and beautifully , it’s also easy to swim, but make sure to be early, before it’s full of people. There is a shuttle which runs quite often to the beach in their sister hotel. The beach is nice, it’s a small lagoon, there is a beach bar as well, where you can eat or drink. The food is very good at Royal Senses. The breakfasts are exquisite, there is everything you can wish for, including champagne and freshly squeezed juices. We usually do not like buffets, so we used their fine dining restaurant which was very good with gourmet food or if we were lazy we opted for room service which was fast and good too. Nothing to complain. The spa was good, however a bit difficult to book, especially if you wanted a couple massage at the same time. Therefore I would suggest to book even before you arrive here ( you can always cancel) , but like this you will have a guaranteed spot. I also did pedicure at their parlour which was good and I was pretty satisfied. The bar close to the reception is a nice spot for evening drinks, sometimes they have life music too. At the end of our stay , the receptionist treated us with small gifts ( olive oil and loukoumi) which was a nice gesture and a memory of Royal Senses. Wonderful to stay in Crete."

"We paid extra for a private pool, despite going in September it was absolutely freezing cold and we could not use it at all during our stay. Other guests were saying the same about their pools. We tried to resolve this during our stay and were told we could use the main pool (!) Or be given a token for the spa indoor pool - neither are suitable alternatives or resolve the fact we had paid for something we could not use. Raised a complaint with Jet2 after we returned and response was to the effect 'we dont advertise pools are heated so there has been no service failing' - incredibly dissapointing for our first experience with Jet2."

"We stayed a week at Hilton Royal Senses in late October and loved it. The location is stunning, and the staff were brilliant throughout. The food was excellent, especially with Christos (chef) helping my wife with her gluten and dairy allergies—he always made sure she had safe options and even prepared fresh dishes for her. The heated pool was great, though the indoor pool for kids is only open 8–10am, which was a bit limiting. The rooms were spacious and comfy, and the kids club staff were fantastic with our children. Drinks were pricey, but kids bringing water bottles was no problem, and free kids’ lunches helped a lot. A few small things could improve the stay: heated splash pools, longer indoor pool hours for children, and free soft drinks at dinner. Overall, a great holiday—we’d happily return!"
