PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the clifftop above Folegandros's western coast at a point where the island simply drops away into open Aegean, Gundari is less a building than a series of horizontal cuts into the hillside — terraced stone volumes that step down the escarpment in a rhythm that echoes the island's own dry-stone agricultural walls. The architecture, conceived by Athens-based studio Block722, treats the Cycladic vernacular not as surface ornament but as structural logic: rough-hewn local schist forms retaining walls and boundary screens, while cast concrete platforms cantilever outward over the cliff face, framing the water rather than merely facing it. Forty-two suites and villas are distributed across the site with enough separation to make each feel like a private compound. Inside, the interiors move in a palette drawn entirely from the landscape — travertine floors, lime-plastered walls in warm bone-white, raw timber headboards and turned-wood side tables sitting against the plaster without ceremony. Linen bed covers in dusty olive and deep khaki, brass drum occasional tables, and simple rattan-seated dining chairs keep the atmosphere closer to a well-edited private house than a resort. At the long infinity pool, which dissolves into the horizon at the precise moment the sun drops below it, teak-framed sun loungers flank a narrow stone monolith that functions as a windbreak — a detail that is, somehow, both purely functional and completely correct.

"Herb Moloney 3/5 Our room was not in front row. Instead we were in row set back with walkway in front. In addition to people and carts on walkway in front of our pool we had four pools that are attached by waterway that we could see from our pool. The other four rooms have barriers that are not a solid wall so we could hear them all like they were in our room. Would not recommend our room for price we paid. Trip typeVacation · Couple"

"my stay was enjoyable, and I would like to highlight that the rooms and accommodation were excellent. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, and the hotel itself is beautiful. I was very disappointed with my experience at this hotel. For a five-star property, I expected a much higher level of professionalism and service. The first thing that surprised me was seeing a receptionist wearing slippers and white socks while working at the front desk. This is the first time I have ever seen this in a five-star hotel, and it gave a poor first impression. Unfortunately, the restaurant service was also below expectations. The staff did not provide the level of attention and professionalism that you would expect from a luxury hotel, which made the dining experience disappointing."

"We had such a memorable experience from start to finish. The best view I’ve ever woken up to in all my travels—the uninterrupted view of the sea honestly feels like the most beautiful “TV” in the world. Everything about Gundari feels intentional. The interiors, the atmosphere, the way every detail flows together so effortlessly. The service is exceptional and really meets a high standard—the staff were very attentive. The restaurant is beautiful with high quality food, and I loved that there’s a small gym, yoga, and elegant spa—everything you need to feel good and reset. There’s a very particular energy to this place… it allows you to slow down, reconnect, and come back to what really matters."

"My 2nd visit was even better than the 1st. ...delicious breakfasts & dinners, completely chilled atmosphere that was complemented by the genuinely friendly & helpful staff. Sun lounges & personal pools in every room, what more do you need? Gym sessions each day in the spacious, air conditioned gym...the island of Folegandros is such a hidden treasure, as is Gundari. I returned home feeling relaxed and recharged. Thank you Gundari"

"I visited Gundari for the first time and can honestly say it is one of the most unique and breathtaking places I have ever stayed. Located above the Aegean Sea, the views are simply spectacular and create a real sense of peace and relaxation. Having our own private pool overlooking the sea was an unforgettable experience. Waking up to those views each morning and watching the incredible sunsets in the evening made the stay even more special. The breakfast was excellent, and every dinner we had at the restaurant was outstanding. The food was beautifully presented, full of flavour, and made with exceptional local ingredients. Dining while watching the sun set over the Aegean was a highlight of our stay. Located away from the main town, Gundari offers a level of privacy and exclusivity that is hard to find, making it the perfect place to disconnect and relax. Not to forget to mention that if you are lucky you can encounter some goats in the morning outside your room, which makes the experience even more unique. I would highly recommend staying for at least three nights to fully appreciate everything the property and the island have to offer. A truly special hotel with exceptional hospitality, stunning architecture, and an unforgettable setting. I wouldn’t hesitate to return."
