PB hotel design editorial

Dry-stacked schist masonry cascading down a hillside above Ios harbour gives Liostasi Hotel its defining architectural gesture — a building that seems less constructed than assembled from the island itself, tier upon tier of local stone retaining walls stepping toward the Aegean in a rhythm borrowed from the terraced agricultural landscapes that shaped the Cyclades long before tourism arrived. Thatched pergolas of dried reed crown the upper volumes, and arched openings cut through the stone at ground level introduce a softness that prevents the facade from feeling fortified. Yucca, olive, and drought-tolerant scrub planted throughout the terraces reinforce the impression that the complex has been growing here for decades. Inside, the design pivots sharply toward a monochrome Cycladic restraint — whitewashed walls, dark-framed steel casement windows, and bedding in crisp white linen, with teak side tables and woven side chairs adding just enough warmth to avoid severity. Artworks on the headboard walls, rendered in graphic black and white, evoke Aegean folk figures and give the rooms a collected rather than decorated quality. The pool terrace, where a tall red figurative sculpture commands the view across the bay toward the mountains beyond, frames the contrast the property is built around: ancient material language set against a self-consciously contemporary eye. The restaurant operates at dusk under a beamed pergola, barnacle-textured tree-trunk columns catching the candlelight while the pool glows beyond the open arches.

"We came to Ios just to see Homer's Tomb, but ended up LOVING Ios for its charming small town vibe. Everything is in walking distance from the hotel, and yet you feel tucked away. The staff at Liostasi were incredibly accommodating and attentive, and speak perfect English. We felt just like we were the only guests. The rooms were comfortable and well-appointed. The pool was perfect and unique, with the writings of Homer illuminated around the edge. Also, even though I am not always a fan of massages, this was THE BEST massage I have ever had at a hotel. The entire experience was lovely. We wish we could have stayed longer. *Have them arrange a tour of Ios. It is really fun to the see the island and meet the people, AND taste the cheese and honey at the cheese museum."

"Everything about this hotel is wonderful, the setting, the service, the breakfast all faultless. My only niggle is that our room was very small for the price we paid. I highly recommend this place and will return but next time I’ll book a larger room and won’t use booking. Com who charged me over the odds."

"We recently returned after spending 12 wonderful days at this hotel and on this beautiful island. Firstly, September is the perfect time to visit Ios as it is quiet and all the party people have departed leaving the lovely town and beaches quiet but still with a buzz. And the weather was wonderful - warm but with a breeze (a few days were very windy which affected ferries but not us on the island). To the hotel, we can speak highly enough of the hotel and the team. From the pick up from the ferry to there drop off, everything was wonderful and not too much trouble. We had a lovely ‘maisonette’ which was a little further away from the pool (a few steps!) and was quiet with lovely views. It meant we also had access to one of the pools which was quieter than the main pool. The room was spacious and really comfortable as well as being spotless and cleaned beautifully twice a day. The staff could not do enough for us - the front oof house team advised on places to go, where to eat, and took care of everything whilst we were there. And nothing was too much trouble. Unfortunately we forgot everyone’s name but the bar manager makes exceptional cocktails (ask him for his special fig negroni) and the waiting staff at dinner and breakfast were incredibly nice and helpful - had some lovely chats with the team. Have to mention breakfast - such a comprehensive buffet with different things everyday. Beautiful. Ate at the restaurant a few times and the tasting menu was fantastic as were the wine choices. The hotel is in a perfect location - midway to the port / beach and old town but does involve steps but both are only 10 mins away on foot. Thank you for a wonderful stay and we sincerely hope to come back, maybe in the spring. Jason & Kevin"

"Amazing hotel with the kindest staff that goes above and beyond to make you happy! Hotel is modern and beautifully decorated. We didn't get to use the pool as it was already chilly but the area looked amazing! The views from our terrace - to the port and the water - were incredible!!! Rooms on a smaller side, so if you like more spaciousness, choose a suite... otherwise and for 3 days we were there - it was totally worth it.. and we had an option to move to the suite (from our Junior suite), but we looked at it, and stayed with our smaller room, but amazing views!!! Highly recommend and would return in a heart beat when and if I'm back to Ios!"
