PB hotel design editorial

Cascading down a hillside above Ornos Bay in a choreography of whitewashed cubic volumes and dry-stone terrace walls, the architecture of Kalesma Mykonos draws directly from the agrarian building logic of the Cyclades — farmhouses, dovecotes, retaining walls — rather than the polished minimalism that dominates the island's newer hotel stock. Designed by Greek architect Vana Pernari and opened in 2021, the 26-villa property steps down the slope in tightly stacked rows, each unit angled to secure its own private plunge pool and unobstructed view toward the Aegean, the silhouette of Paros visible on clear afternoons. Inside, the interiors sustain the same disciplined restraint. Reed-and-timber ceilings — the kalamoti construction traditional to Greek island vernacular — span whitewashed rooms furnished in a palette of charcoal, warm linen, and undyed stone. Fluted blackened-wood headboards anchor the bedrooms, which open through steel-framed casement doors onto private terraces. The dining pavilion uses the same vocabulary in a more theatrical register: dark louvered screens pivot open to frame the courtyard, marble-topped tables ringed with black-lacquered rush-seated chairs beneath a reed canopy whose shadow geometry shifts with the afternoon light. The main infinity pool terrace is paved in honed limestone, teak sunloungers keeping the materiality grounded and warm against the deep blue of the Aegean beyond.

"I’m squarely in the category of travelers that plan their trips or visits around specific hotels / rooms, and Kalesma Mykonos was a rare instance where we had one more hotel to book on a planned Greece trip, and I happened upon this stunning property. Now having stayed there, I could have easily planned an entire vacation around this hotel as the highlight. It’s hard for a room to live up to or exceed the photos online but that was definitely the case here. We were upgraded to a one bedroom villa with plunge pool (from a sea view suite with plunge pool) and the room was absolutely stunning. It was one of those rooms where you feel bad leaving the hotel because you want to get every last minute you can enjoying the room itself. The owners spared no expense with the design of the room and property but it was also incredibly comfortable and practical. Tons of storage space and closet space (and a rare instance where you can fully unpack without asking for more hangers…!!), a Dyson hair dyer (which really distinguishes thoughtful luxury hotels for me these days), and easy engagement with hotel staff over WhatsApp. The plunge pools are picture perfect, and heated (!!) which makes a difference when the intense Mykonian winds roll through and create a chill despite the air temps. The staff were all lovely. Whether at the restaurants or on the concierge and housekeeping teams. Also, despite having a tight breakfast menu, the breakfast food was excellent. They also have a small gym in the basement. While I couldn’t find photos online, it’s more well-appointed than the website indicated. There is a bench and dumbbells, kettlebells, cardio machines, and a cable machine for folks that need to get a workout in. Overall I would highly recommend this property and hope to return for a longer stay next time we’re in Greece. My only point of feedback is that when we checked in, we had to wait ~3 hours for our room (we were quite early so it wasn’t expected), but when they walked us to our room they mentioned our upgrade as an afterthought. They should have mentioned they had upgraded our room at the outset to gain some free points of goodwill - and it was worth the wait!"

"Our stay at Kalesma Resort was nothing short of exceptional and exactly what we needed. As a busy professional couple looking for genuine rest and relaxation, while also celebrating both our wedding anniversary and my husband’s milestone 50th birthday, Kalesma exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely looked after by the wonderful team. Every member of staff, along with the owners themselves, struck that perfect balance of being attentive, thoughtful and genuinely caring, without ever feeling intrusive. Nothing was ever too much trouble. One particularly touching example was when they kindly arranged equipment for me to use in our suite so I could continue my daily bone-strengthening exercises during our stay. It was this level of personalised care that made the experience so special. The pride the owners and team take in their brand, their heritage and their vision is evident in every detail. The resort beautifully honours the meaning behind the Greek name “Kalesma”—an invitation or welcoming call—and that spirit of authentic hospitality is felt throughout the entire experience. The interiors are exquisitely designed, with a refined, high-end aesthetic that combines contemporary luxury with timeless Cycladic elegance. Every material, finish and furnishing has been thoughtfully selected, creating a polished yet deeply welcoming environment that feels both sophisticated and true to its Greek roots. The food was simply exquisite. Every meal was beautifully prepared, with generous portions, an excellent variety of options, and a willingness to accommodate individual preferences with warmth and flexibility. What particularly impressed us was the clear emphasis on wellness and healthy living throughout the menus. Nutritious, fresh and beautifully balanced dishes were abundant, allowing us to enjoy exceptional dining while maintaining our focus on health and wellbeing. Dining became one of the highlights of each day, combining indulgence with nourishment in a way that perfectly complemented the resort’s overall ethos of wellness and relaxation. The resort’s wellness offering is equally impressive. The 24-hour gym meant we could maintain our fitness routines whenever it suited us, while the spa services provided the perfect opportunity to fully unwind and indulge in some much-needed self-care. Combined with the serene surroundings, these facilities elevated the entire experience and contributed enormously to the sense of wellbeing we enjoyed throughout our stay. The setting itself is breathtaking. The views are stunning at every hour, creating a sense of tranquillity and beauty that is difficult to put into words. Unlike many parts of Mykonos known for their party atmosphere, Kalesma offers a true sanctuary. The entire resort exudes a feeling of calm, serenity and understated luxury. There were no rowdy crowds or raucous guests—just an atmosphere of peace, privacy and relaxation. What we found most remarkable was the sense of zen that permeates every aspect of the resort. Whether enjoying the spectacular views, relaxing in our accommodation, or spending time by the pool, we felt completely able to switch off and recharge. Having travelled around the island, we genuinely believe Kalesma deserves to be ranked the number one resort in Mykonos. Interestingly, even the local transfer drivers who transported us around the island independently shared this view, speaking highly of the resort’s reputation, quality and distinctive atmosphere. After experiencing it for ourselves, we can completely understand why it is held in such high regard. Kalesma provided the perfect backdrop for two very important celebrations in our lives and created memories that we will treasure forever. We left feeling rested, rejuvenated and incredibly grateful for the care and hospitality we received. For anyone seeking a luxurious, authentic and peaceful Mykonos experience away from the party scene, there is simply no better choice. We cannot recommend this beautiful resort highly enough and look forward to returning."
