PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a raw volcanic headland at Paralia Merchias, where Mykonian rock drops in jagged shelves directly into the Aegean, the architecture of Semeli Coast Mykonos works through a problem that most Cycladic resorts avoid entirely: how to build a village-scale compound on terrain that resists domestication. The answer, visible in the aerial view, is dispersal — white cubic volumes cascading down the promontory in stepped clusters, separated by dry-stone retaining walls built from the island's own dark schist, each unit claiming its own plunge pool and sightline to open water. The interiors navigate a similar tension between vernacular warmth and contemporary restraint. Whitewashed beam ceilings, a direct citation of traditional Mykonian farmhouse construction, run across rooms whose furnishings are otherwise emphatically spare — upholstered window benches in off-white linen, warm oak millwork with slatted cabinet fronts, pendant lights in woven rattan and hammered metal hanging asymmetrically beside concrete-plastered headboards. Dark slate-effect floor tiles anchor rooms that might otherwise feel too pale against the bleached landscape outside. At the pool bar, a steel-framed pergola structure with retractable timber louvres frames the social core of the property, rattan pendant clusters overhead and a stone-backed bar visible through open glazing — the effect closer to a considered private residence than a resort amenity, which is precisely the register this corner of Mykonos has always demanded.

"Our stay at Semeli Coast by Hilton in Mykonos was amazing. The hotel is beautiful with stunning views of the ocean, the rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the staff were super welcoming people and always accommodating with anything we needed during our stay. They made the entire experience effortless and memorable from start to finish. The pool, beach area, food, and breakfast were all excellent, and the atmosphere was the perfect mix of luxury and relaxation. The hotel is about a 20 minute drive from downtown Mykonos, and they made getting there extremely convenient by always helping arrange drivers for us. We loved visiting downtown Mykonos, but it was so nice coming back to a quieter and more relaxing place to stay afterward. We stayed at a few Hilton collection hotels throughout our past few trips to Greece and this hotel was by far one of the best. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Mykonos."

"Semeli Coast is not party Mykonos. It is restorative Mykonos. Quiet, spacious, beautifully positioned and genuinely relaxing, this is the kind of resort where you settle into a rhythm very quickly: sunrise, breakfast, beach, swim, jacuzzi, dinner, repeat. And honestly, that rhythm is hard to beat. The food is a major highlight. In my opinion, it is world-class, consistent and far better than you might expect from a resort where the setting alone could easily do the heavy lifting. The entire menu feels carefully designed by a chef who really understands Greek ingredients, balance and comfort. Standouts for us were the smoky eggplant dish, the Greek salad, the Ikaria salad, the steak and the Mykonian lamb, but the truth is, you would struggle to choose badly. I would strongly recommend treating yourself to half board. There is enough variety across the menu to keep things interesting, and dinner became one of the real pleasures of the stay. Breakfasts are also excellent. Fresh omelettes are cooked to order, alongside Greek cheeses, yoghurt, olives, breads, eggs, bacon and all the usual hotel breakfast staples. It feels generous without being chaotic. The drinks deserve a mention too. We loved the fresh-squeezed orange juice, and the cocktails were excellent — each one felt Greek in some way rather than generic resort-bar fare. They were distinctive, beautifully made and very easy to enjoy by the pool. The staff are exceptional. Others have said this, and it is true: they will do anything for you. Nothing is a problem. I will not overdo this section because, frankly, it will be obvious within the first day. The staff will take care of you. One of the hidden gems of the hotel is the spa. It is complimentary to use the heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room, cold plunge and fresh ice area, and for some reason it never seemed busy. The massages were incredible too, though of course those are extra. If you are visiting in shoulder season, the spa becomes even more valuable because the outdoor pools are still very cold. In early May, our private jacuzzi was brilliant, we used it twice a day, but the main pool was icy in Early May. The only heated pool is in the spa area. The gym is also very good for casual hotel fitness. It is fitted with Technogym equipment, dumbbells, yoga mats, two weight machines, an elliptical, treadmill and bike. We went first thing in the morning and had it to ourselves. The space can be opened up for fresh air, and we were even able to play our own music through the TVs, which made it feel very relaxed and private. The private beach is another overlooked highlight. I do not mean Merchia Beach, which is separate and public, I mean the resort’s own beach area beside the taverna. It is beautiful, quiet, genuinely private and has plenty of loungers and seating. Because many guests have private pools, it seemed surprisingly underused. We were often the only people down there. In early May, the sea was actually warmer than the pools. Sunbathe, swim, read, repeat — it was bliss. There are also lovely walks around the headland. If you leave the main entrance and turn right onto the dirt and gravel road, it becomes more of a trail, with beautiful views across the bay. There is no shelter or tree cover, so I would avoid doing it at midday, but it is well worth exploring. Sunrise is special here. In May it was around 6:15am, and watching the sun come straight out of the ocean was genuinely memorable — especially with Ikaria visible in the distance, tied to the mythology of Icarus flying too close to the sun. It gave the place a little extra magic. A small practical note: even at 19–22°C in early May, we caught the sun quickly. The light is strong, the loungers are beautiful, and it is very easy to underestimate how fast you will tan or burn. Overall, Semeli Coast is a superb resort for people who want calm, comfort, privacy, excellent food and a slower version of Mykonos. It is isolated, but in exactly the right way. This is not the Mykonos of beach clubs and late nights. This is the Mykonos of sea air, warm hospitality, excellent cooking, spa rituals, quiet coves and golden sunrises. For us, it was a restorative, luxurious and deeply relaxing stay — and the food alone would bring us back."

"From start to finish, our stay at Semeli Coast Mykonos was unforgettable. The wonderful touch of airport collection and return made our arrival and departure completely stress-free, and after a delayed flight we arrived at the property close to midnight to find the team waiting with warmth and even a freshly prepared meal. That moment alone showed the level of care and dedication this hotel offers. The setting is breathtaking, with a completely remarkable view of the coastline and a relaxed, calm aura that surrounds the entire property. The property itself is modern and newly constructed yet fits within the landscape in an un-obtrusive way. The spa and gym are fantastic — modern, beautifully maintained, and a perfect balance of energy and serenity. Most of all, it is the incredible team that elevates the experience: attentive, kind, and always going the extra mile to make guests feel at home in a relaxed yet formal manner. Semeli Coast is more than a hotel — it’s a place where hospitality, comfort, and beauty come together effortlessly. We leave with unforgettable memories and are already looking forward to our return."
