PB hotel design editorial

Where most Santorini hotels chase the caldera-edge drama of Oia's sugar-cube cliffs, Katikies Garden in Fira takes a different position — literally and philosophically. Set within a restored neoclassical mansion that predates the island's tourism era, the property draws its identity from an arcaded courtyard of considerable architectural ambition: whitewashed piers and rounded arches framing a fountain ringed in black-and-white geometric tile, tall queen palms rising through the open centre, globe pendant lights warming the stone at dusk. The massing, with its symmetrical fenestration and pronounced cornice lines finished in warm sand render, carries the feeling of a Cycladic interpretation of Spanish colonial architecture rather than the vernacular cave-house typology that defines the island's more photographed northern villages. Inside, the design deploys a palette of emerald velvet, blush pink, and dark-stained oak boarding that runs against Santorini's default whitewashed restraint. Barrel-vaulted ceilings preserved in several suites give the rooms their most compelling spatial dimension, the whitened plaster curving down to meet wide-plank floors and floral bedcovers. The restaurant keeps its original terrazzo floors intact, dressing them with Beetle-style armchairs in dusty rose and teal velvet, pink-lacquered display cabinets, and clusters of globe and brass pendant lights — a scheme with clear debts to contemporary Milan. The infinity pool, cantilevered toward the caldera with teak-framed daybeds and reed plantings screening the terrace edges, offers the volcanic arc of Akrotiri in uninterrupted relief.

"I would like to express my deep dissatisfaction regarding the service we received from your reception staff today. Yesterday, we asked the hotel to book a taxi for us for 9:15 AM. This morning, the taxi did not arrive on time, and we ended up waiting approximately 30 minutes. During this entire time, I repeatedly contacted the reception desk asking for assistance and updates. Unfortunately, the receptionist was completely unhelpful. He continuously told us to “wait five more minutes,” despite apparently already knowing that the taxi had actually been scheduled by the hotel for a different time. In other words, the taxi driver was not late — the hotel itself provided the wrong pickup time. What is even more frustrating is that instead of communicating honestly and professionally with us, the receptionist kept giving misleading information and showed no real effort to help or solve the situation. I even went personally to the reception desk, but the attitude remained indifferent and dismissive. This was extremely disrespectful and completely unacceptable for a hotel that claims to provide quality hospitality. This incident seriously damaged our experience at your hotel. I truly enjoyed Santorini and would love to return to the island in the future, but after this experience, I would never choose to stay at your hotel again. I also intend to share this experience in my Google review and on my social media platforms, because I believe other guests should be aware of the level of service we received. I hope management takes this complaint seriously and addresses the behavior and professionalism of the reception staff to prevent future guests from going through the same experience."

"I had booked a massage with the reception fully written and confirmed and the next day the reception never informed the spa and there was no appointment left for my husband and I. I was only here for one day and highly disappointed that the reception couldn’t have the decency to make the appointment properly for me."

"A lovely hotel, but not for the faint-hearted or mobility challenged! A great location, within walking distance of restaurants etc. Everywhere in Fira is up or down hills or stairs, with limited handrails!"

"This is a very unique hotel located right in the middle of all action but is surprisingly quiet and probably one of the nicest hotels in that area. It just feels like staying in a monastery but with luxurious amenities, good food and good service. Everyone in the staff were great. The guy who checked me in was really nice and made an extra effort along with his manager to get me an upgraded suite. I would have easily lived with the suite that I had booked but they both made an extra effort to get me an even nicer suite. I had similar good experience with room service staff, housekeeping staff and bell staff. The bell staff who carried the luggage all the way to the end of the road for taxi pick up deserves special recognition for his hard work. Overall, a very good hotel especially if you are looking for a nice stay in Fira. Most nicer hotels are in Oia leaving not many good options in Fira but this one fills the gap perfectly."
