PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the volcanic caldera edge of Oia, where whitewashed cave dwellings have clung to the cliffside for centuries, Katikies Santorini translates the vernacular architecture of the Cyclades into something closer to a private compound than a conventional hotel. The property's roughly twenty suites and cave rooms cascade down the cliff face in a sequence of domed ceilings, barrel vaults, and sculpted plaster terraces — forms drawn directly from the island's pre-tourist building tradition, where the volcanic tufa was hollowed out rather than built upon. That structural logic, working with the rock rather than against it, gives each room a singular geometry: the barrel-vaulted suites visible in the images show smooth lime-plastered ceilings tapering over beds dressed in white linen with cobalt blue runners, paired with deep-blue upholstered armchairs and dark stone tile floors, the caldera framed through narrow French doors as though composed deliberately. The interiors maintain a disciplined palette — white on white, broken only by those Aegean-blue accents and occasional warm timber flooring in the arched-window rooms — that keeps the architecture legible rather than decorating over it. The cliffside infinity pool, set at the property's lower terrace, edges directly against open sky and the caldera drop, its geometry echoing the carved terraces above. At the outdoor dining terrace, white linen curtains hang from a pergola structure, the setting dressed with deep banquettes, patterned monochrome cushions, and red glassware that catches the last light over Nea Kameni.

"Everything was good up until we realized we couldn't fly out of santorini with 5 check in suitcases. We explained our situation to the concierge and they offered to ship our extra suitcase back to our home in the states. It sounded very easy so we have them our American Express for the charges and we waited and waited nothing! We called only to hear that they handed it off to some 3rd party to ship to us. This wasn't our agreement and they call it a 5 start resort? Sorry, but we stay in five star hotels everywhere we go and we have never had this happen before. In fact during this trip we shipped boxes home from Mykonos Greece, Nice France, Paris France and London UK and everybody came through for us except for the Katakies hotel in Oia! We are so disappointed in them that we cannot recommend them to anyone! Beware they don't do what they say!"

"After spending around 1000 EUR a night assuming it would be the perfect honey moon in a 5 star luxury hotel what a complete lie! Pictures are systematically positioned to mislead and con tourists. The room is actually one you would get in a 3 star hotel. How an earth this hotel has gotten away with floggin this dead horse and ripping people off pretending to be a 5 star is beyond me. The reality is greece authorities probably dont even care? just milk the tourists for whatever you can thats just the way it goes around here. The windows are the ones you get in a prison, small and unable to see much, had they of not been there it would of made no difference. Then the bathroom ceiling height is 6ft, and if your 6ft like me your gonna bang your head washing your face. Obviously we told the hotel straight away this is a joke we do not want this room refund us the money. Then usual con tactics to do whatever it takes to not give your money back. 1st theyll try and show you alternatives and make out like your so lucky your getting an upgrade when in reality its a similar crappy room. 2nd they'll look for trying introduce technicallities in in your booking process which means they cant refund. Thirdly they'll delay your complaint hoping you get fed up, Fourthly theyll put you infront of a manager that apparantly has no power to do anything and finally theyll say that the head office in in athens it has no direct number and get you to send an email to someone that doesnt exist banking on the fact that your a tourist and you havent got time to hang around so theyll waste your whole trip. A question for tripadvisor do you check these hotels are actually 5 star, if so i would love to see the proof? To summarise this is what we call in the UK "daylight robbery" we still havent recieved a refund it and its been a year and a half. We lost 4000 EUR and we paid out of our own pocket again to stay at an actual 5 star hotel. Lastly for those couples looking at the pictures of the view of the sea, please be aware that view is available widely across santorini dont buy into the hype. THIS IS A 3 STAR HOTEL! IT SHOULD BE 100 EUR A NIGHT NOT 1000 EUR HOLD ONTO YOUR MONEY, DO NOT COME HERE EXPECTING 5 STAR IT IS NOT!"

"I was really looking forward to staying at this property as my research had indicated it is one of the best hotels in Oia. We found the hotel location to be excellent and it is, I believe, the only hotel with an elevator to assist guests from going up and down. From the main pool and dining area to the top is 120 steps and in the middle of these steps are various rooms and suites. Note that none of the rooms are directly accessible with the elevator. Elevator will get you close, but climbing steps is always necessary. Knowing that the hotel and the rooms are carved into the caldera, none of the rooms are the same. There is no consistency and that maybe part of the charm for some people, but not us! Breakfast is served at the lowest level and the food and service are good. Staff is accommodating and helpful, but the service is not genuine and warm. We choose and pay top dollar for our accommodations, but what lasts other than the view or the room, is how the staff makes you feel. Feeling is what stays with you, and regrettably the feeling we got will not bring us back."

"The hotel facility is very clean and accommodating they handle your baggage. The room had the most amazing views with the balcony and hot Tub the morning breakfast was great. You could truly just stay there and relax and not have to leave the hotel but there was too much to seebut we could come back and just stay there and not leave for a week"

"My partner and I spent three unforgettable nights at this breathtaking property at the end of September - truly one of the most gorgeous places with the best Caldera view one could dream of. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly received and delighted to learn we’d been upgraded to Room 5, which, in my opinion, has the most stunning view of all. Every member of the Katikies team was exceptional; warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making our stay special. The reception team was welcoming and ever-helpful with recommendations for activities and places to explore. A special thanks to the strong young gentleman who kindly carried our heavy luggage up and down those steep stairs — much appreciated! I had expected the rooms to be quite compact, but ours was surprisingly spacious, beautifully designed, and very comfortable. If I were to suggest one small improvement, it would be to make the pillows just a touch softer. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the delicious breakfasts we eagerly looked forward to each morning. And of course, the picturesque infinity main pool deserves a mention — an absolute dream, with the endless blue sea as its stunning backdrop. Katikies is worth every penny, and I can’t wait to return someday."
