PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the caldera cliff at Imerovigli, one of Santorini's highest inhabited points, the cascade of whitewashed volumes that houses Kivotos Santorini appears from a distance to be indistinguishable from the Cycladic vernacular architecture surrounding it — cube forms stepping down the volcanic rock face, blue-tiled pools catching the Aegean light. The tension the property navigates with real sophistication lies inside, where that whitewashed exterior gives way to interiors of sculptural grey plaster, vaulted ceilings carved and folded into organic arches that owe more to cave architecture than to the blue-and-white postcard grammar expected of the island. The rooms push this further than most Santorini properties dare. Polished concrete floors in cool grey tones run beneath swooping plaster vaults — surfaces that have been shaped rather than simply built, their edges catching recessed light in ways that animate the geometry through the day. Darker guest suites take a more contemporary line, with charcoal-framed casement windows opening directly onto private terraces and infinity pools, the caldera framed as precisely as a painting. The main terrace restaurant sets round tables in woven-cord chairs behind full-height glass balustrades, the volcanic island of Nea Kameni anchoring the middle distance. At pool level, dark volcanic stone surrounds an infinity edge that mirrors the sky rather than the traditional turquoise, anchoring the property's chromatic argument: that Santorini's drama is better served by restraint than by colour.

About

Kivotos Santorini is ideally located in Imerovigli, the most private area of Santorini. On an island bustling with visitors for many months of the year, Imerovilgi is definitely the quietest, most intimate district on the island with only a few hotels and a couple of gourmet restaurants to shatter the ambience. Unlike many of the properties on the island there is no climbing down involved in accessing the hotel. You can drive straight to a waiting parking space in front of the entrance to the first building with a mere twenty steps leading down to the second. Now, just close your eyes for a moment and prepare yourself for the view of a lifetime, 180 degrees worth of pure majesty, across the entire bay and caldera. You are drawn first to the remains of the ancient acropolis of Santorini, called Skaros, perched on a single defiant turret of rock in the sea. Cast your gaze wider to take in the magnificent sunset and world famous volcano of Santorini. Even more unique is the extra romantic touch not found in other luxury accommodation on Santorini; not only do all the bedrooms look out onto this view but so confident are we of its supremacy that the windows are specially curved so whatever the time of year you stay the last rays of day will stream directly in onto your bed! So, from the view to the hotel itself: Nine Suites and One Villa with indoor or outdoor pools and Jacuzzi, a Hammam, en-suite treatment rooms and other unique five star elements are offered which in combination with the hotel’s gourmet restaurant and skybar are here to further enhance your accommodation experience.

"We just got back from three nights at Kivotos and honestly it was the highlight of our whole trip to Santorini. The location in Imerovigli is unbeatable. You get the caldera, the sea, and those sunsets right in front of you every evening, and we never got tired of it. We'd just sit on the terrace and watch. Our suite was incredible. Gorgeous shower, a big bathtub we actually used, and a private terrace with a jacuzzi and sun loungers where we ended up spending most of our downtime. Nice extras too, like an iPad, a speaker, and mood lighting that made the evenings feel really romantic. The staff are what took it from great to unforgettable. They genuinely wanted to help with everything. They gave us a hand with the rental car, did breakfast either on the restaurant terrace with the view or in our room and on the terrace when we felt lazy, sorted out our sunset cruise and dinner reservations, told us about the beach club, and gave us great local tips. The thing that really got us: they surprised us with balloons and wine in the room for a birthday we never even told them about. No idea how they knew, but it meant a lot. We'll definitely be back, and we're recommending it to everyone. Thank you for an amazing few days."

"The most beautiful hotel, we stayed in the cave suite and it was amazing. Beautiful little touches to make you feel extra special, wine on arrival a fruit platter and sweet treats. The staff are amazing and go the extra mile with their service. The restaurant food is amazing. Highly recommend this luxury stay and a bonus not to many stairs"

"From the moment we arrived we were welcomed in the most impeccable way, with genuine warmth and thoughtfulness that knows no schedule. The suite is an intimate refuge with an enormous shower like a private grotto, where you lose all sense of time. In the morning they bring creamy scrambled eggs, semolina bread and Greek coffee — enjoyed in bed or on the terrace, with 180 degrees of caldera before your eyes. Spectacular sunsets with no need to crowd into Oia. Staff always available, breathtaking view, unique atmosphere. It is not a hotel: it is a memory to build on the edge of a volcano. Highly recommended."
