PB hotel design editorial

Carved directly into the volcanic caldera cliff face at the northern tip of Oia, the property that became Mystique Hotel required its architects to treat the island's ancient cave-dwelling tradition not as aesthetic reference but as structural logic. The whitewashed forms cascade down the basalt rock in a sequence of vaulted suites, terraces, and curved retaining walls that appear — from the aerial view — to have grown organically from the pumice rather than been built upon it. Across its 40 suites and villas, the architecture works entirely within the Cycladic vocabulary: barrel-vaulted ceilings, thick render absorbing and radiating heat, arched doorways connecting cave-like chambers, and an elliptical infinity pool whose rim dissolves into the Aegean far below. The interiors sustain this restraint with genuine discipline. Walls, floors, and ceilings in each room share the same chalky white — broken only by raw driftwood headboards, rough-hewn timber bedside tables, and striped linen cushions in warm grey. Paired wall lamps flank the beds in a quietly symmetrical arrangement, while full-height panelled shutters fold back to frame the caldera view as a living picture. On the restaurant terrace, teak-topped tables and white powder-coated chairs line up against the cliff edge, the bar set into a niche of sculpted render behind them. The effect across every level is one of deliberate subtraction — colour, ornament, and material weight progressively removed until what remains is light, volcanic stone, and the deep blue of the caldera.

"It’s a beautiful hotel with stupendous views that cannot be beaten. We expected the steps to rooms to be steep/uneven and enjoyed the workout but we are fit 60+ yr olds. They will have you sign a waiver for this. If you aren’t mobile or have issues with walking/knees/mobility, it’s not for you. We had some plumbing issues the first night which the hotel addressed. We need to remember that the whole island has plumbing issues and is not like the plumbing you have back home in the USA or UK. I would’ve taken a point off for this as it really upset my night to have issues with getting clean/being cold the first night but maintenance and management tried very hard to fix what they could. Next morning the water was fine/hot and the service is excellent with friendly faces and a yearning to please. The main pool is not heated during off season so it was very cold but we enjoyed meeting people by the bar pool. I loved the food. The proximity/walk into town was great with lots of tourist shops."

"Our experience at Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Santorini was nothing short of exceptional. The property perfectly captures the island’s beauty — elegant, serene, and with stunning caldera views from every corner. The staff were incredibly attentive and genuinely kind, always ready to help with anything we needed. Every moment felt special, from the beautifully presented breakfast to the relaxing infinity pool. Mystique truly embodies luxury and hospitality at its finest — an unforgettable stay we’d recommend to anyone visiting Santorini."

"The worse experience I’ve ever encountered. This place is unsafe, outdated, the room was musty and the rooms are not worth the price. There are plenty of other nice hotels near this hotel that are 1/3 of the price they’re charging."

"This hotel looks lovely at first but we wouldn’t stay there again. Our room was nice but the so called sea view was way in the distance past a dilapidated parking lot. Breakfast served in our room was cold and our packed breakfast for our last morning with an early ferry departure was a disgrace. Plain bread, yoghurt and a pear. The waiter in the restaurant was helpful, Stefanos. Location also not great although they did provide a shuttle bus. Not our best experience for the high price."
