PB hotel design editorial

Spread low across the volcanic plateau of Mesaria, away from Santorini's postcard-saturated caldera edge, the architecture of NOŪS Santorini makes a quiet argument for restraint. Divercity Architects and MPLUSM Architects shaped the 2022 project as a combination of renovation and new-build extension for Yes! Hotels, producing 121 rooms and suites whose white rendered volumes step and fold across the site in clear dialogue with Cycladic vernacular — angled rooflines creating a rippling silhouette when viewed from the pool deck that feels like an abstraction of the island's own geological strata. That centrepiece pool stretches to 1,000 square metres, its horizon dissolving into the Aegean below. Inside, the material palette does the heavy lifting. Terrazzo floors in pale aggregate anchor the rooms, warmed by substantial oak joinery — headboards, bench frames, and console tables hewn from timber with visible grain and heft, set against limewashed white walls. Bespoke mosaics surface elsewhere, their dark volcanic texture referencing the island's pumice and lava fields. Lighting by Eleftheria Deko & Associates keeps everything low and golden, while the landscape, designed by Doxiadis+, layers oleander, agave, and date palms around the pool and a sculptural installation of mosaic-clad forms that punctuate the gardens. The dining terrace, angled to face the sunset directly, distills the whole proposition: architecture and landscape working together to frame what Santorini has always been about, without shouting about it.

"Noūs Santorini is a stunning resort, and we were eager to give it a perfect score. However, there were a few minor issues that prevented us from doing so. The reception was fantastic, and they even offered WhatsApp requests for any special requests. We booked through AMEX FHR and were pleasantly surprised by the room upgrade and the resort credit that came with it. The food for lunch and dinner was impeccable, but the breakfast was just okay. It was buffet-style, but it lacked the fresh hot options we’ve experienced at other five-star hotels in Greece. The real reason we’re rating it four stars is the cleaning crew. We had two people in our room, but they only replaced one large towel each time they came, even when we had two on the ground. We had to text and ask for another towel. They also entered the room towards the end of the day to provide extra water and other amenities, but they would turn off all the lights and close the curtains, leaving us in a pitch-black room when we returned to the hotel at night. The exterior deck and private pool had lights, so even if they left the curtains open, the room would still be illuminated. This decision baffled us. Lastly, showering during the day provided hot water, but we often returned at night after being out all day and found the water lukewarm. We suspect that the water heating systems are solar, but this was a bit frustrating since the shower is open, and without hot water, it would quickly become cold. Despite these minor issues, we had a great time during our stay. With a few tweaks, this place would easily be a five-star resort."

"Location of the hotel is good, however the service needs significant improvement. Booked through Amex platinum, it’s part of their FHR collection, which typically ensures a level of service and quality that hotels typically meet. However this was not the case here. Service was lacking, room missing water and tea/coffee upon arrival, only the coffee machine was there. No evening turndown service. Daily housekeeping service didn’t replenish items. When asked for water bottles, no one showed up for 20 mins. Breakfast has no live counters for omelette or anything. Just minor issues that reflect the overall service quality. Nothing glaring."

"The best 5-star resort in Santorini. They upgraded us to private pool suite with Amex Fine hotel benefits. The pool is perfect size with warm water made our stay fabulous. This staffs in hotel are all friendly and the room is spotless clean. The bed super comfy. Variety breakfast is a bonus. Dinner is also delicious. Location is very convenient and only 2 min walk to bus stop to Fira. Only 5 min to airport. Definitely come back and strongly recommend."

"There's a lot to love about this hotel. I would likely stay here again for a night or two if I'm back in Santorini and most likely I will return to Santorini since I only got one day in Santorini. First the hotel is very modern and if you love modern design, you will love it. My husband totally loved it, but I thought it was too modern. Rooms beautiful and the pool area is well appointed with a table and chairs as well as two very comfortable loungers. It was late Sept so it was chilly to use the pool. The hotel is quite large and there's a lot of ground to cover if the suite is far from the main area. The main pool is large and gorgeous. There's not that much of a view and that's regretful. My hotel suite was the corner suite with a view of a parking lot to the right. Thankfully, it wasn't a busy parking lot. If I were to have stayed there for a few days, I would definitely have asked for a different room. The bed was very comfortable and I think it was California king size. We slept very well. The highlights of the hotel were the breakfast buffet, ample pool area and the hotel restaurant. The breakfast buffet was quite expansive and if you are a breakfast person, you would love it. However, there's no made to order station. The food at the restaurant was very good and innovative. We would have ordered more but the waiter said the portions were big but obviously he has not seen portion sizes in the US. Definitely take advantage of the restaurant if you can. The miss was the spa. I had high expectations based on the look of the hotel, but it's not like a typical high end luxury resort spa. A tiny locker room, no hair dryer nor amenities, one shower, no robe, no jacuzzi, and the saunas are co-ed. I didn't book a massage because I just didn't have the time, but based on the facility, I'm glad that I didn't get one. It would be a great resort to spend a full day in if it wasn't for the mediocre spa experience. I have to say though the hot and steam saunas are pretty hot and very clean. I chose this hotel because it is so close to the airport, but the trip far was still 40 euros despite the fact that the trip was little over than 5 mins. You can pay exorbitant cab fare to go everywhere, but there's a bus stop to Fira which is not far from the hotel. The only negative is that the road is very busy and there's not much of a sidewalk. We did take a bus to Fira and back and we managed it just fine. Just note that the bus sign to Fira is a paper that's stapled onto a tree trunk right front of the laundromat next to Carrefour. The bus fare is 2 euros/pp so even though we could afford the cab, 80 euros on RT cab ride seemed too much considering Fira was less than 10 minutes away. The bus also seemed to be filled with tourists too. I liked that there were local supermarkets right by the hotel and restaurants and shops for locals. So if you want to be away from busy tourist areas, looking for great service and comfortable stay, this hotel would be a great option."
