PB hotel design editorial

Carved directly into the volcanic caldera cliff at Imerovigli — the highest point on Santorini's rim, known locally as the balcony of the Aegean — On The Rocks is one of the few properties on the island where the architecture feels genuinely determined by geology rather than merely inspired by it. The building cascades down the cliff face in a sequence of whitewashed terraces, domed cave rooms, and private plunge pools, the whole composition stepping toward the caldera in a rhythm that echoes the Cycladic vernacular without reproducing it as pastiche. The volcanic basalt of the cliff breaks through interior walls visibly, treated not as something to be concealed behind plaster but as a design element in its own right — raw grey stone left exposed alongside a bed frame, or rising behind a sofa, insisting on the geological drama beneath every room. The interiors pursue a deliberately restrained palette: white lime-rendered barrel-vault ceilings, polished concrete floors, and furniture finished in charcoal-stained oak and matte black steel. Bathrooms carry the same logic, with rough-hewn stone counters and open-plan layouts that dissolve the boundary between sleeping and bathing. The cliff-edge restaurant terrace, sheltered beneath a whitewashed pergola strung with filament bulbs, frames the submerged caldera and Nea Kameni island in a view that shifts from hard blue to amber at sunset. At night, the tiered massing glows warmly against a deep Aegean sky, the lit pool below reflecting arched stonework in turquoise.

"BEWARE!!! Everything was great until my CLOTHING WENT MISSING!!!! Update Nov 12 2025: Despite hotel management's apologetic nature and hinting towards possible compensation when I checked out (in an effort to get me to delete or change my review), hotel management refused to provide any compensation when I followed up with them by email after. In the hotel's reply to me, management informed me that they contacted Google to remove my review. For some reason Google told them my review had been removed, even though it clearly was not. It was evident that any desire to help me stemmed from the hotel wanting my review removed. I have never had such misfortune to happen upon such poor service in my life before, much less from a 4-star hotel. I stand behind my statement that I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. And I stand behind what I wrote in my Oct 2025 review, which is factual and represents my experience in dealing with this hotel. Early Oct 2025 review on Google: The lady at the reception desk (who I learned was the manager) was rude and defensive about it right from the start. She was not empathetic at all!!! She kept pointing at the cleaning lady saying “she wouldn’t fit in your clothing” as a defence, and her actions and body language with how she handled our belongings roughly with less care left me with the impression she was being extremely incompassionate about the situation or my feelings. I knew exactly where the clothing should have been and there was no evidence of forced entry, so the logical conclusion was that someone had taken it. She looked through the laundry room but did not find anything. There are also no security cameras in the public areas of the hotel. She informed me that the standard process was to call the police. After the police came, they told me I had to go to the police office in Fira to file a report (45 min walk away). When I got there, they told me that filing a “stolen item” police report costs 100 euros and it sounded like it was a lengthy process involving lawyers. Neither the hotel staff nor the police informed me of the cost or the process until after I went to the police station by myself. This ordeal wasted the majority of my day and left me with a poor impression of the hotel and how it is reflected through its staff and management. Furthermore, when I returned to the hotel that evening, there was no follow up or any notes or messages for me. I had to request to speak with management again. And, one of the first things that was brought up to me the following morning was regarding my review. Hotel management was understandably upset about the review and wanted to make things right. They requested I send them an email explaining the details of the situation. Upon reading the reviews of this hotel, it appeared that there have been instances of theft as recently as one year ago. When I brought it up to management, it was explained that the guests had taken their clothing to an independent laundry service which had misplaced their clothing, and the guests never updated their review. But— I also did not see any replies from hotel management clarifying the situation or stating that this was the reason for the missing clothing. I would not recommend this hotel and will be calling my credit card company when I go back to my home country as well as the travel agency to complain."

"We stayed our last night in Santorini at On The Rocks. The room had a loft bedroom with a window view of the Aegean Sea. The cave pool was fun, and Linda had a facial that she described as the best she’s ever had. The staff was fantastic and accommodating. We had a 3:30 ferry to Crete and they allowed a late checkout and arranged for a taxi to the port. Expect to climb stairs and hills when visiting. Beautiful views and very relaxing."

"BREATHTAKING VIEWS, Perfect location near Fira and all shops, great staff! I wasn’t sure before booking because it wasn’t directly in Fira but upon arriving I was completely sold! The hotel is perched directly in front of the sea so our view each morning was absolutely stunning! We rewuested the caldera honeymoon suite but I think our room was much bigger thanks to the hotel - we had a separate bedroom, living room, kitchen area and our hot tub inside had a direct view of the Aegean Sea. It’s located in Imerovigli- which is just 5-10 minutes max from Fira but still has the same oceanic view!"

"One of the most stunning places to wake up to in the morning as you open your door and the staff are there with your breakfast. Very clean .all the staff are very respectful and polite. A special thanks to the staff that made the amazing creations on the bed. The only down side is that you must train for the many steps."

"Beautiful, romantic hotel with amazing views. We stayed for three nights in a deluxe room. Staff were amazing. They helped us book a restaurant for the sunset view. Breakfast can be served to your room, which is lovely."
