PB hotel design editorial

At the apex of Aristotelous Square, where Thessaloniki's grandest neoclassical boulevard fans out toward the Thermaic Gulf, a five-storey Belle Époque building bearing the name ΕΞΕΛΣΙΟΡ in terracotta lettering has anchored the city's civic life since 1926. The Excelsior was built in the years following the catastrophic 1917 fire that destroyed much of the city centre, part of the ambitious replanning effort led by French urbanist Ernest Hébrard that gave Thessaloniki its distinctive Mediterranean-European character. The facade carries all the hallmarks of that reconstruction moment — wrought-iron balconies in scrolled ironwork, pilastered upper storeys, a curved corner bay capped by a shallow pediment — and the building's relationship to the canopy of plane trees below gives the streetside terrace a quality closer to a Parisian boulevard café than a hotel forecourt. Inside, the contrast between eras is handled with restraint rather than drama. Guest rooms retain their original plaster cornicing and generous ceiling heights, with bleached oak floors and amber-toned silk curtains pulling warmth from the bone-white walls; contemporary art in a graphic, stripe-based idiom punctuates the spaces without competing with the architecture. The breakfast room on the upper floor works through a different register entirely — deep green coffered ceilings, crystal basket chandeliers, and arched ironwork windows overlooking the square's canopy — while the ground-floor restaurant has been refitted in a cooler contemporary palette of dark timber slat screens, charcoal upholstery, and smoked-glass pendant lighting.

"I’ll start with the positive sides; the sweet lady at the reception when we entered the hotel was very nice , very friendly. The valet service is good because there is a construction going on so not easy to find the parking garage. However it is expensive ; €15 valet+ €25 parking = €40 for the car. The location of the hotel is just at the center of the city, close to Tsimiski which is the shopping and restaurant street. It is a dog-friendly hotel, they put amenities for your dog (bed etc.) however when you reserve the room there is a note saying ‘charges may apply’ so yes the charges were applied to us as we were expecting but they did not inform us beforehand or when we checked in about the amount. I guess they just decide if they apply or not or how much should they apply according to the guest….. we paid €30 per night for our small poodle. Breakfast is a small buffet but a rich one. We could not have breakfast because they dont let the dogs in, we suggest that we could sit away from the buffet and other guests but no luck. It is understandable, but since we could not leave the dog at the room because when he is alone he could bark and disturb other guests in the morning, we couldnt have breakfast 🥲 The rooms; it is not luxurious as they suggests the tv stands at your feet and it only shows Greek channels so if you are a foreign guest, you cant use the TV and it just keeps space. The bathroom and shower are seperate, shower is just next to the door and has a big mirror across so you are having a shower all visible to the room, no privacy. There were hair in the bathroom counter and on the bathrobes so it is really annoying for me, I could not put my stuff anywhere since I dont believe it was clean enough. Bathroom door was not closing properly it was broken I guess. The bed was not comfortable. There is no net on the balcony door so you cant keep it open to get some air. The A/C is soo loud it is hard to sleep with that sound if you fully use it, we just used at the lowest fan speed to hear less. Overall, the location and the hotel staff is good but the hotel itself is really overpriced and overrated for this quality."

"We recently stayed at this amazing small hotel for two nights, and it absolutely made our trip to Thessaloniki even more memorable. The location is incredibly central, making it the perfect base for exploring this lively Greek city. Every single member of the staff was friendly, welcoming, and eager to help. We stayed in a superior room, which was wonderfully spacious, absolutely spotless, and featured a very comfortable bed. The bathroom and the provided amenities were excellent and more than met our expectations. A huge highlight of our stay was the breakfast. It was high-quality and totally amazing, offering a fantastic selection of hot egg-based dishes alongside an extensive cold buffet. I have to give a special mention to the breakfast staff - they were perfectly attentive without ever being pushy. All in all, this is a lovely hotel, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Thessaloniki!"
