PB hotel design editorial

Grande Anse beach on Grenada's southwestern coast had long been the island's most coveted strip of white sand, but serious architectural ambition arrived there only in 2017 when Silversands Grenada opened as the Caribbean's first genuinely contemporary ultra-luxury resort. The three-storey building, designed by the London-based firm Goddard Littlefair with local architectural input, deploys a language of dark hardwood vertical fins, glass-railed balconies, and a low-pitched green roof that echoes the island's plantation vernacular without quoting it directly. Lush bamboo and royal palms planted immediately against the facade blur the boundary between building and landscape, so the structure from the pool side carries the feeling of something that grew here rather than arrived. The 43 rooms and suites are finished in a palette of pale oak slatted millwork, polished concrete floors softened by wide-plank timber zones, and tightly edited furniture — rattan bucket chairs, tulip-base side tables in matte black, linen daybed benches — that keeps the focus on the framed Caribbean horizon beyond the full-width sliding glass walls. The lobby bar extends that grammar outward through steel-framed bifold glass panels onto a covered terrace, its slatted timber ceiling continuing the exterior fin motif into the interior. A narrow reflecting pool draws an axis from the building directly to the sea, lined with dark timber pergolas and woven-rope outdoor chairs that hold the composition in place without overwhelming it.

"An amazing resort that is quiet and luxurious. Beautiful and maticulous grounds especially the pool; it is very instagramable. The rooms were beautiful and well designed. Highly recommended. The beach was spectacular."

"Beautiful hotel with thoughtful architectural design, not least the incredibly long infinity pool which forms the centrepiece of the resort. Rarely have I been to a hotel where the service is so consistently outstanding, whether thats at reception, the restaurants or around the pool. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. So much so that I was hoping there are more ‘SILVERSANDS’ resorts elsewhere in the world that we could check out but Grenada is a one off. The vibe felt very much like relaxation but having children with us never felt like a problem given there is so much space around the pool. My only suggestion for improvement is communication through a newsletter or better app so that activities are easier to publicise as to what’s available at the hotel."

"A lovely experience, with great staff. I have rated this as 4 out of 5, but it will not take much to raise this to 5. Look beyond the "symptoms" and keep up the good work."

"Anyone who’s thinking about staying here should be aware that one of the beach bars next door hosts parties until 1 a.m., playing music on loudspeakers with so much bass that it rattles the hotel room window and the music can be heard clearly inside, with a sound machine on and earplugs. The response from management is that the police told them it’s a permitted party so there’s nothing they can do. I doubt the permit allows the bar to play music at whatever volume they like, but regardless of whether management is being honest about what they did to mitigate the problem, it is a major issue with this hotel. I will update this review with more details after our stay, but I also don’t think the service reaches the level it should for this price range: food takes forever to come out, staff is inattentive and does not circulate sufficiently in the pool/beach area, and staff is generally unapologetic when you raise issues. This is truly a shame because the property itself is beautiful, the food is good, and the country and its people are a delight."
