PB hotel design editorial

Grande Anse beach on Grenada's southwestern coast had long been the island's most coveted strip of white sand, but serious architectural ambition arrived there only in 2017 when Silversands Grenada opened as the Caribbean's first genuinely contemporary ultra-luxury resort. The three-storey building, designed by the London-based firm Goddard Littlefair with local architectural input, deploys a language of dark hardwood vertical fins, glass-railed balconies, and a low-pitched green roof that echoes the island's plantation vernacular without quoting it directly. Lush bamboo and royal palms planted immediately against the facade blur the boundary between building and landscape, so the structure from the pool side carries the feeling of something that grew here rather than arrived. The 43 rooms and suites are finished in a palette of pale oak slatted millwork, polished concrete floors softened by wide-plank timber zones, and tightly edited furniture — rattan bucket chairs, tulip-base side tables in matte black, linen daybed benches — that keeps the focus on the framed Caribbean horizon beyond the full-width sliding glass walls. The lobby bar extends that grammar outward through steel-framed bifold glass panels onto a covered terrace, its slatted timber ceiling continuing the exterior fin motif into the interior. A narrow reflecting pool draws an axis from the building directly to the sea, lined with dark timber pergolas and woven-rope outdoor chairs that hold the composition in place without overwhelming it.

"Excellent Hotel, prefect size, clean and modern, still feels and looks almost new even though it's 10 years old. Location on the beach is perfect and the hotel manages an impressive 100m pool. There is well equipped gym but on the small size. It was perfectly adequate at that time of the year for 2 people (low season) but I could see it feeling cramped if more than 4 people tried to exercise at the same time. Our room was spacious (first floor) with massive ceiling height and full size windows. The one downside is that it was located in a building built behind the hotel's own beach villas (and one of the restaurant) so although the hotel is a beachfront property, we could not see the beach from our room (and only a somewhat obstructed sea view), and I am not convinced the view was that much better if we had taken the more expensive top floor bedrooms (second floor). There are two buildings holding the bedrooms and we were in the one closest to the reception so my advice: try to get a room in the furthest building. That way you might have a better view of the sea but you will avoid having the constant background noise from some machinery located at the back of the restaurant that was right in front of our room. However, the one thing that made up for all of the little niggles: we requested a late checkout and we were granted a free extension until our actual departure time for the airport so we were able to relax on the beach until the very last minute (4:30pm) !... Food wise: Breakfast was great, buffet had good choices with some of the best croissants and pains au chocolat I've had in years (I will go as far as saying that they were better than what you can get today in your average boulangerie in Paris !...). A la carte offer was also nice with some hit and misses : the bread for the avocado on toast came NOT toasted and some days the French toasts were more like toasted brioche... both were still nice but one was soggy instead of dry and the other dry instead of moist !... (but it really wasn't a big deal... just nitpicking because everything else was excellent ! ). Grenadier Restaurant: Good choice of meat and fish with service on par with the quality of food. One evening the waitress offered my wife to change her choice of fish when she noticed she didn't get what she thought she ordered. Asiatique restaurant: Didn't feel so compelled to eat Asian food while on a Caribbean holiday (just preference for trying local food anywhere we go) so we almost gave it a miss. Laziness to leave the hotel and lack of planning meant we gave it a try. Food was good but we didn't feel the need to go back. Azzuro Restaurant: Again, we were not too sure about going Italian on a Caribbean island but it was our last evening, we were told the chef was a "real" Italian and we wanted to visit the sister hotel anyway. Absolutely no regrets, food was delicious and the "real" Italian chef came out to apologise for a small mix-up in our order and even offered us deserts on the house. The highlight was the staff with everybody friendly and attentive without being overbearing. From the breakfast staff to the beach/pool attendants every request was greeted with a smile and a friendly vibe. Maybe because it was low season and the hotel was really quiet so the staff was never under pressure but we've been to places where that didn't seem to help !... We had such a relaxing time that we really tried to get out of the hotel to see more of the island but in the end, apart from our early morning walks along the Grande Anse beach and diners in local restaurants we were really happy just to enjoy the beach facilities (paddle boards, sea kayaks and snorkelling) and spot turtles poking their head out of the water from our loungers !..."

"My husband and I had a wonderful and relaxing stay at SilverSands Grand Anse Hotel, in Grenada. We appreciated the welcome chocolate pod made with local spices. The hotel boasts a warm, inviting atmosphere with tasteful decor, and our spacious room was spotless, beautifully furnished in a modern style, and featured an exceptionally clean bathroom with an oversized tub. The service was particularly impressive. Every staff member was friendly, professional, and attentive, starting with the refreshing check-in greetings with local drinks and cool towels and continuing through the smooth check-out process. The hotel had everything we needed, and we slept soundly in the comfortable bed each night, undisturbed by noise. We also appreciated the nightly turndown service. Breakfast was a daily highlight, with a generous and beautifully presented spread of excellent quality. The local coffee was especially wonderful. We also loved the Friday Night Buffet, which felt like a curated culinary experience due to the beautiful presentation and service by the chefs. The amazing infinity pool was the best we've ever seen, and we enjoyed relaxing by it at night, enjoying the ocean breeze. Special thanks to Steffan and Emma for their exceptional service in the restaurants. Their attention, warm smiles, and professionalism truly elevated our experience; Emma's service was particularly outstanding. We found the hotel to be of excellent value, considering the decor, amenities, atmosphere, cleanliness, and service. We are already looking forward to returning to SilverSands and hope to see Staffan and Emma again. This hotel created wonderful memories, and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting Grenada."

"My husband found this hotel on line and we decided to visit because the pictures and reviews. We felt totally pampered from the moment we were picked up at the airport to the time we were dropped off a week later. This is probably the best hotel experience we have ever had, and we are in our 60's and love to travel. The staff was so attentive and the food was fabulous. We did not eat off property much because there was always something different to try at the restaurants on site. The front desk staff was able to book several activities for us and it was nice to have it just added to our hotel bill. The room was very clean with so many amenities. Spa service was excellent and we had a whole week of just 'being'. We would defiantly come back and visit again. I would say the hospitality that we experienced at this resort far above others we have had over the years. Thank you to the whole team at Silversands!!!"

"A luxury Caribbean experience! Our room was gorgeous. The local foods on the menu are a treat. And, all staff members are so attentive. But one of the best parts of my trip was my spa treatment with Shandi. My pedicure was amazing! I cannot remember when my feet have felt this soft and smooth. Shandi is outstanding! And other guests raved of their massage with her. Don’t miss booking a treatment at the spa with Shandi."
