PB hotel design editorial

Grande Anse Beach on Grenada's southwestern coast has drawn visitors since the island first appeared on the Caribbean resort circuit, and Spice Island Beach Resort has held its prime stretch of that powder-white shore since 1961, making it one of the oldest family-owned luxury properties in the Eastern Caribbean. The low-slung white structures visible from the air — pitched metal roofs, deep-shaded arcades, pavilion volumes that step toward the waterline through groves of sea grape and palm — keep a deliberately domestic scale, never rising above two storeys and presenting to the beach as a compound of generous private bungalows rather than a hotel block. The interiors carry a palette drawn directly from the surrounding sea: teal bolster cushions and aqua-bordered dhurrie rugs against warm limestone-tiled floors, dark-stained timber headboards with woven rattan detailing, and ceiling fans turning slowly under exposed beam soffits. Louvred plantation shutters and arched openings framing glimpses of the Caribbean give the rooms an atmosphere closer to a well-appointed plantation house than a resort suite. The main restaurant extends under a broad arched colonnade with tongue-and-groove timber ceilings, wicker dining chairs upholstered in coral and ikat fabric, and pendant chandeliers in a vernacular colonial register. The freeform mosaic-tiled pool, set above beach level and surrounded by travertine paving, frames views across the bay toward St. George's Harbour — the kind of carefully considered sightline that speaks to decades of incremental refinement rather than a single grand design gesture.

"A most gorgeous resort located on a beautiful beach, this is true. The resort facilities can't be faulted; everything looked modern, well maintained and very attractive. Walking into the resort, you truly do feel like you're somewhere special and luxurious. We stayed 5 nights, and whilst mostly enjoyable, there were a few aspects which were disappointing which I'll list below. 1) The house wines are of a very low quality. Most of the wines, both red and white, are from Chile and Argentina and just dreadful. 2) There is a serious lack of ambience in the evenings around the bar, and common areas. Maybe the cheap wine contributes to this. 3) We received conflicting information about dinner pricing, and one very rude staff member (manager, perhaps?), refused to show us the a la carte menu, even though we had been told it was available at the Sea & Surf restaurant. Eventually we were very reluctantly presented with the a la carte menu after what felt like an arm wrestling competition. Totally unprofessional and gave us a very bad vibe. 4) For those not on the all-inclusive plan, like us, the fixed menu pricing at Oliver's is an eye watering $140.00 USD per person, not inclusive of drinks. This was a bit much, given the smaller portions, and limited selections. 5) The beach, though extremely beautiful, gets a very steady flow of cruise ship passengers, dogs, and private citizens walking by, morning, afternoon and evening. This didn't lend itself to the relaxing resort ambience I was hoping for. Certainly no fault of the resort, but it bears mentioning. 6) The bathroom is very poorly designed. I didn't enjoy only having one sink for the two of us. Our suite had an enormous bathroom, with a long vanity, yet only one sink. There is also a large towel holder mounted directly in front of the one sink, so it juts out and you have to lean over it to use the sink itself which becomes very tedious. The toilet is also tightly placed at the end of the vanity, making it claustrophobic. All of this is a pity because it could be a very beautiful bathroom, but these are huge design fails and made it uncomfortable. 7) Charging for cheap bottled water that won't even open is really unacceptable at a 5 star resort! On a more positive note, the property is very gorgeous! Stunning, in fact. There is an abundance of places to sit and enjoy whether it be at the beach, pool, or many lovely sitting areas. Breakfasts were wonderful with extremely high quality pressed coffee. The majority of staff we encountered do maintain a nice level of hospitality and professionalism. The housekeeping and maintenance staff also deserve credit as it is a pristinely clean resort."

"Visited the property in 2018 and had a fantastic stay , I was excited to return. However things have noticeably changed . Positives Staff with the exception of the resort manager were very pleasant and generally the service was good . Food was good Spa , we had several great massages. Location , excellent beach . We had a seagrape beach suite . Housekeeping kept it clean . Negatives It was evident since my last visit cutbacks are in place Breakfast buffet was limited in choice and wasn’t available for self service, it was served by a member of staff and it felt restricted. Bar drinks menu listed champagne cocktails and we were told by staff that champagne was available by the glass . This is not the case , it was Prosecco . Champagne was only available to buy by the bottle , which we ended up doing at great expense. Tennis courts were unavailable for use , an explanation was not given . Bathroom amenities not replenished with regularity. Late check out was offered complimentary in 2018 . It now comes with a hefty 350 USD charge . It’s important to note that, the resort’s occupancy was approx 30 per cent. The staff told us this repeatedly. After a very unpleasant exchange with Sheldon the resort manager we negotiated this down to 250 USD charge. Frankly we found him to be rude and unprofessional . Our encounter with him was unnecessary and upsetting. Due to the above we will not be returning to the spice island resort."

"My family and I have been returning to Spice Island Beach Resort ever since our very first visit. From the moment we arrived, we were completely smitten by the genuine warmth and welcoming culture that makes you feel like part of the family. From the groundskeepers to management—and especially the wonderful owner, Janelle Hopkin—the entire team consistently anticipates our every need with care and grace. I have never been able to relax anywhere the way I do at Spice, and my husband feels exactly the same. Our son absolutely adores the Nutmeg Pod, and we are incredibly grateful for the resort’s exceptional childcare, which allows us to truly unwind with total peace of mind. After five or six visits, we still can’t wait to return—especially with another trip planned for July. I truly can’t say enough wonderful things about Spice Island Beach Resort; it has become our home away from home. A special thank you to Fabian, Katrina, Lyndonna, Dexter, Dwight, and everyone else who makes our stays so memorable (you know who you are!). See you soon, Spice—thank you for the beautiful memories you continue to create."

"I had an amazing 5-star experience! I would definitely recommend staying here if you’re planning a trip to Grenada. We were greeted with welcome cocktails at check-in, and Spice Island made sure our airport transportation was smooth and easy. The food was fantastic! Each meal was a multi-course affair, and we could easily customize it to our tastes and allergies. The afternoon tea selection and presentation could be improved, but it was still quite good. I’m still raving about the fresh pesto pasta! The garden tour was a great way to see the property and learn about the plants and ingredients used in the culinary cuisine. We did get sunburned after a long day at the beach, but the staff were so helpful. We asked them for fresh-cut aloe vera during dinner, which was waiting in our room after dinner. The mini bar in our room was fully stocked, and the cleaning and turn-down service was quick and efficient. The private Plunge pool was ideal for our stay. The spa treatments with massages were wonderful. The beach was calm, clean, and free from people trying to sell things, which we really appreciated. I wish I remember the gentleman’s name who was apart of the garden tour but also some of the guest exercise experiences. He was originally from Grenada. He was awesome, kind and made our stay great."
