PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings on Budapest's Erzsébet körút announce themselves with the theatrical confidence of the former Borsodi-Berzeviczy Palace, a late-nineteenth-century Historicist confection by architect Meinig Arthur whose corner tower, gilded baroque spire, and carved stone figures have commanded this stretch of the Grand Boulevard since 1894. The New York Life Insurance Company took the building first, commissioning its celebrated ground-floor café — the New York Kávéház — which became one of the great literary gathering places of Central Europe. Anantara New York Palace Budapest, set within this six-storey landmark, carries that layered identity carefully: the restored state rooms retain their original white-and-gilt stucco cartouches, Murano-style chandeliers, and elaborately carved mirror surrounds, visible in the dining room images here, where low-slung velvet chairs in dark tobacco sit against plasterwork of almost delirious density. The 185 guestrooms and suites, redesigned as part of a comprehensive restoration, work in deliberate counterpoint to all that Historicist extravagance outside. Interiors settle into a palette of warm taupe, pale champagne, and burnished bronze — upholstered platform beds, nailhead-trimmed sofas, and lacquered coffee tables with ebonised detailing giving the spaces a quietly contemporary register that doesn't compete with the facade. Upper-floor suites gain floor-to-ceiling glazing and private terraces with rooftop views across the seventh district. Below ground, the spa pool is lined in dark stone and backlit in indigo, a cavern-like contrast to the gilded public rooms above.

"We had lunch at the New York Café. The building is beautiful and the atmosphere is pleasant. The food was delicious, we enjoyed every dish. The service was also excellent. Teodóra Martin was kind and attentive with us, and the rest of the staff were friendly as well. We left with a great experience and would happily return."

"Had a wonderful dinner at the New York Café and the experience was absolutely unforgettable. The atmosphere is elegant and historic, the food was beautifully presented and delicious, and the entire evening felt truly special. A special thank you goes to our waitress, Kristina, who made the night even better. She was incredibly kind, attentive, and professional, always making sure everything was perfect without ever being intrusive. Her warm attitude and genuine smile really stood out and made us feel welcome from start to finish. Highly recommend this place, and if you’re lucky enough to be served by Krisztina, you’re in great hands!"

"Breathtakingly beautiful hotel, with a well equipped, spacious, comfortable room (booked premium), large luxurious bathroom and everything spotlessly clean. Housekeeping was outstanding. Well situated for buses, trams and metro (free for seniors) but also walking distance to the main attractions. The jewel in the crown is the opulent New York Cafe for a sumptuous, delicious breakfast. Abel and Norbert’s service was impeccable and they are a credit to the hotel. I can’t think of a more impressive breakfast experience in my many years of travelling around Europe. The atrium is also impressive, and the Poet’s Bar provides a cosy, sophisticated atmosphere for a great cocktail. All staff were very helpful, friendly and efficient. Slight downside - the sound of sirens and traffic noise at night; however this is to be expected in the city and I acknowledge that I am a sensitive sleeper. The room was quite hot, but opening the window wasn’t an option due to noise from the road. Despite that, the overall experience was outstanding and we would return in a heartbeat."
