PB hotel design editorial

Among the grandest surviving examples of Hungarian Art Nouveau civic architecture, the building at Erzsébet körút 43 began its life in 1896 as the palatial headquarters of the Fiume Insurance Company, designed by Alajos Hauszmann — the same architect responsible for the Royal Palace reconstruction on Castle Hill. Continental Hotel Budapest inhabits this heritage carefully, its most arresting interior space being the vaulted barrel-ceiling lobby bar, where Hauszmann's original plasterwork ribs fan outward in layered geometric relief above a curved white balustrade and herringbone parquet floor. A glazed atrium arch at the far end floods the room with diffused daylight, the effect somewhere between Viennese Secession and Beaux-Arts civic grandeur. The 272 guest rooms take a more contemporary direction, with large upholstered headboards in tobacco-brown leather, walnut veneer desks on gilt-finished curved legs, and shag-pile rugs softening the wood-look flooring — a palette of caramel, taupe, and warm cream that keeps the atmosphere residential rather than institutional. The restaurant works a confident Art Deco register, its elaborate parquet-on-parquet floor inlaid in contrasting timber tones beneath Tom Dixon-style pendant lights and gold-leaf ceiling medallions. Up on the roof level, a skylit spa pool sits beneath a succession of tilted glass panels that bring an almost industrial clarity to the space, lined with mosaic tile walls and Finnish sauna timber — a calm counterpoint to the ornamental exuberance below.

"Spotless hotel close to The Ruin Bars and near to restaurants. Bus stop near the hotel has a direct route to Szechenyi Thermal Baths. 20 min walk to centre/river Danube. Excellent staff throughout, particularly a very kind, helpful and knowledgeable chap called Janos. Breakfast was very good."

"We spent 6 days at the hotel, and it was a wonderful experience. The architecture and the history of the place are truly amazing. We have no complaints about the wellness area — we met very kind ladies there, and the wellness facilities were excellent. We also visited the upstairs bar and received great service. The staff paid attention to us, and we received our drinks quite quickly despite arriving during a busy period. The waiter, Corwell — apologies if I spelled his name incorrectly — was always kind and happy to chat with us. We were also very satisfied with the cocktails. We tried the seasonal spring drinks, the whipped cream one and the mint one. Corwell mentioned that the whipped cream cocktail was actually the personal creation of the gentleman working behind the bar at the time, and we made sure to thank him as well. His name was Chris or Christian. We also left a tip, but they definitely deserve recognition for their service. We would have liked to have dinner there as well, but since the bar only offered smaller snacks, they confidently recommended the restaurant to us. And unfortunately, that turned out to be the worst decision, because what we experienced there was simply unacceptable. During the first two visits, it felt as though they did not want us to dine there and were trying to send us back to the bar. Since we had already come from there, understandably we did not wish to return upstairs. The waiters themselves were kind and attentive. I would especially like to mention Rolland and Bridgitte, who were very friendly throughout the evening and fulfilled all of our requests. However, the head waiters — the lady and the two gentlemen in suits — were not. They did not really help the waiters, even though there was clearly plenty to do. They constantly gave us uncomfortable looks, as if they did not want us there. The food itself was excellent. The steak was delicious, and so was the fish that was cleaned in front of us. However, it was disturbing that the bearded head waiter was watching videos or movies on his phone and trying to flirt with the waitress girls, hugging and touching them. It made us feel very uncomfortable and awkward during our dinner. We also had problems with the restaurant drinks, because we had to choose new drinks three times before the bartender lady was finally able to prepare them. She also did not seem to spend much time in the restaurant despite the heavy traffic, and in many cases the waiters themselves had to prepare the drinks. I believe that in such a prestigious restaurant and hotel, this kind of behavior and attitude is unacceptable. Aside from this, we had a very enjoyable stay overall and we will definitely return!"

"Lovely hotel, very pleasant and helpful reception staff, hotel was spotless and well maintained, breakfast was really plentiful with lots of choice for everybody, dining room staff very pleasant and accommodating if you needed anything. I found a birthday treat in my bedroom which was a really lovely surprise. The hotel is in a great location for transport, shopping, restaurants and cafes. My husband and myself had a lovely 4 days at this hotel and would definitely stay here again if we ever returned to this beautiful historic Budapest which we loved which hopefully we will."
