PB hotel design editorial

When Franz Joseph I still presided over a unified Austro-Hungarian empire, the Grand Hotel Royal on Budapest's Erzsébet körút was already one of Central Europe's most celebrated addresses — a six-storey Beaux-Arts palace completed in 1896 to mark the Magyar millennium, its mansard roofs and oxidised copper domes asserting civic confidence on the city's great boulevard. Restored and reopened in 2003 after a meticulous rehabilitation, the Corinthia Hotel Budapest preserved that monumental limestone facade while threading 414 rooms through its layered interior, the most extraordinary of which is the original Royal Spa: a double-height thermal pool hall lined in travertine and mosaic tile, wrought-iron gallery rails curving around arched windows filled with stained glass in amber and cobalt, the whole composition closer to a Habsburg bathhouse than anything a contemporary hotel developer would sanction. The interiors navigate two distinct registers. Standard rooms carry warm ochre walls, dark mahogany casegoods, and golden silk drapery that acknowledge the building's nineteenth-century bones without dressing them up as pastiche. The refurbished suites take a bolder position — dove-grey upholstered headboards with lacquered wood detailing, amber velvet quilts, and cobalt cushions in crushed silk, abstract canvases above the bed pulling the palette toward something more decisively contemporary. The bar, meanwhile, settles into a comfortable middle ground: deep oxblood leather tub chairs on a circular-patterned wool carpet, a mahogany back-bar lit like a private library, wrought-iron screens dividing the space with a lightness the architecture elsewhere foregoes.

"Me and my husband stayed at the hotel for my birthday in April. It was the 2nd time staying at the hotel, as we enjoyed it so much the 1st time. As soon as you step into the hotel lobby you have that ‘wow’ feeling. All the staff truly make your stay a memorable one. We had the executive lounge included in our stay, & it was exceptional the choice of canapés, desserts and snacks are amazing not forgetting the sparkling wine and drinks choice too. A special thank you to the lounge manager who looked after us. Krisztina from concierge looked after us really well, and it was a pleasure to see her on our 2nd visit. The food and beverage manager Katelin also made our stay extremely memorable. We are already planning to come again next April! Couldn’t recommend this hotel highly enough."

"It was our first time in Budapest and we stayed there to celebrate myself and another friends milestone birthdays. Although they upgraded one of the rooms (2 were booked) I couldn't see much difference. We got a coffee machine (that didn't work), patio doors that led to an open area overlooking the atruim dining area. No chairs or table there and you couldn't come back to your room if door was shut so bit of a security issue. What's the point of this added feature? The twin room was dimly lighted and dark. It didn't feel like an upgraded room. The room cleaning was not consistent and felt rushed. The turn down service was inconsistent. No spa was included in our room rate. Just to use the spa was 32€ for the day. This didn't include treatment costs. So we didn't use. We didn't think it was value for money. There was no discount either, even though we have a loyalty membership. I have seen many reviews on how special occasions have been acknowledged and guests given an excellent and preferential treatment. But for us, the hotel failed to acknowledge our milestone birthdays even though I wrote a couple of times, months in advance of the trip. The reception on our arrival said that there would be a surprise in our room. We waited and nothing materialised for the duration of our stay. A couple good points, the concierge was really helpful and he knew what to recommend us for sightseeing. Breakfast was lovely as was the omelette chef. Good variety of food for all. However, we felt our trip and experience of the stay at this hotel, was marred due to the points earlier raised."

"I prefer a hotel with a large comfortable lobby. This hotel had this and more with its atriums. We had the spa package but did not take advantage of it. No fault of the hotel. If this is your thing, this place is for you. The room was comfortable. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. The breakfasts were amazing. Dinner was good with prices a bit higher as you might expect."
