PB hotel design editorial

Three buildings spanning sixty years of Budapest's architectural ambition — a Neo-Renaissance palazzo from 1873, an Art Nouveau commercial block from 1910–1913, and a sober Rationalist structure from 1937 — were unified and reborn in 2023 as the Dorothea Hotel, Autograph Collection, one of the more architecturally layered hospitality projects central Europe has seen in years. Piero Lissoni and his Milan studio Lissoni & Partners took on the challenge of threading these distinct personalities together across 216 rooms and suites in Lipótváros, Budapest's civic heart. The most arresting gesture is a heritage staircase flanked by more than 5,000 custom Zsolnay ceramic tiles — the famous Pécs manufactory's handcraft scaled to something closer to an installation than a decorative flourish. What Lissoni brings to the interiors is his characteristic refusal of period cosplay. Rooms carry the bones of their nineteenth-century shells — tall panelled windows, deep cornicing, herringbone oak floors — but furnish them with dark four-poster frames, emerald velvet seating, and Arabescato marble tabletops that feel more Milan than Mitteleuropa. The atrium restaurant, with its vertiginous black steel gallery structure, pendant lighting, bentwood café chairs, and dense tropical planting, pulls off a convincing metropolitan ambiguity. The spa descends into something quieter: a lap pool walled in slabs of deep Verde marble, candlelit and carved from the building's foundations, where the city above feels very far away.

"Staff is wonderful! Location is great. And balcony is outstanding .. we are in a contemporary studio suite, it’s a bit small, but comes with a nice sized balcony, perfect for drinking coffee in the morning. As an elite member, breakfast is included and also an elite happy hour in evening. They weren’t able to upgrade us, even though I am ambassador, but that is okay. Enjoying our stay here! Special shout out to the manager Sophie who checked us in close to midnight yesterday."

"An excellent three night stay. Really good central location; close to the Danube, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and plenty of restaurants. Check in team could not have been friendlier or more welcoming. They were also very helpful on check out. Lovely well-equipped room; we had a street view but did not have any issues with outside noise. Breakfast was good and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Beautifully designed and spotlessly clean throughout. Spa facilities were lovely too and a welcome peaceful break from touring the city. Highly recommended."

"This hotel was absolutely lovely. The lobby is stunning with exceptional attention to detail on the interior design. My husband is an architect and my daughter an interior designer and they were both in awe. The check-in staff was extremely kind. The room was incredible. We had a larger king room with a sofa bed since our adult daughter was traveling with us. The sofabed area was really an entire living room. Plenty of room for the 3 of us. The bathroom was gorgeous, with a private water closet, extremely large shower with rain head and a regular wall mounted shower head, a soaking tub, and a very large counter top for all our "stuff". There were robes and slippers provided as well. The ONLY downside to the bathroom was that there was only 1 sink and the glass between the room and the bathroom was see through (not clear but shaded) so we had to kind of change in the shower or water closet since our daughter was with us. Breakfast was included and it was a very extensive buffet with a la carte options as well. The breakfast room was a beautiful garden like setting byut indoors. We also used the spa amenities every day. There was a sauna, steam room, cold plunge shower (like a bucket of cold water dumps on your head but people seemed to enjoy it. There was an indoor pool which was nice but there was only about 8 loungers - 4 on each end - and they were always full with people waiting to use them. The hotel was very centrally located and walking distance to almost everything - about 45 minutes down to the park/thermal baths/art museums, and about 15-20 mintes across the bridge to the Buda Castle/Fisherman's bastion and about 20 minutes to the Parliament building. Tons of shopping in the immediate vicinity and walking distance to all the best restaurants. I would definately stay here agin next time I'm in Budapest."

"My husband and I booked one night at the Dorothea for before our river cruise. We were upgraded to a Junior Suite before we even boarded our flight from the US because my husband is Platinum Bonvoy. From the moment we stepped into the building, it was special. Even the lobby smelled amazing. The suite was stunning with a view of the ferris wheel. A huge king-sized bed, raised living area with a rotating television, gigantic standing tub, massive bathroom counters. I was so sad to be leaving after just one night. The location is superb, right in the center of town, yet quiet and spa-like. Breakfast was delicious, as well. We will definitely be back next time we're in Budapest."

"Wonderful hotel, so glad we stayed here. Location is perfect, easy access to Vaci Utca, #2 trolly and taxi right outside door. We picked this hotel for it location. The inner courtyard/atrium is amazing, beautiful area. Very good craft cocktails at the bar, did not get to try the breakfast, though it did look amazing from above. There is a self service water/sparkling water station near the elevator of every level, very nice touch, never seen this before. We used it several times for the sparkling water. Staff was very warm, friendly and greeting. Room was quiet and comfortable, though you can hear neighbors exiting when the doors close. Room was clean and comfortable, large enough. I would definitely return. This hotel is #2 on Tripadvisor and I see why. Checks all the boxes, there isn't any negatives or cons I can really think of. 5 star for sure!"
