PB hotel design editorial

One of Central Europe's most extravagant exercises in Hungarian Art Nouveau, the Gresham Palace was commissioned by the London-based Gresham Life Assurance Company and completed in 1906 to designs by Zsigmond Quittner, its limestone facade rising in layers of foliate ornament, wrought-iron peacock gates, and Zsolnay ceramic detailing directly opposite the Chain Bridge. Decades of Soviet-era neglect left the building in severe disrepair before a meticulous nine-year restoration returned it to use in 2004 as the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest, a 179-room property that remains the most architecturally significant hotel conversion in the city. The restoration preserved Quittner's soaring stained-glass atrium, now the setting for a bar furnished with velvet club chairs in teal and gold, Tom Dixon-style task lamps lining a long counter of dark marble, and a grand piano anchoring the room beneath a blush Murano chandelier. Guest rooms move between two registers: the standard categories dressed in dark-stained four-poster beds, herringbone parquet, and Artemide Tolomeo floor lamps against a warm cream ground; the suites given over to lacquered wall panelling in pale chartreuse, inset with fine brass-lined reveals that frame the headboard as architectural object. At roof level, the spa pool is lined in mosaic tile and enclosed by angled glazing that frames a roofscape view — an emphatically contemporary insertion set within a building whose ornamental surface remains, over a century on, without rival in Budapest.

Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest Reviews

"The premier luxury hotel in Budapest, located right across the Danube, Four Seasons once again demonstrates why it’s still the best luxurious hotel brand. Opened in 2004, less than 200 rooms and only 12 suites. Built in 1905, it was never a palace but a grand building built by an insurance company. What makes the FS as always, is its people. Management always around, concierge always ready to assist. From the door men to the spa to the restaurants, staff is well trained to deliver the highest aspects of hospitality. Our suite on the fourth floor overlooked the Danube river and the Buda part of Budapest. Nice balconies to enjoy the view. Room features their signature bed and powerful rain shower. My favorite area is the spa open at 7am. Best part is that the locker rooms are open 24/7 and the shower is worth the cost of your room. Pool and relaxation area on the fifth floor very nice and full range of amenities included. Gym is decent but needs a Peloton bike. Breakfast at KOLLAZS is divine with a world-class buffet and and all a-la-carte items included. I enjoyed one of the best shakshuka dishes rivaling Israel. Buffet includes traditional Hungarian offerings. Interiors beautiful and has outdoor seating. Dinner menu mix of American and Hungarian options. The other restaurant on premises is MUZSA, features pricey craft cocktails and Asian inspired menu. Overall, the perfect sanctuary when visiting Budapest and you want luxury and service at its best."

"Staying at this hotel is already a unique experience simply because it is inside a castle. The lobby is absolutely stunning, and the room was excellent, spacious, comfortable, and very quiet, even being right next to the bridge. The view is breathtaking, with a frontal panoramic view of Buda Castle. The staff was extremely polite, professional, and attentive throughout the stay. An important tip: do not miss the cocktails at the bar. They are outstanding and truly part of the experience. This hotel is a landmark in the region and definitely worth every cent."
