PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Váci utca and the Danube embankment, where Budapest's inner city reaches its most theatrical pitch, a 1901 eclectic-baroque palace designed by Győző Czigler for Archduchess Maria Clotilde of Austria has been restored into Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, after more than a century of institutional and administrative use. The building's crown — an elaborate ornamented tower rising above a limestone facade encrusted with sculpted cartouches, wrought ironwork, and gilded finials — was always the most recognizable silhouette on this stretch of the Pest embankment, and the restoration led by Bánáti + Hartvig has returned it to something close to its original ambition. Inside, the Hungarian studio Artus Studio managed the interiors across 130 rooms and suites, threading a contemporary sensibility through the historic envelope without flattening either. The standard rooms carry dark-stained timber desks in macassar ebony, teal velvet accent chairs, and patterned wool carpets in warm stone tones, while the rooftop mansard suites trade carved plasterwork for raked glazing and Iznik-patterned kilim runners against blonde oak floors. The ground-floor restaurant terrace, enclosed beneath a bronze-framed retractable glass canopy, brings olives and ficus trees into a room that manages to feel simultaneously urban and sheltered. From the rooftop bar, gilded domes and baroque spires crowd the horizon in every direction — the city performing its own grandeur just above eye level.

"As a long-time Platinum Elite Marriott Bonvoy member, I’ve stayed at hotels all over the world and cannot recall an experience that compares to the Matild Palace. The Staff. Everyone — and I do mean everyone — we encountered went out of their way to make our stay exceptional. It felt like their singular mission was to make our trip as memorable as possible. They over-delivered. The Property. We were immediately blown away by how beautiful the Matild is. Not overly large, but a perfect combination of old-world grandeur and a bright, playful personality that feels entirely its own. The Location. Absolutely perfect. Our room had Danube views, and the hotel sits in the heart of everything — Parliament (~1 mile), the Chain Bridge and Buda (~0.4 miles), and the Jewish Quarter (~0.5 miles) are all an easy walk. The Duchess. Don’t skip it. The cocktail bar at the Matild is worth a visit even if you’re not a guest. Beautifully designed, excellent drinks, and the perfect way to end an evening in Budapest. The Matild Palace has set a new standard for us. We will be back."

"Spotless experience. Let me start from the first step. The location is fantastic. Walking distance to the Duna river is 200 m. and close to any kind of transportation you wish to use. Beautiful historic building, Elegant service with excellent staff, starting from GM Mr Serkan to Mr Mattia at Spago Restaurant. Rooms are spacious and gives you space with the details curated to our needs. Excellent"

"The Matild Palace was possibly the best hotel we’ve ever stayed in. Clean, bright, easy, and fun, with an attentive staff who really made us feel at home in this new and foreign city. We definitely will stay there again, and the rooftop bar “The Dutchess” was a surprise bonus with more attentive staff on hand to serve drinks and actually engage with us a little! They were great! Okay, so I have to mention my gripes too, but these are minor issues, but worth mentioning. - Pillows. We like them fuller. Ours were too thin and soft. We’re not fans of feather pillows that “deflate.” I’m sure we could have asked for foam pillows, but regretfully, we did not. - Night lights in the bathroom are awesome, but these were very bright. Too bright. I actually travel with a red nightlight for bathrooms and they even had a 120v plug in for mine. Otherwise a phenomenal experience! Oh, and the place smells incredible too!!"

"Stayed here for what was supposed to the first night of our AmaWaterways river cruise. I was disappointed to lose a day on the ship but WOW this hotel was deluxe. My husband is platinum with Marriott so we're used to upgrades, but even the standard room here is a delight. I have never been wowed by a bathroom the way I was wowed by this bathroom. The heated floors (especially in the winter), the stunning teal tiles, the huge standing tub, it really made for a wonderful extra night on land. The dinner in the event room and breakfast at Spago were also a lovely treat. But what was really remarkable is that my husband forgot his jacket in the room when we boarded our busses for the next stop. For a week, he had no jacket. On a whim, we wandered back to the Matild when we returned to Budapest. And wouldn't you know, we walked in, they remembered him, and told him they had his jacket! As a TA, this is the kind of service I am looking for. I'll definitely be making the Matild the hotel that I use for my clients going to Budapest."
