PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Váci utca and the Danube embankment, where Budapest's inner city reaches its most theatrical pitch, a 1901 eclectic-baroque palace designed by Győző Czigler for Archduchess Maria Clotilde of Austria has been restored into Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, after more than a century of institutional and administrative use. The building's crown — an elaborate ornamented tower rising above a limestone facade encrusted with sculpted cartouches, wrought ironwork, and gilded finials — was always the most recognizable silhouette on this stretch of the Pest embankment, and the restoration led by Bánáti + Hartvig has returned it to something close to its original ambition. Inside, the Hungarian studio Artus Studio managed the interiors across 130 rooms and suites, threading a contemporary sensibility through the historic envelope without flattening either. The standard rooms carry dark-stained timber desks in macassar ebony, teal velvet accent chairs, and patterned wool carpets in warm stone tones, while the rooftop mansard suites trade carved plasterwork for raked glazing and Iznik-patterned kilim runners against blonde oak floors. The ground-floor restaurant terrace, enclosed beneath a bronze-framed retractable glass canopy, brings olives and ficus trees into a room that manages to feel simultaneously urban and sheltered. From the rooftop bar, gilded domes and baroque spires crowd the horizon in every direction — the city performing its own grandeur just above eye level.

"we are staying here in this wonderful, breathtaking hotel. We came to Budapest from London to visit our breathtaking Budapest and we booked this lovely hotel near the old centre of Budapest . The check-in was very easy and the staff was very helpful and kind. We stayed in one of the loft rooms and the room was very cosy and very stylish . Overall worth staying here and we can recommend this hotel absolutely to other future guests. A massive thank to Lilly, István, Daniel and Zsigmond, they are amazing, absolutely the best team."

"Wow, what an beautiful hotel and amazing staff! The decor is very elegant and beautiful, yet still comfortable and warm. We were in 2 junior suites on third floor with balconies and spectacular view of the Elizabeth bridge. The staff was friendly and polite and huge shout out to the Concierge Daniel who went out of his way to assist us with a phone call. Location is great! Spago resteraunt was wonderful and we really enjoyed the mother's day brunch. Robbie the bartender (I think was his name)was so helpful and made great cocktails. They even had a lovely gift for all the ladies. We also enjoyed the rooftop Duchess bar. I wish I remembered more names to recognize the staff as they were all phenominal! Oh, and be sure to enjoy a massage at the spa....one of the best we ever had! Thank you Matild Palace for an amazing stay!"

"What a truly exquisite and memorable hotel. Don't stay at Parisi, Matild is much nicer. Staff were so nice and friendly, the lobby is very elegant, the location is great with views of one bridge (not the chain bridge), and Spago is a very nice restaurant, especially the breakfast. The gym is not huge but spotless with great equipment. You can walk all around the City and feel safe. There is a nice roof top bar as well."

"My son had stayed at this hotel a while back and raved about it so I had to stay here when we visited Budapest. So glad. I had put in my suite night upgrades for being a Marriott Platinum member but my request was turned down. So I called Jorge the day before our arrival and he said that particular room wasn't available but he had the junior suite with tons of windows and a gorgeous view of the Elizabeth Bridge. He ended up just upgrading us and not even using my awards. So sweet and so much appreciated, especially because we were coming from the states and were spending more time than usual in room because of jet lag. Checked in with Sophia who helped us find a restaurant and make some reservations. She recommended Monk's Bistro across the street for a last minute late night dinner. It was just ok and expensive. The next am we spoke with Daniel the concierge who helped us get dinner reservations, reservations for a night cruise on the Danube and tell us what to see in this beautiful city. He also got an uber for us to take us to dinner. The next day Ziggy, other concierge helped us with a few things as well. Everyone that worked at the hotel was fantastic-housekeeping, front desk (had an issue with train ticket to vienna and they helped me tremendously), concierge, bartender, wait staff and manager at Spago for breakfast and dinner, front door guys-just about everyone we met and dealt with was fantastic. We travel all around the world and stay in some top notch places and I can always seem to find 1 thing that's a negative. Matilde Palace has none. It's perfect. The hotel reached out and I gave a rave review so heard back from the manager. Nice touch. I'm sure he's the reason the hotel is so special. We had thought about the Four Seasons or the St. Regis when booking but after seeing those, we made the right choice. The Four Seasons was too fancy, uppity. Matilde Palace is a small boutique hotel that feels like home surrounded by family."

"Such a beautiful hotel! Pure luxury to stay here. This stay was booked as pre cruise for our Viking cruise. Lovely room, huge bathroom. Great view of the city from our room and the roof top patio. Perfect location to walk to all the sites in Budapest."
