PB hotel design editorial

Drechsler Palace sat empty on Andrássy Avenue for the better part of two decades, its French Renaissance facade and Ödön Lechner-designed ornament quietly deteriorating while Budapest transformed around it. The building's resurrection as W Budapest in 2023 is one of the more improbable acts of adaptive reuse in recent Central European hospitality — a UNESCO World Heritage address, completed in 1886 by Lechner and Gyula Pártos, handed to London studio Bowler James Brindley to fill with saturated color and maximalist energy. Working alongside Budapest firm Bánáti + Hartvig, who managed the restoration architecture, they chose not to whisper around the historic shell but to argue with it productively. The 151 guestrooms deploy teal lacquer, brass perforated headboard panels, geometric rugs in copper and blue, and curved coral sofas in combinations that somehow find equilibrium with the original plasterwork cornices and tall arched windows. The deeper you go into the building, the more interesting the collision becomes. The restaurant layers channeled navy banquettes, blue ceramic urn lamps, and gold-domed pendant lights against checkerboard floors and mirror-tiled ceilings that multiply the whole composition into infinity. But the most arresting space is below grade, where the spa pool sits beneath a vaulted masonry ceiling of fan-arched ribs — warm terracotta plaster meeting gold column trim and a cool blue-tiled basin. Whatever Lechner imagined for this building in 1886, it probably wasn't this. It's better for it.

"Right from the moment we arrived, we were met with such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. As soon as we pulled up, the bellman greeted us, helped with our luggage, and guided us through a beautifully illuminated hallway that instantly created a sense of calm and tranquility. It truly made us feel special from the very start. At reception, we were welcomed with smiles and conversation from Aaron and the manager, Sophie. We had booked two rooms and realized we hadn’t actually included breakfast, but they were incredibly accommodating and quickly helped resolve that. There were even some jokes about staying warm on our upcoming boat cruise, and within a minute, Sophie had drinks brought out for us, with prosecco and juices, which was such a thoughtful touch. Irina then gave us a tour and explained everything about the spa and hotel amenities in Russian. The layout is extremely convenient, you can go directly from your floor down to the spa, and there’s always someone available to assist you or even help plan activities around Budapest. Everything in the room is also very modern and easy to use, with controls for service, lighting, and temperature all just a tap away. That evening, we tried the hotel’s Beefbar, and it completely exceeded expectations. The selection of premium meats was impressive, but as someone who doesn’t usually really like steak, I chose the bao buns, and they were incredible. Irina recommended the cheesecake, and our waitress Alexandra suggested the chocolate dessert, so we tried both. They were equally rich, delicate, and absolutely delicious. Later that night, I had asked about getting a diffuser for my hair, and Sophie went out of her way at 10:30 PM to contact the stylist team to see if one was available. Unfortunately, they didn’t have one, but the effort alone meant so much. The next morning at breakfast, Olivia, the director, personally came up to us to check in and make sure everything, from the food to our room, was to our liking. That level of attentiveness was something we had never experienced before and was such a pleasant surprise. The breakfast itself was fantastic, offering both buffet-style options and à la carte dishes from eggs and açaí bowls to stir-fries. The staff continued to impress us throughout our stay. The gentleman who brought our luggage to the room was extremely kind and took the time to explain everything, carefully placing our bags and making sure we were settled. We were also welcomed with a lovely chocolate mousse-style cake in the room. In the evenings, around 6:30, staff would come by to check if we needed more water or fresh towels, which was such a thoughtful detail. The housekeeping team was excellent as well: they even organized our wires so they weren’t scattered around and made sure everything was fully restocked. Sophie really went out of her way to ensure we had the best experience. The spa itself is beautiful, featuring the same stunning illuminated archways as the entrance. Tommy kindly gave us a tour, showing us the 24/7 gym, steam room, sauna, pool, and private locker areas for changing and storing belongings. Every detail, from the service to the amenities, was handled with care, and the entire experience felt both luxurious and personal."

""I stayed at the W hotel for a weekend and was truly amazed by the design, the atmosphere around the reception and lounge area, and the room itself. It is a charming and unique hotel that perfectly combines modern design with the traditional architecture of the historic palace. Our room was on the third floor; it was spacious with the high ceilings added to the feeling of space. The beds were very comfortable, having two pillows of different softness. The bathroom was nicely decorated and well-equipped, though a little small. There is a nice spa area on the -1 level with a pool and saunas, better suited for relaxing than swimming, but we enjoyed spending time there before dinner. The location is perfect—directly opposite the Opera on the beautiful Andrássy Avenue. I truly had a wonderful time."

"We stayed at the W for our wedding anniversary/spring break, for 5 nights. I could go on and on about everything but I’ll try to be concise. (The welcome anniversary treat was lovely - bubbles and mousse cake? Delightful!) First off, location. Across the street from the Opera. Train station right at the doorstep. Walking distance to restaurants, the Jewish Quarter, shopping, great food and bars…whatever you might want or need in Budapest. The hotel is so beautifully decorated: it’s like a mix of mid century and Art Deco - so, a dream! We were upgraded to a suite and it was the perfect room, honestly. Possibly the best pillows of any Marriott property in the world we have stayed at. Housekeeping impeccable - the turndown service makes your room perfect for sleep. Food was delicious and fresh. Drinks were on point - every drink was well made! We went to the spa for massages our last day and Mia and Marc are fantastic- my husband rarely falls asleep during massages but he was so relaxed he did! Both of them are so attentive and clearly know how to apply pressure in a way that fits your comfort but you still get your money’s worth. Gosh we are still swooning over our stay. It was heavenly!"

"The hotel was amazing. Full of character, large and very comfy rooms, nice touches (mixed cocktails in bottles in the room etc) and staff who were very friendly!! Nothing too much trouble and they remembered guests and their preferences from day to day. Overall, one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in for business (and that’s a lot of hotels…)"
