PB hotel design editorial

Hilton's Canopy brand made its Nordic debut on Sæbraut, steps from the old harbour where Reykjavík's fishing trawlers once docked, in a purpose-built structure clad in dark standing-seam metal panels that sit in pointed conversation with the painted corrugated-iron vernacular of the surrounding city. Canopy by Hilton Reykjavík City Centre opened in 2017 across 112 rooms arranged over seven floors, its facade geometry sharp and contemporary against a neighbourhood where the adjacent building — visible in the exterior image — carries hand-painted geometric murals that echo traditional Icelandic craft motifs. Inside, the double-height lobby works exposed concrete columns, wide-plank oak flooring, and warm timber wall cladding into a register that feels closer to a well-appointed longhouse than a chain hotel common area. Blue velvet armchairs on wire-frame legs cluster around round walnut tables with teardrop pendant lamps between them, while a mezzanine staircase with industrial steel balustrades rises past a collage artwork overhead. The bar and restaurant continue the material conversation — patterned encaustic cement tiles underfoot, a back-lit oak bar front, smoked-glass globe pendants alongside hammered brass shades, white subway tile framing the kitchen pass. Guest rooms carry the palette upward: pale ash floors, geometric dhurrie rugs in charcoal and grey, oak desk-and-shelving units, and a distinctive teal-painted slatted headboard canopy that gives the brand its name its most literal architectural expression.

"Great place to stay in RJK. It was our first time to Iceland and the staff at the canopy were very welcoming. We were able to get an early check in which was much appreciated after a long overnight flight. The vibe is fun, funky and comfortable. The rooms are small which is typical for the area and the space felt inviting and homey. Very close to everything including rainbow road. A good place to stay !"

"Be very careful booking this hotel many rooms are opposite a very loud nightclub guaranteeing no sleep until early hours …bring ear defenders . On complaint receptionist offered a shrug ."

"This was a great hotel. Location was excellent, good breakfast and the room was modern, spacious and clean. Easy parking jn the carpark across the road. A few small issues: 1 - hot water wasn’t working in our room for about an hour 6am / 7am and maintenance not in until 8am. Not the country for a cold or even lukewarm shower! 2 - no shower cap available on request (a small but surprising thing not to have available.) 3 - the bath and body products provided in the room were high quality but “charcoal” scented, which was a very strong smell. 4 - breakfast not open until 7am which is a bit late if you want to hit the road early to beat the tour buses. Suggest a 6.30am start would be better."

"Fabulous hotel in a fantastic location. Spacious and clean rooms. Really nice and relaxing communal areas. Breakfast was a highlight. Fresh and good quality products. All staff friendly and helpful but two stood out for us - Patryk on breakfast service and Julio on reception. Both so helpful, nothing was too much trouble and everything done in a quick, courteous way with a smile. Two small negatives but didn’t spoil our stay - Beds a bit too firm for me and rooms very hot as no air conditioning and only small window."
