PB hotel design editorial

Hilton's Canopy brand made its Nordic debut on Sæbraut, steps from the old harbour where Reykjavík's fishing trawlers once docked, in a purpose-built structure clad in dark standing-seam metal panels that sit in pointed conversation with the painted corrugated-iron vernacular of the surrounding city. Canopy by Hilton Reykjavík City Centre opened in 2017 across 112 rooms arranged over seven floors, its facade geometry sharp and contemporary against a neighbourhood where the adjacent building — visible in the exterior image — carries hand-painted geometric murals that echo traditional Icelandic craft motifs. Inside, the double-height lobby works exposed concrete columns, wide-plank oak flooring, and warm timber wall cladding into a register that feels closer to a well-appointed longhouse than a chain hotel common area. Blue velvet armchairs on wire-frame legs cluster around round walnut tables with teardrop pendant lamps between them, while a mezzanine staircase with industrial steel balustrades rises past a collage artwork overhead. The bar and restaurant continue the material conversation — patterned encaustic cement tiles underfoot, a back-lit oak bar front, smoked-glass globe pendants alongside hammered brass shades, white subway tile framing the kitchen pass. Guest rooms carry the palette upward: pale ash floors, geometric dhurrie rugs in charcoal and grey, oak desk-and-shelving units, and a distinctive teal-painted slatted headboard canopy that gives the brand its name its most literal architectural expression.

"We had a wonderful stay at the Canopy by Hilton Reykjavík City Centre. The location is excellent—within easy walking distance of Rainbow Street, restaurants, shops, and many of Reykjavík’s attractions. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the hotel has a stylish, modern Icelandic feel. A special thank you to Julio and Jani, who sent messages during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed and that our stay was going well. Such a thoughtful and personal touch! The staff was welcoming and helpful throughout our visit. We would definitely recommend this hotel when staying in Reykjavík!"

"This hotel is conveniently located in the center of action. It is within walking distance to restaurants and shops. The rainbow street is just a few blocks away. The room was nice and comfortable, but the blanket was too warm."

"This was our second visit to Canopy by Hilton. We entered there first in Nov 2024. Our booking was for 7th of Aug. Before that we went to the hotel on 30th July to ask if they could store 2 bags till we came because we were going on a cruise and carrying 4 bags was a waste of energy. We chatted with the central customer service and they said all Hilton hotels will store your bags before check in even if it is for more than a week as long as u have a confirmed booking. We had already prepaid the full booking amount. But when I went to inquire at Canopy by Hilton in the evening of 29th or 30th the lady at the reception was shockingly rude. She said that we do not store bags and shooed me off. Just because I was brown and not white. The same behaviour was faced on check in. The couple in front of us in the check in line was give 2 bottles of mineral water even without asking. This was because they were white skinned people from the USA. When it was our turn we were not given any water bottles. When my wife pointed out that all Hiltons give bottled water in their rooms, then she reluctantly gave us w bottles, with a scorned look. Just because we were brown skinned? This discrimination we have never faced before in Iceland and that too on two different occasions by 2 different persons, but at the same hotel. It will be good if the management gives proper training before actually starting their jobs. Also the management should have a Zero Tolerance Policy towards such discrimination. The hotel otherwise is very good in location, right inside the central area. The rooms are good and comfortable. They do not give any bathroom amenities. For any dental kit, shaving kit, comb etc you have to beg the receptionist. And if u find a racist receptionist, she will say go to the next door shop. That's Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik for you in 2026."
