PB hotel design editorial

At the curved corner where Hafnarstraeti meets Reykjavik's old harbour quarter, a white-rendered neoclassical building from the early twentieth century anchors the Reykjavik Konsulat Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton, with a civic self-assurance that predates the tourism boom by several decades. The rounded corner bay, deep cornice lines, and tall divided-light windows give the facade the bearing of a commercial institution rather than a purpose-built hotel — which is precisely the point, since the building served as a trading house before its conversion, its history woven into the property's identity as a place rooted in Reykjavik's mercantile past. Inside, the design navigates between that historical weight and a warmer mid-century register without forcing the contrast. The lobby bar brings together deep-buttoned Chesterfield sofas in dusty pink and forest green, cognac leather lounge chairs with oak frames recalling the lineage of Scandinavian furniture design, herringbone parquet floors, and sputnik-style brass pendant lights that warm the panelled grey walls. Guest rooms follow a palette of tobacco-toned grasscloth wallcovering, tufted upholstered headboards, and accents of burnt orange — a wool throw, scatter cushions — that feel more like a considered residential edit than a branded rollout. Most distinctively, the restaurant exposes an entire wall of raw Icelandic basalt, dark and textured against walnut joinery and mustard banquette seating, grounding the whole interior in the geology of the island itself.

Reykjavik Konsulat Hotel, Curio Collection By Hilton Reviews

"We spent 3 nights at the Konsulat whilst visiting Reykjavik and were very pleased with our choice as it ticked so many of the boxes that we look for in a hotel – small boutique style with excellent facilities, super staff and a great central location. The suite we stayed in was a good size, well equipped and quiet. Breakfast was excellent with a good selection of food, and although there is a only limited bar menu for lunch/evening, we found it more than sufficient for the our first night and loved the bar’s relaxed atmosphere/décor/service. We would certainly use again if we ever returned to Reykjavik."

"We had a fantastic four-night stay and it truly exceeded our expectations. The room was cosy, warm, and beautifully decorated with a huge en-suite and walk in shower. Breakfast was amazing, with plenty of choice each morning. The staff member at breakfast was incredibly helpful and attentive – she couldn’t do enough for us and really made a difference to our stay. The same goes for the staff at the front desk, who were so helpful when it came to any questions we had. The location is perfect for exploring Reykjavík. Everything felt within a five-minute walk, whether it was bus stops for excursions or the harbour. Being right next to the famous hot dog stand was a great bonus too! Having access to the hot tub and sauna on the ground floor was a real treat. We used them almost every day, and they were practically empty each time – such a relaxing experience. The only small suggestion we would make would be to have the fire lit more often in the lobby. It wasn’t on during our stay, and it would have been a lovely touch to come back to after a day out exploring. It certainly wouldn’t stop us returning, but it would make an already cosy atmosphere even better! All in all, we couldn’t have asked for more and will definitely return when we come back to Iceland!"

"Beautiful hotel in a former department store. Nicely restored with many photos of the former business. Fairly quiet. Staff was welcoming and had lots of nice suggestions for restaurants and getting around. My room was a cozy top floor room. Try the hot dog stand behind the hotel."

"Loved this hotel. Very comfortable and great location. Staff was friendly and helpful. Stayed at another hotel in Reykjavík with a tour group. The Konsulat was by far superior in all aspects. Plus I want to fly there every day to use the shower!!! Awesome!"
